TDL Fall 2016 Week 7 Power Rankings (D1, D2, D3 WN)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

DYN
3-2 It’s been an interesting season in that no team–including the no. 1 NY DYNASTY–has stood out as the outright favorite to win it all. But two of this team’s three wins come against the rest of the Top 3. Despite the two losses, DYN appears to be the team to beat.
(=) HON 3-1 The HONEY BADGERS bring their trademark defensive effort back to weeknights and they are once again contenders to win it all. Veteran (C) Rich Chang has been a solid addition to fill up the paint, he seems to fit right into what the Badgers do best.
(+1) PWC 3-2 When PWC IIII makes their 3FGs, they’re tough. (G) Dain Scheibel & (F) Matt Modrick have been All-TDL First Team caliber players this season, they’ve consistently given PWC a chance to win every night. Also not to be overlooked is (F) James Reingruber‘s infectious hustle.
(-1) 70S 2-2 THAT 70S TEAM is loaded with talent and now they’re finally looking like they know how to use it, going 2-1 in their last 3, just barely losing to PWC on Oct 19. (C) Martin Brusewitz has been quietly dominant and (G) Shaun Crummy will finish as D1’s most versatile guard.
(-1) ABN 2-3 Packed with hustle players, the AQUA BEST NINJAS have a top of the line scorer in (F) Jason Wu, by far the league’s biggest player in (C) Rigo Sargeant and now a backcourt that has seen it all before. Luckily for them, all teams make playoffs, where they should thrive.
(=) TOP 1-4 The TOP STARS are the only team to beat a fully loaded DYN so far this season. Which says a lot about their ceiling. Rookie (C) Quinn Hood has been a force right away, complementing TOP’s regulars well. And (F) Mike Song‘s physical style also seems to fit right in.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

(+5)
NYE
4-1 Since adding (F) Jarrett McCrea, the JUSTICE LEAGUE hasn’t just won 4 straight, they’ve won by an average margin of 23.5 ppg. Which means they will likely move up into the D1 playoffs should this level of dominance continue. JLA is red hot right now.
(=) NGC 3-0 This is a veteran team with all the right pieces in place. NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is undefeated right now and haven’t even really woken up offensively. They’re pacing themselves for the playoffs, expect this team to go late into the post-season and contend for the title.
(=) DYN 3-1 NY DYNASTY are a guard-heavy team, but they’ve finally found the right front-court to fit their style of play. (F) Danny Lung is a defensive-minded, mobile big and (F) Tim Chin is a heady, knockdown shooter, both perfectly complement (G) Will Moy and (G) Josh Fan.
(-3) GMM 2-2 When (G) Tommy Wong is shooting well, GUARD ME MAYBE always has a chance. But they can’t rely solely on that. GMM hasn’t had much depth in the front-court–they’re strength is their guard-play. But if they can get (F) Brian Law to more games, they may turn this around yet.
(-1) PRB 1-3 The PRETTY BOYS haven’t looked themselves lately. This is a team built around (G) David Chu‘s scoring, but despite a very solid 23.3 ppg, he hasn’t been at his best. They need to bring in another scorer and if he is a permanent add, (F) Chris Di is a good choice to do that.
(+1) DPY 1-4 DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF picked up their first win and a big part of that is thanks to mid-season addition (G) Terence Stroude. This is a new team that still has a long way to go to build the chemistry needed to win consistently in this league, but this is a good step forward.
(-1) NYE 1-4 They took a disappointing loss to DPY in Week 6, but TEAM NYCE has more than enough talent on the team to turn this around. Luckily, all teams will make playoffs so if they can get momentum going into the post season, an upset may be on the horizon.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SKL
4-1 SKILLSHARE took their first loss in a bit of a deflating kind of game. (F) Scott Sullivan went out early to a sore back and (C) Anthony Hull was late to the game. For as good as this team is, they are better than the sum of their parts. They need everyone there and healthy to win it all.
(=) 30F 5-1 This might be the surprise team of the season so far, but there’s always a couple in D3. 30-FOR-30 is largely unpolished but they are young and make up for mistakes by playing with a ton of energy. They also have (F) Adam Wang and (C) Ezekial Kim, likely All-TDL 1st Team players.
(=) RIS 2-2 They haven’t been invincible this season, but JUST RISE is essentially the same Spaghetti Ramen team with no (F) Mark Hahn. Now, that’s a big hole to fill, and they won’t be able to, but they got a big win over SKL last week that means it’s getting close to playoff time.
(+1) UBC 3-2 As long as they have (G) David Weiss on the floor, UNCLE BOUGHT A COW has a chance. This team is also young, with key players new to the league, but like 3oF, they play with great energy.
(+2) DYN 2-4 NY DYNASTY has had a number of low-post options fill in, but they couldn’t get any of them playoff eligible, which will hurt in the playoffs. But their backcourt of (G) Steve Shin and (G) Ren Hsieh will be one of the tougher ones to defend come playoff time.
(-2) LEG 1-4 The truth is, LEGO‘s assembled talent is better than their record, but for whatever reason, they have not been winning games. Continuity from the roster for each game is definitely a big part of it. If they can get hot going into the playoffs, this team is good enough for a deep run.
(-1) NYK 1-4 The NYCAC KINGS showed up big in their win last week over UBC. They needed that one to build some momentum going into the playoffs. Every team makes it so they’ll have a chance to pull of an upset. Rookie (G) Kavin Zhao has been a force all season.

1ST DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
NFZ
3-0 Yung No Fly Zone is no stranger to this spot. When this incarnation of the team came together, they immediately won a championship. But the 4 seasons afterward have been met with disappointment despite some dominant regular seasons. But here they are again with a strong start.
(N/A) SKW 1-1 The two-time defending champs don’t need a great reg season to get it going in the playoffs. Make no mistake, SK War Dog is still the team to beat despite the loss to DOR. They lose (F) Mike Palacios to STM but (F) Sean Zhang returns. (G) John Hsu also joins for guard depth.
(N/A) DOR 2-1 This incarnation of Doris From Rego Park has been impressive so far to say the last. New add (G) Zack Koerber has been on a tear and (G) Will Chu is shooting well. Maybe the best backcourt in D1, not to mention (G) Dain Scheibel who is dominating in the weeknight D1. Didn’t even mention (C) Jordan Calhoun‘s return. DOR is stacked.
(N/A) LMA 2-2 Lace’O My Aso has lost two hard-fought games vs teams in the Top 3, but this is finally looking like a steeled, veteran team that knows how to beat the teams they should beat. With (G) Mathew Joshy‘s scoring, if they can get over the hump against the next tier, they can be real contenders.
(N/A) RAR 2-1 Solid season so far for Raining Rosebuds, with (G) Miguel Melbourne at the helm, they have a fiery guard who can score and defend. Depth will always be an issue here, but they have some solid pieces to make a post-season move this fall.
(N/A) SES 2-2 The new team on the block, Sesame Chicken has some talent on the roster. (F) James Zhang and (F) Richard Sun are the standard-bearers, they lead the way. This is a deep roster and it’s not clear yet just how much everyone can contribute.
(N/A) STM 1-2 Another new team coming from SIPAG, Stranger Team is led by the very definition of motor guy, (F) Pete Panos along with (F) Michael Palacios and sharpshooter (G) Joey Chin. They have some exciting new players in the mix as well, if they can get hot, this is a team that could make some post-season noise.
(N/A) LIF 1-2 It’s early in the season and Let It Fly could arguably be 2-1 if not for some bad breaks, but this is a deep team who will score by committee. Especially if (F) Justin Velasquez stays on. The expectation is that LIF will make a move up as the season wears on.
(N/A) SKK 0-3 Rough start for Shawn Kemp’s Kids after sitting out a season. All the usual suspects are back with (G) Donovan Walsh still scoring at a high level, they just haven’t looked very much in sync so far. But as it seems with any team in the field this season, if they can get it together, they can make moves. No easy wins this fall, which may be good or bad.

2ND DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

SXP
2-0 Both wins came against contenders in the Top 3 so yes, the back-to-back champions are still the team to beat. The Sex Panthers have only gotten better with age, able to play themselves out of pretty much any situation. And with teams focusing on (G) David Chu this season, (F) Chris Di and (G) Greg Loeffert have stepped up big. It’s a dynasty in the making.
(N/A) FOB 3-0 This is the best start that Gritty FOB City has seen in awhile and they’re doing it on defense anchored by (C) Victor Chia, and with (G) Ace Watanasuparp leading the chard on offense. (G) David Ri and (F) Kenneth Van are still viable options too. This team is loaded.
(N/A) WOL 3-1 The Wolverines have had championship defense in place since they first came into the league and now with the addition of (G) Nick Abrapour, they may have the perimeter offensive option they need to finally win it all. (F) Nick Liveris has been dominant so far this season.
(N/A) NYU 2-2 NYUnited needs to get their roster settled or they’ll have to forfeit more games.  They just have way too many players and too many that aren’t in the right division. If they can pare this roster down, the core is a solid unit that can be a contender.
(N/A) BOM 1-2 Forget about the no. 5 ranking, the Bomb Squad will be around late into the playoffs. They have the defensive pedigree similar to WOL, and an added offensive option this season with (F) John Mei returning. But this team is still a bruiser of a team led by (F) Sherwin Salar and (C) Joey Bravo‘s physicality on both ends of the court.
(N/A) TEA 1-2 It might be starting to sound like a broken record, but at full strength Teal Curtain is a contender. They just rarely have everyone on the court at once. Lots of guys putting up impressive #s so far, but the results is just 1-2. They should still make the playoffs regardless.
(N/A) TAP 1-2 TAP NY seems to come and go in cycles. After the franchise’s best ever season (despite barely losing in the title game), TAP has struggled to a start this season. And the absence of (F) Jin Bae Kim from the lineup is telling as to why. They expect him back, but will it be too late?
(N/A) GOA 1-2 This is a much-improved Goat Herders team, and though they’re just 1-2 now, they can climb the ladder if they get the chemistry right. The ceiling is high for this squad with an imposing front-court and an exciting new add at the point in (G) Yianni Paranni.
(N/A) RAP 0-3 There is plenty of talent on this Raptors roster, especially at the guard position. The issue has been attendance, and they still have not secured a viable big man. That’s hurt with the opponents they’ve played so far. But, with this group of veterans, don’t be surprised if they make a sudden surge into the playoffs.

3RD DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
SPR
3-1 The three-time D3 defending champion Spaghetti Ramen has picked up right where they’ve left off even with (F) Mark Hahn out for the season. There’s really not much else to say, they’re the team to beat.
(N/A) JPU 2-1 Japan United‘s top 5 players are pretty stacked for D3, attendance may be the ultimate decider as to whether they can challenge SPR for the D3 title this season. All the pieces are here.
(N/A) STR 3-1 Street Dreams will be one of the most entertaining teams to watch this season. With (G) Miguel Melbourne at the helm, they have enough offense to win any game, the trick is locking things down on D.
(N/A) PAN 2-1 Likewise one of the more entertaining teams we’ll see play, The Pandas have do-it-all (F) Ben Wang and (G) Eddie Tsao who is one of D3’s most electric scorers. With another shooter added this season in (F) Zhongzheng Hao, these guys may be on to something.
(N/A) LIF 0-3 Let It Fly may not win many games this season, but they’re definitely a favorite of the league. They always compete and look fresh doing it. (F) Daniel Olmann has been a solid scoring threat in the paint, but LIF needs to get some 3FGs to drop to get some Ws.
(N/A) GOO 0-3 Ditto for Goon Squad, (F) Jon Lau‘s team always goes hard. (G) Leon Cheung has been the scorer they’ve needed–despite inexplicably not scoring last week–and they have a nice option in (C) Felix Zhang in the paint. All teams will make playoffs in this division so it’s really just a matter of building some chemistry for a post-season run.

TDL Fall 2016 Semi-Weekly Power Rankings

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
GMM
2-0 Basically, if (G) Tommy Wong is going to shoot this well all season, then Guard Me Maybe is a danger. GMM loses (F) Jin Bae Kim but gets two newbies (G) Charlie Tran and versatile (F) Brian Law in return. So far, that’s worked out nicely for them.
(N/A) NGC 1-0 Having (G) Ace Watanasuparp and (F) Mark Lee as your primary scorers is formidable for any team, but the biggest add for NYC Gritty Committee may be (F) Bada Hong. The veteran forward looks better than ever, and has always been a steadying influence on the floor.
(N/A) DYN 1-0 It’s a new look roster for NY Dynasty and they’ve a little younger. (G) Will Moy will be a solid floor leader replacing (G) Ren Hsieh, and new add (G) Josh Fan will challenge for the D2 scoring title. The trick, as always with DYN, is making sure guys can make it to games.
(N/A) PRB 0-1 Pretty Boys will bring on (G) James Sung and (F) Andrew Ahn, which means there will be no shortage of hustle play and defense. The key for PRB will be their shooting efficiency. If they can keep their FG% at around 40%, they can win a lot of games.
(N/A) NYE 0-1 There are a number of familiar faces on Team NYCE, but they haven’t necessarily played together before. They’re anchored by 6-5 (C) Andre Lowden. With (F) Jason Chan and (C) Moon Yun on the roster as well, this may be D2’s most formidable front-line.
(N/A) JLA 1-1 New franchise Justice League has plenty of solid pieces on the roster. Power (G) Maxwell Ruffin should be posting big time #s all season and (C) Kasime Cole is a force on defense. If they build momentum, the ceiling is very high for JLA.
(N/A) DPY 0-2 Don’t Ever Play Yourself has a huge front-line, perhaps even bigger than NYE, but the struggle for DPY has been taking full advantage of their size in the paint. They’re getting there, don’t expect DPY to go win-less.
