TDL Spring 2016 Week 6 Power Rankings

1(+2) SPR 4-2 Spaghetti Ramen tends to get it all together come playoff time. They aren’t multi-time champions for no reason. This team hasn’t been the most consistent, but with former MVP (G) Leuis Ng at the helm, and (F) Mark Hahn anchoring the defense, they’re championship caliber again. They’ll play GMM tonight for the outright no. 1 seed. 
2(-1) GMM 4-2 After debuting at no. 1 last week, Guard Me Maybe had a poor showing with a full roster vs a desperate NGC trying to stay alive for the playoffs. But, this is still a team with a potent offensive back court, they just haven’t been consistent on defense. If they get that right, the title is within reach.
3(+1) SKL 3-3 Skillshare has all the pieces to make a title run with one of the league’s top PGs in (G) Elliot Curtis running the offense. (G) Michael Hamane, (F) Scott Sullivan and (C) Anthony Hull round out arguably the best top four in the league, the key is getting everyone on the same page and committed defensively.
4(-2) DOR 3-3 All of a sudden, Doris From Rego Park runs the risk of falling out of the playoffs should they lose to BDL in the season finale. Nobody in D-3 plays harder, but their last two losses haven’t been very encouraging. Both saw key players missing from the roster, so maybe this is just a matter of getting into the playoffs. At full strength, this is a team that can win it all if they get hot.
5(=) NGC 3-3 Since ordaining themselves the “worst team in the league,” NYC Gritty Committee has been on a tear, nearly securing a playoff spot with two straight wins. (G/F) Mark Lee has been unstoppable and (C) Victor Chia has been dominant in the paint. They control their own fate. A win and they’re in. If they lose, they can still make it, but will have to wait and see how BDL finishes. 
6(=) avi_TDL_D_02DYN 3-3 On the verge of mathematical elimination from the post-season, the NY Dynasty recovered from a 15-pt deficit to secure a playoff spot. (G) Ren Hsieh and (C) Steve Song make one of the best duos in D-3, but they’re at their best when everyone makes plays up and down the roster. This could be a dark horse contender.
7(+1) BDL 2-4 They started this season as a farewell tour, not really expecting too much, but all of a sudden Make BDL Great Again on the cusp of making it to the playoffs. A win tonight and they’re in. (G) Tran Truong is one of D-3’s most dangerous shooters. That’s really their primary attack, tough D anchored by (C) Dan Tak and getting open 3FGs in transition.
8(-1) FRE 2-4 Slim chance here for the NY Freemasons. They have to beat SKL, then hope BDL loses, and try to squeak in based on point differential. Which means, they’d have to beat SKL by a lot of points. Ironically, they beat the top two teams in the league, but that won’t help them here.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 5 Power Rankings

1(+1) MWW 3-1 Their attendance has been sporadic, but Meta World War is a well put-together team in which its members often click both offensively and defensively. Ball movement is key on offense and (F) Nick Pelletier has fit in perfectly. On defense, they use their length and athleticism better than any other team in the league.
2(+6) DYNavi_TDL_D_02 3-1 If MWW’s defense is Premier’s most imposing, then the NY Dynasty are a close second with (F) Fred Simpson in the lineup. Simpson has been an instant boon to DYN’s aging roster on both sides of the ball with his tireless play. Coupled with (F) George O’Garro, already one of the league’s top defenders, they make up for a relatively disjointed offense.
3(=) FASavi_TDL_D_02 3-1 The Free Agents are one of the league’s top offenses, but also among its worst defenses. Nevertheless, this is veteran group of scorers who play with no lack of effort. They aren’t big in the front-court, but they are versatile in that their bigs can defend a number of positions. (G) Alok Aiyar has played well with (F) Arjun Ohri and (F) Tyree Williams out, but they’ll need both to make a real title run.
4(-3) GMMCRJ_Kiss 3-2 It doesn’t look like scorer (F) Jason Mendell will be joining Guard Me Maybe this season, but (F) Darnell Cudjoe has given the team a different look with his Draymond Green-style game. But even after adding (G) Landon Glover and (G) Gino Calderon to bolster the back court, the team often looks unsure on offense. They have plenty of firepower, but have struggled to finish close games. 
5(+1) SALfranchise_logo_Sal_Team_6 3-2 It’s been hard to peg Sal Team 6 this season, their lineup seems to change every game. (F) Parker McClelland has been tuned in all season, but this team, which usually hurts you from the 3-pt line, hasn’t shot particularly well this season. And they’re not getting much more in the paint either. This team has hit a bit of a wall it seems, but they’re still +.500 so you can hardly count them out.
6(-2) TIMavi_TDL_D_02 1-3 Tim Nubina is an imposing team to look at, easily the league’s biggest lineup up and down the roster, and very obviously skilled, with nearly every player on the roster a threat from 3. But, for whatever reason, they have dropped 3 in a row after an opening season win. They’re hoping the addition of (F) Chris Bethel will help turn things around.
7(-2) BOOboomtown 1-3 Every season, Boomtown is the hardest working team in show business. They’ve taken a few tough losses now, but as long as they’re in the playoffs, they’re a danger to get hot and take it all. For that to happen this season, though, they’ll need to have more than (G) Jack Delighter to shoot over 50% from the field. Outside of Delighter, no player on the roster is shooting better than 36%.
8(-1) 70SEric_Forman_02 1-3 This is about as mercurial team as there is in this division. When That 70s Team is playing at their best, they look unbeatable. Fielding a lineup that is second only to TIM in overall size, with bigs that have just as many all-around skills, they seem like they’re underachieving. Like GMM, they look like unsure who to go to in crunch time. 
9(=) NYKfranchise_logo_NYK_Spartans 1-4 The NYK Spartans have looked overmatched in their early games this season but the addition of (C) Chris Lemoine has certainly helped their cause, not to mention (F) Chris Youn‘s wily play. They got their first win over a more talented 70S team and that will be the m.o. for the rest of the season. They will be the underdog in every game, and they’ll have to find some way to manufacture wins.

RECAP: It was a barrage of threes that gave Raining Rosebuds as much as a 20-pt lead in the 1st half. They led 44-27 at halftime, but the Free Agents didn’t fold. They put on their own 3-point assault, led by (G) David Chu, who made a season-high 9 3FGs to help his team outscore RAR 52-25 in the 2nd half, the most scored by any 1st Division team in a single half. FAS (C) Mike Song put up his best performance this season with a 19 pts, 10 reb double-double, and (F) Sekani Thompson had yet another great all-around game.

Player of the Game: Mike Reding (NFZ) 22 pts, 13 reb

RECAP: The Asphalt Ninjas played zone for most of this game, which if history has shown, is a bad idea against the very flammable Yung No Fly Zone side. Surprisingly, NFZ didn’t shoot very well, but their work on the offensive glass gave them plenty of second chances. ASN (F) Chi Ming Pun was the only viable offensive option for the Ninjas until a late flurry of 3FGs from (G) Justin Chin. (C) Ibu LeGrande‘s second arrival gave ASN a boost in the 2nd half, but it wasn’t enough to slow the red hot Flyers.

Player of the Game: Ryan Chan (SHA) 18 pts, 4 ast

RECAP: With both teams playing with just five players, X1 was able to keep this one tight down to the very end of regulation, forcing an extra period to decide it. Shawty (G) Ryan Chan and (G) Justin Kiat both had their best performances of the season, so far, to help SHA get the win. X1 (C) Michael Boord followed up a strong outing last week with another one this week. (G) Rhod Vivas and (F) Greg Francisco also shot well in the game, but X1 just wasn’t able to muster up the makes they needed to hold on in OT.

RECAP: Teal Curtain’s backcourt (G) Ian Zack and (G) Alex Gochal is one of the best duos in the league, but it’s been (F) Noah Scovronick that’s helped make them the dominant team they’ve been this season. And he wasn’t available for this game. With Scovronick out of the lineup, Gritty FOB City was able to dictate the tempo, and force TEA to adjust and readjust their defense. Both (G) David Ri and (G) Steven Chung played well, which isn’t always the case, and with (C) Victor Chia facilitating, that was enough to get the edge in this win that keeps them alive for the playoffs.

RECAP: With (G) Derik Kumagai essentially shutting it down for the season, and no playoff prospects, No Fly Zone OG didn’t play with the kind of urgency they needed against a fully loaded Sex Panthers team. They were simply outmatched right from the tip. The Panthers were clicking on all cylinders, dominating at every turn, and making shots. They simply overwhelmed a NFZ team that found itself shrugging its team shoulders more and more as the game wore on.

RECAP: Doris From Rego Park had to play this one without (G) David Weiss in the lineup, but it wasn’t exactly a handicap as (F) Billy Katz had it going all night. DOR dominated NY Dynasty in the 1st half, leading by as much as 15 pts. But, in the 3rd qtr, DYN made adjustments on both sides of the ball, and they started to change the tenor of the game. They would take the lead in the 4th. Despite a couple of tough late 3’s from Doris, DYN (G) Ren Hsieh and (C) Steve Song helped close it out by hitting 7-9 FTs in crunch time.

RECAP: If you thought Make BDL Great Again was satisfied with their win over NGC, this one here would you make you think different. Despite 11 3FGs from the Freemasons, BDL was strong on defense, forcing FRE to settle for 30 3-pt attempts. It was a solid all-around effort but key 3FGs from (G) Jae Kim, along with great hustle on the boards from (G) Chris Chao and (C) Dan Tak, helped to put BDL in what seemed to be unlikely playoff position. BDL will control their own fate next week, a win and they’re in.

RECAP: There were moments when this game had a playoff intensity to it, players were hitting the deck hard, but playing through it. Overall, though, Guard Me Maybe, coming in ranked no. 1 in the power rankings, looked sluggish, and struggled to get back on defense. They also had no answer for NGC (G) Mark Lee in the paint, who scored a season-high 30 pts in the win.

RECAP: With key players out of the Skillshare lineup, Spaghetti Ramen was en route to to a blowout win. That is until an altercation forced SPR (G) Leuis Ng to be ejected from the game. (G) Elliot Curtis would lead his SKL team on a 2nd half run, but SPR (F) Mark Hahn‘s effort on defense was enough to hold them off.

RECAP: The early game of the night often goes to the team who can get enough players on the floor. Boomtown was short-handed, as could be expected, but Guard Me Maybe came in with a full roster, and just overwhelmed BOO in the 2nd half. It was a solid effort all around for GMM, but if BOO can take some silver lining out of this loss, (F) Jake Moreno finished with 25 pts in his second game back in the lineup.

RECAP: When That 70s Team is in sync, they look unbeatable, but then they have games like these when no one looks like they’re on the same page. That left the door open for the Spartans, who never quit in any game, to come in and steal this win. Big time shooting from NYK (G) Ace Watanasuparp helped his Spartans team get their first win of the season.

RECAP: Both teams played dead even in the 1st half, but NY Dynasty noticeably upped their defensive intensity in the 2nd. Even with former Fordham (F) Chris Bethel arriving late for Tim Nubina, Dynasty held their ground, turning TIM’s missed shots and turnovers into easy finishes in transition. DYN (F) Fred Simpson has been the catalyst since joining the team two weeks ago. He is the perimeter defender they’ve been missing.

RECAP: Meta World War showed up with just four roster players, but picked up a sub to make 5. It was just enough to knock off Sal Team 6 side that struggled with their perimeter shooting for most of the night, all except for (F) Parker McClelland that is, who was knock down. It was McClelland who gave them the push to try and steal this one late, but key buckets in the paint by (F) Chaz Thomas and (C) Stedford McCleod helped MWW close this one out.
