Fall ’17 Week 4 Power Rankings (D2 WN & D3 WN)

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) GMM
3-1 Reigning MVP (F) Brian Law is having another worthy campaign and GUARD ME MAYBE will ride the wave. Improved play from mini-Brian Law (F) Stefan Chaplin has helped diversify GMM’s offense, and (G) Tommy Wong has been lights out from 3 all season.
(+1) DPY
2-1 Two-time reigning champs, DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF, are right on schedule to defend their title having now given the reigns fully to (F) Tyler McFarlane who is playing out of his mind right now. Never mind the #2 ranking, this is still the team to beat until proven otherwise.
(-1) MLG
3-1 MLGB has built themselves into a contender. They went toe-to-toe with DPY, which proved this team is officially a contender.  (G) Jason Gu, (G) Ruoyu Chen and (F) Bowen Wang are a formidable trio, but rookie (C) Fang Jian Yuan has been a huge reason MLG has made the jump.
(+1) DAW
3-1 D.A.W. (G) Jason Meija is D2’s most exciting player, and already an MVP contender. And so is his teammate (C) Lou Nikki, who has dominate the paint this season, the only big to put up 20 & 10 while shooting 65% from the field. Breaking into the Top 4 is great, but that’s not their ceiling.
(+2) MIX
2-2 After an 0-2 start, MIXED BAG has bounced back to win two straight, albeit, against two teams who have yet to win a game. So, middle of the pack seems like the right place for now. Rookie (G) Effie Klein has proven to be an efficient scorer this season, we’ll see how this team evolves.
(-2) NGC
1-3 NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is struggling. (G) David Chu and (G) Ace Watanasuparp have both seen a huge drop in offensive productivity. And (G) Mark Lee is virtually non-existent. NGC has won a chip and gone to back-to-back title games just a season ago, they gotta fix this.
(-1) JAM
1-3 SPACE JAM could just as easily be 3-1 but they have not quite mastered closing out games. And they have played well overall. Coming off maybe his best season, (F) J.L. Novosad has been even better this season. They have depth at every position, JAM should really be better than this.
(=) UBC
0-4 At first glance, you might ask how UNCLE BOUGHT A COW, a one-time contender with a two-time D2 MVP, could fall to 0-4. The answer appears to be consistency of lineup. (F) Ben Hoynes and (F) Marco Barratta have not been there, which really hurts an otherwise undersized team.
(=) TRI
0-3 TRIBE has some familiar faces on the roster, but they are largely new to each other. (F) Toko Kono, (F) Young Yu and (F) Jonathan Chen will provide consistent scoring, but they need some depth and more consistent effort on the defensive end. They’re otherwise not far away.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+2) YIE
4-1 YIELDMO has the most singular player in D3 in (F) Max Paynter, and until that changes, they’ll be #1. His size, scoring, defense, and ceaseless hustle is unprecedented here. Around Paynter are role players that could star on other teams. This is the hands-down favorite to win it.
(+2) NGC
2-1 NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE (F) Joey Lee is having maybe his best season and has been a key contributor in both their wins. (G) Mark Lee and (G) Teddy Oh continue to be one of D3’s best backcourts. NGC is a contender again this season.
(-2) 30F
3-2 After a strong 3-1 start, 30-FOR-30 looked sluggish last night in a very winnable game vs GA7. They’ll look to bounce back and finish the regular season off with a win, and go into the post-season with momentum.
(-2) SNB
2-2 SMASH N BOUNCE is .500 but they’re the only team to beat the Top 2 teams on this list. Which is to say there is some inconsistency here, but when SNB is tuned in, they can win it all.
(+1) HAN
2-2 The HANDEL ARCHITECTS, now in their 2nd season, have posted two impressive wins in a row. (G) Han Lee is providing a consistent source of points with 18.3 ppg, and they’re getting good all-around contributions from everyone else. Can they keep up this pace?
(+2) FLA
1-2 On paper, the FLAT EARTHERS have plenty of firepower, particularly with (G) Julian Choi settling in, he’ll be one of the best scorers in D3. What they lack now is consistent rebounding and 3-point shooting.
(=) GA7
2-2 GAME 7 picked up a win last night, but we’ll need to see some consistency in the lineup to move them up. Fourteen players have touched the court for GA7 so far, so there’s plenty up in the air. But one things for sure, having (G) Elliott Curtis out there will always give them a chance to win.
(-3) DYN
1-3 After finally picking up their first W vs a tough SNB team, NY DYNASTY looks like they might be getting back on track. For DYN, any season short of competing for a title is wasted, so it’s about time. Adding (G) Evan Leong may be just the competitive fire they needed.
(-1) TBT
0-2 At just 36 ppg, TBT needs some more scoring to really challenge opposing teams. Plenty of season left for them to work their way up the ladder, but 26% FGs and only 27.5 rpg isn’t going to do it.

Fall ’17 Week 3 Power Rankings (All Sunday Divisions)

1ST DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) LMA
3-1 The defending champs, LACE’O MY ASO are picking up right where they left off, getting balanced scoring yet again this season. This may be the most balanced team in the league, solid on offense, defense, and in the hustle stats. (F) Matt Birtwell has been a machine on the glass.
(n/a) DOR 2-1 DORIS FROM REGO PARK always brings a contender, with a healthy dose of tough, grindhouse basketball. And there always seems to be a new face that keeps things fresh. This season it’s (G) Jacob Leizman, a crafty scorer that gives this D-oriented club consistent O, a scary thought.
(n/a) SKW
1-0 When the shots are dropping, no team can run up the score like SK WAR DOG. They don’t have quite as much depth at guard this season with (G) Pat Youreneff out, but (G) Kash Miah and (G) Vegas Dave Wong should provide plenty of firepower.
(n/a) PIP
2-2 Captain (C) Graham Diamond‘s new club, PIPPEN AIN’T EASY, brings in a lot of new faces. The 0-2 start can be chalked up to some growing pains, but they’re getting into rhythm now. This is a tall, versatile line-up that creates match-up problems.  No lack of hustle either.
(n/a) NFZ
1-2 The perennial powerhouse has come out flat so far this season, displaying very little if any sense of urgency. Key rotation players have moved on and their absence is very noticeable. They’ll have to adjust, but after a summer layoff, the offense has not looked particularly crisp or even coherent.
(n/a) SKK
1-2 With two key rotation players leaving to form their own team, SHAWN KEMP’S KIDS is working in some new faces as well. (G) Donovan Walsh continues to be a scoring dynamo, but they’ll have to do it without speedy (G) James Alexander, out for the season with a broken finger.
(n/a) BXB
1-3 On paper, the BRONX BOMBERS look pretty good. But man, did SKW give it to ’em. Expect them to bounce back. This is still the most athletic team in D1 Sun, with an array of finishers, and a PG in (G) Will Guevara who can find them. They just have to improve their base defense.

2ND DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) RAR
1-0 RAINING ROSEBUDS are stacked if they get solid attendance, and that’s always the question with RAR. Adding (G) Caleb Lui gives them a reliable PG who should complement scorer (G) Anthony WIlliams, both are aggressive defenders who can get the team out in transition.
(n/a) BOM 1-1 BOMB SQUAD (G) Alex Tsay is fighting off a leg injury, but if he is able to return healthy, the Bombers will be a contender yet again. Adding (G) Tommy Wong gives them a deep threat they desperately needed.
(n/a) TAP
1-0 With (F) Dave Liu back for TAP NY, they can make a run at the title this season. It hinges on (G) Will Chu. When he is making shots and playing efficiently, he can carry this team offensively to beat any team in D2. He is unguardable at this level when his jumper is falling.
(n/a) WOL
1-1 The WOLVERINES lost a winnable game vs BOM, then held on to beat NFP in any ugly one. They’ll take the result. The addition of (F) J.L. Novosad gives them a deep threat they haven’t quite taken advantage of yet, and he’s just as good a hustle player as the rest of the Wolverines.
(n/a) NFP
0-1 The NO FLY PANTHERS have plenty of firepower, but they’re finesse. When they struggle with attendance, it wears down their shooters, and the shots stop falling. This is an uptempo team that relies on getting a lot of possessions. They either need a bigger roster or to get in better shape.
(n/a) ROC
0-1 They took a heart-breaking loss last week to TAP, but expect the NY ROCKITS to bounce back. This guard-oriented roster dominated D2 WN a few seasons ago with their team speed and versatility.
(n/a) ZHU
0-0 This is a default low-ranking for TEAM JAMES ZHU having not yet played a game this season. As soon as they get their first decision under their belt, we can get a better idea of where they stand.

3RD DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) LIF
3-0 LET IT FLY have the biggest lineup and most athletic roster in D3, with arguably the best player in (F) Daniel Mosley. In other words, LIF is STACKED. If you want to beat this team, you have to keep them off the offensive glass, which they attack relentlessly, and protect the paint.
(n/a) LAR 1-0 Last season’s finalists are back with essentially the same roster. LARRY THE CABLE GUY’S KIDS are a defense-oriented team with three of D3’s best defenders. They rely on (G) Eddie Tsao for offense, and if he has another solid season, expect LAR competing for the chip again.
(n/a) NFZ
1-1 A short-handed NO FLY ZONE OG led LIF in the 4th qtr until they ran out of gas, and (F) Young Wang is still playing All-TDL 1st Team caliber ball. Don’t forget NFZ was the spring champ, and seemed on their way to defending until they bizarrely forfeited in the semis due to attendance.
(n/a) JPU
1-0 JAPAN UNITED narrowly edged CRO in their opener without scorer (G) Ryota Takahashi in the lineup. The team hasn’t had quite the same firepower with (F) Daniel Mosley moving on to LIF, but (F) Marc Lashly has pulled his weight to keep JPU in the mix.
(n/a) BIL
1-0 An impressive opening day win over RIS for BALL IS LIFE led by (G/F) Jason Sun and the always reliable (G) Sean He. Can this be the season that BIL finally makes a move toward contention? We’re here for it.
(n/a) RIS
0-1 RISE AGAIN is basically Spaghetti Ramen by another name. Perennial MVP (G) Leuis Ng missed the first game, so don’t expect them to be here for long. This team has deep championship pedigree for a reason.
(n/a) TW1
1-1 TAIWAN NO. 1 has some solid pieces, and (F) Chuan-Heng Lin is one of D3’s more exciting players to watch. As a newbie club, it’s still too soon to determine where they’ll finish. Their destiny is in their hands.
(n/a) CRO
0-3 And the same goes for the CROSSBOWS. Their (F) Li Jiayuan has also been one of the division’s more versatile and exciting players. But taking the narrow loss to JPU hurts. We’ll see how they bounce back.
(n/a) GOO
0-2 GOON SQUAD probably should have on that game vs TW1. The LIF game was maybe too much expect, but GOO will get solid scoring from (G) Charles Zheng and (G) Robert Zhang. The rest is just making the right plays and getting the stops they need to win games down the stretch.

Fall ’17 Week 2 Power Rankings (D2 WN & D3 WN)

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) GMM
2-0 GUARD ME MAYBE picks up right where they left off last regular season, getting off to a great start at 2-0 while reigning MVP (F) Brian Law has yet to play a game. (G/F) Stefan Chaplin has stepped up ably in his absence.
(n/a) MLG 2-0 They spent the first half of last season getting their feet wet, but they’re fully acclimated now. MLGB is looking to contend for the D2 title, and from the looks of their 2-0 start, they’re ready for the challenge. This is a tough, physical team that doesn’t back  down from anyone.
(n/a) RAW
2-0 The RAW DOGS are a new team replacing Team Hardwood. They have a stacked back-court that loves to launch the three. We’ll need to see more games for better intel.
(n/a) DPY
0-1 It’s just one loss with three key players out, so the defending champs aren’t too concerned. DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF just needs to bide their time while (G) Emery Clark recovers from a knee injury. They’ll be back in winning mode come post-season.
(n/a) NGC
1-1 NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE isn’t getting any younger, and they’re loss vs MLG wasn’t pretty. But this is a team with plenty of veteran savvy. When their guards start clicking offensively, there as much a title contender as anyone on this list.
(n/a) DAW
1-1 There may be no player in D2 who can stay in front of D.A.W. (G) Jason Meija, and the combo with (C) Lou Nikki makes a for a nice 1-2 punch. After losing a tough opener to RAW, they bounced back with a dramatic comeback win over MIX.
(n/a) JAM
1-1 SPACE JAM‘s addition of (F) Nick Liveris certainly bolsters their front line, but it only makes them slightly faster as a team, a glaring need for the team (speed). Still, (G) J.L. Novosad is shooting lights out right now, and when they’re hitting 3s, they’re tough to beat.
(n/a) MIX
1-2 MIXED BAG is (G) Chung Lee‘s third franchise this season, testing the water of D2 WN. (G) Effie Klein has been a solid newcomer with 17.5 ppg on an efficient 59% FGs. Combined with versatile (F) Mark Promax, this team should improve as the season goes.
(n/a) UBC
0-2 It’s been a rough start for UNCLE BOUGHT A COW who looked like a new powerhouse in their last D2 campaign. Granted, they faced two tough opponents, but the #s aren’t pretty. But this is the same roster as before, so expect them to make a move up.
10 (n/a) TRI
0-2 TRIBE is a new team with some familiar faces. They narrowly lost to JAM so they could just as easily have been in their spot. This is default low rating until we can see more games. With veterans in key positions, expect TRI to make a move as well.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) 30F
2-0 30-FOR-30 is back and they’ve gotten off to a strong start. Newcomer (F) Joseph Han has been a beast in his first 2 games and paired with anchor (C) Ezekial Shin in the middle, this will be one of D3’s most formidable defenses. And they can score, too.
(n/a) SNB 1-1 Kind of a roller coaster start for SMASH N BOUNCE who convincingly bested YIE, only to be blown out by 30F last week. (F) Nathan Kan is a proven scorer at this point, but 1 rpg is rough for a team that struggles on the boards in the first place. SNB looks very solid nevertheless.
(n/a) YIE
2-1 The only player more dominant than 30F’s Han right now is YIELDMO (F) Max Paynter. And that’s because he is the most dominant player in D3 right now. With him carrying the load and crafty (G) Zach Sherman at the point, this team could be a contender by season’s end.
(n/a) NGC
1-0 They’ve only played one game, but NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE, last season’s best reg season team, can easily climb back up to #1. (G) Mark Lee, (G) Teddy Oh and (F) Steve Chung are as good a scoring trio as any in D3, and (C) Victor Chia will be D3’s biggest player again.
(n/a) DYN
0-1 There’s no more explosive scorer in D3 than NY DYNASTY (G) David Chu, and no better utility guard than (G) Ian Yu. But the two of them combined with huge adds (F) Tim Chen & (F) Marvin Chu couldn’t get a win over NGC. It will take some time, but DYN has serious firepower.
(n/a) HAN
1-2 HANDEL ARCHITECTS have some very solid pieces with scorers (G) ChangHee Park, (F) Han Lee, and versatile (F) Garrett Brignoli. They just have to keep plugging away and building team chemistry. The wins will come as they improve.
(n/a) GA7
1-1 Newbie franchise GAME 7 bounced back from a blowout loss to HAN with a narrow win over TBT last night. (G) Elliott Curtis and (G) Mike Hamane are the familiar faces on this roster, but it will be interesting to see who can step up for GA7 down the line.
(n/a) TBT
0-1 Tough loss to start the season, but TBT brings in a new roster so it may take some time to get settled in. (F) Alex Lu is the one familiar face, and he’ll bring in defensive toughness and versatility on both sides of the ball.
(n/a) TED
0-1 Admittedly, we expected TED TALKS to fare better in their opener vs YIE. With (G) Julian Choi and (G) Steve Shin, they should have plenty of scoring. And (F) Sam Kang is as big and tough as they come. Surely they can do better than last week’s effort.
