Sum ’17 Week 4 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+3) DYN
3-0 NY DYNASTY has two former MVPs on the roster in (F) Will Haile and (F) Mike Reding, so firepower they have. But they have scraped by in games vs the Top 5 (CRV doesn’t count). But better to scrape by with wins than losses. Haile is putting up stupid numbers right now.
(=) 808 4-1 Upstarts 808s & FASTBREAKS haven’t lost any momentum, losing only narrowly to DYN in Week 3. Rookie (G) Aaron Smith continues to be electric while posting MVP-worthy #s. 808s new pieces have fit in well and they’re starting to look like a real contender now.
(=) AXA
3-2 Old and slow, AXA-RODD seems to find a way to win, except when they find ways to lose. Every game has come down to the wire, but they can’t say they haven’t controlled their own fate. AXA is the kind of team that can win any game and also lose any game at any time.
(+1) HON
3-1 Flying in under the radar as usual are the HONEY BADGERS. They’re the grit & grind team of D1, which doesn’t produce intimidating #s, but always works well in the playoffs. Don’t sleep on the Badgers.
(-4) CRV
1-3 Player availability hasn’t helped the CRAFTY VETS so far this season, but that’s something they knew going in. At full strength, they’re still the best team in D1. If CRV can just make the playoffs and get key players playoff eligible, they will be the team to beat.
(+2) UNN
1-2 UNITED NATIONS has looked a bit uneven this season, but a win vs a short-handed CRV and a strong outing in a loss to 808 seems to indicate that they may be back on track. With no player scoring more than 11.3 ppg, they may need some help offensively to really make a move.
(-1) SED
1-3 They’ve lost no game by more than 6 points, so SHUT ‘EM DOWN has had a chance to win in every game they’ve played. Closing out has been an issue. But if they can figure that out, they have plenty of pieces to here to make a strong playoff push in the back nine.
(-1) YOL
0-4 YOLO is in a similar situation to SED, they’ve been right there in most games. They’re not out of it yet, but next week’s game vs UNN is a must-win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) DPY
3-0 Last season’s defending champs haven’t lost yet, so DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF will hold serve at #1. (G) Emery Clark and (F) Tyler McFarlane have carried the load offensively. (G) Kali Pearson hasn’t shot well so far, but he is racking up the hustle stats.
(=) NGC
3-0 Last season’s finalists, NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE, hasn’t missed a beat either and they looked focused on reclaiming their title. (F) Mark Lee‘s resurgence on offense has been the story so far, but (G) David Chu has been as steady as ever.
(+4) GMM
2-1 Veteran (G) Tommy Wong seems to have found the stroke again, which is great news for GUARD ME MAYBE who needs his range to open up the paint for GMM’s plethora of forwards. With some new key faces on the roster GMM might be poised for a return trip to the chip.
(+4) SKL
2-2 SKILLSHARE started with a narrow loss to DPY, then a close one to GMM. Since then, they’ve been thumping opponents, and (F) Russ Braithwaite has been a major key. With SKL struggling to convert from the 3FG, the more they can score inside the line, the better.
(+1)
MLG
2-2 Newbies MLGB have shown promise at 2-2. But they could just as easily have been 3-1 as 1-3. Surely they’ll take it. Last night’s 3-pointer to beat JAM at the buzzer may be the turning point. They play games close and so far have given themselves a chance to win every night.
(-3) HAR
1-2 TEAM HARDWOOD is still right the thick of things. A win over PRE is promising despite the loss to SKL. They’ll face a tough stretch ahead with DPY and GMM on the schedule, but if they can steal a win there, they can finish strong in the back 2 games of the season to lock up a playoff spot.
(-3) PRE
1-2 They’ve been a fun team to watch, but PREMATURE SHOOTERS may be on the verge of flipping the switch. Chalk up early losses to a new team figuring it out, this roster has the personnel to challenge for 4/5 seed.
(-3) JAM
1-3 SPACE JAM dropped a heart-breaker to MLG last night. More than the fact that they had it in the bag, they needed that win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Next week’s game vs PRE is a must-win. Then comes their toughest part of the season, GMM, then NGC. Tough road ahead.
(=) ROT 0-3 Truth is, DA ROTI PROJECT isn’t out of it yet. They basically have to win all but the NGC game to give themselves a chance. But they’ll have to check that first franchise win off the to-do list first.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1)
NET
4-0 NASTY NETS (F) Matt Silberman is playing MVP ball right now. His 22.3 ppg is 2nd in D3, and his 9 rpg and 2.5 spg shows his impact on defense as well. But the player that puts them above the rest is floor leader (G) Dan Gogerty, an MVP candidate in his own right.
(+5)
COB
2-0 As expected (G) Tony Cuadrado has been a monster for COBRA KAI, particularly on the defensive end. The 16.5 spg so far is stupid. And partial thanks for that goes to the low-key return of (G) Steven Chen, who has always been a defensive force.
(=) FNL
3-1 The win over AIR is nice, but they were blown out by the only team they played against in the top half (COB), so despite the surprising 3-1 record, the jury is still out on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTZ.
(=) SPR
2-1 SPAGHETTI RAMEN will always be right there. Don’t sleep because of all the new faces out here. Until they’re actually eliminated, they’re the team you put your money on. (G) Leuis Ng with another MVP caliber season. Business as usual here.
(=) NGC 1-1 The veteran NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is the dark horse, wild card, whatever you want to call it. They have the most dominant big man in D3 with (C) Victor Chia. And solid vets all around him.
(=) DYN 2-1 It’s crazy that NY DYNASTY is at #6 after back-to-back title games, a testament to how good D3 is this season. Partly due to a revolving door of PGs, which makes a difference in identity for DYN, but like SPR, sleep at your own risk. There’s no scorer in D3 like (G) David Chu.
(-6) AIR
2-1 The early blowout wins were nice, but the loss to FNL revealed that maybe the AIRBALLERS needed re-ranking. Still, (F) Albert Hei is having a great season, and they have the most mobile perimeter D outside of COB. They can move back up if they use it.
(=)
SNB
1-2 SMASH N BOUNCE is still a playoff team with their propensity for defense and (F) Nathan Kan‘s offense can give them a chance to upset someone in the first round. If they can advance beyond that is unclear.
(+1)
MON
0-3 The MONSTARS are still in the playoff hunt, and they will now enter the most vital part of their schedule, facing HAN, MYP, CMU, all teams that are vying for the 9th and last playoff spot. If they win these games, they will be in the driver’s seat for a post-season bid.
10 (-1) HAN
1-3 By getting a crucial win, HANDEL ARCHITECTS are still alive and well in the playoff hunt. If they can win 2 out of their last 3, they can give themselves a chance. Win out, and they’re guaranteed a bid.
11 (=) MYP 1-3 MYPC is in a similar position to HAN, but they’re down a loss to HAN. Like all teams in the bottom 4, they need more scoring. If they can pull out wins over MON and SNB, they have a shot at breaking into that 8-9 seed, or at least sending it to a tie-breaker.
12 (=) CMU 0-3 CMU BALLERS are in a tough spot, but not mathematically out of yet. Beat SNB, HAN, and MON, and they can still make it. But of all the teams that need a boost on offense, this is the one that needs it most.

TDL Winter 2017 Championship Preview (D1 Sun)

(1) YUNG NO FLY ZONE vs (6) SHAWN KEMP’S KIDS

D1 Sun Championship – Sunday, April 9, 2:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
For whatever reason, YUNG NO FLY ZONE has always struggled to defend SKK, but they have still tended to win. This wasn’t NFZ’s most impressive season in terms of dominant wins, but they are more balanced than ever before both on offense and D, and here they are back in the title game to redeem themselves for last season’s narrow loss to DOR.
NFZ
7-1

61-55

SKK
5-4
SHAWN KEMP’S KIDS barely got into the playoffs, but they’ve been red hot since then. With four players scoring in double-digits, they’ve been getting balanced scoring, and they’re shooting well from the 3. Which is a weapon they have used well vs NFZ in the past. If they’re shooting well again in this game, they have more than a real chance of pulling off this upset.
Key Player: Michael Reding

For a multi-time D1 MVP, this has not been Reding’s sharpest season offensively, but he has taken on a bigger role as NFZ’s most versatile defender. He will probably defend 1-5  today.

Key Player: Dan Linnane

Linnane has always been a streaky player for SKK, but this has been his most consistent season as far as just flat out attendance goes. And he has been red hot in the playoffs with a versatile offensive attack.

X-Factor: Phil Thomas

Like Reding, Thomas is a versatile defender, but he’s a better option on offense for NFZ. He may be the one player that SKK has no real match-up for.

The diminutive Walsh has always been NFZ’s kryptonite. He can rise up over NFZ’s smaller defenders on the jumper, and finish tough shots in the paint with NFZ’s limited size.

TDL Winter 2017 Championship Preview (D1, D2 WN)

(3) JUNKIES vs (5) NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE

D2 WN Championship – Wednesday, March 29, 7pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Last night, THE JUNKIES showed why when playing at their best, they are unbeatable at this level. The newbie franchise just dismantled a veteran DYN team that had no answer for (G) Eugene Kravitz or (F) Mark Promax or (F) Danny Kennelly on D. It was a massacre. If they bring that hot shooting into tonight’s game, the chip is theirs to lose. Or rather, to win.
JUN
7-2

61-59

NGC
5-4
This is not unfamiliar territory for NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE. If they just get into the playoffs, they always have a chance at running the table. They’ve been around long enough to know how to win close games (despite almost giving up the win last night to poor FT shooting). Still, Gritty has the physicality and size to match-up with JUN. If they can get stops, they can win this.
Key Player: Eugene Kravits

He’ll be the quickest player on the floor, which means he can create his own shot as much as he can for others. And if the jumper is falling like it was last night, NGC won’t have an answer for him.

Key Player: Ace Watana.

The NGC offense runs through their veteran PG, Watanasuparp, and he’ll likely have to guard Kravits as well. All he has to do is contain Kravits, and manage the game on the other end. If the shot is falling, bonus.

X-Factor: Mark Promax

Promax was more aggressive in last night’s win than he was all season. And a big reason for that is DYN allowing him to get out in transition where is tough to stop. If NGC doesn’t take care of the ball, Promax can put up big #s again.

X-Factor: David Chu

Chu is always capable of heating up in any game, but he’s nursing a strained back. If NGC can get him some open looks early on, he can change the tenor of the game with his range. NGC has alot of guards who can create mismatches.

(1) NYK SPARTANS vs (2) HONEY BADGERS

D1 WN Championship – Wednesday, March 29, 8pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Tthe NYK SPARTANS have been the most dominant team in D1 all season, with a formidable front-court and solid veteran guard play. Their one weakness might be perimeter shooting. They don’t have one true gunner to help spread the court. So far, D1 scoring champ (F) Young Song hasn’t really needed it. But with HON’s pressure D out on the perimeter, guard play may be the key to this game.
SPA
7-1

56-53

HON
7-1
They don’t alway look the part, but the HONEY BADGERS have been right here all season. The Badgers live up to their name every single night they play. Sheer grit and determination in a win last night vs ASN got them into chip. Their ability to make every game ugly gives them a chance to win it in crunch time. It’s a 50/50 scenario when both teams are exhausted and the game is close. They’ll take those odds.
Key Player: Young Song

If you leave him free, he’ll torch you for 30. But pay too much attention to him and his teammates will pick up the scoring. It’s basically pick your poison, but if we’re being 💯, Song is a much, much, much more lethal poison.

Key Player: Sherwin Salar

HON (F) Zach Moretti is just as key as Salar in the same way here, both defend much bigger players, both play with twice the heart. And if they can get some 3FGs to drop from their back court, they can make an even bigger impact on offense.

X-Factor: Chris Youn

Youn is the point forward, and other than Song, the most consistent of SPA’s lineup. The x-factor here is whether he’s hitting his 3FG. They don’t have a true shooter, but when Youn is hitting, it’s a huge asset.

Wong is on this team to make 3FGs. It just hasn’t happened consistently this season. But thus is thrill of a single-elim game. If he can get hot for just one night, he can do a lot for the Badgers’ cause.
