TDL Fall 2016 Semifinals Playoff Preview (D3 Sun)

(1) STREET DREAMS vs (4) JAPAN UNITED

Semifinals – Sunday (11/13) 2:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Street Dreams has been the most consistently good team all season and they are red hot right now. They even won their inter-divisional game playing vs D2. (G) Miguel Melbourne leads the way with an MVP caliber season, but this is a team with plenty of veteran players who know what it takes to win.
STR
5-1

59-55

JPU
2-4
Japan United‘s Top 5 players are as good as any in D3. They blew out STR in the reg. season. (G) Ryota Takahashi & (G) Osamu Tanigawa are the pace setters, they’re the fastest back court in D3. (F) Daniel Mosley & (F) Marc Lashly set the tone in the paint. When they get hot, they can beat anyone.
Key Player: Miguel Melbourne

Melbourne’s been the best player in D3 this season, able to affect the game in very facet, and take over at any moment to help lift his team to a win. STR’s success has been thanks to play big in big moments.

X-Factor: Neil Dumadag

Dumadag is one of D3’s top defenders and hustle players, but when he gets shot going, STR is a very difficult team to stop. His ability as a secondary scorer makes it tough to double Melbourne.

Key Player: Daniel Mosley

If Tanigawa and Takahashi are the pacesetters, Mosley is their anchor. He does the dirty work, scores in the paint and rebounds. The trick is how quickly he can get in rhythm. ‘Cause when he is, he can score a ton.

X-Factor: Ryota Takahashi

JPU scores a lot of points (often at the sacrifice of defense), and a big reason for that is Takahashi’s speed and aggressiveness in the open court. When he is hitting his shots, JPU can hit you from all angles.

(2) SPAGHETTI RAMEN vs (3) THE PANDAS

Semifinals – Sunday (11/13) 5:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Spaghetti Ramen are the three-time defending champs for a reason. They play hard and play smart, going all out on defense and letting (G) Leuis Ng run the show. They’re missing dominant defender (F) Mark Hahn but have more offense this season with (G) John Lee and (F) Teddy Lo expanding his game.
SPR
4-2

61-57

PAN
2-4
The Pandas are a real threat to upset SPR because of match-ups. But the trick is offense. (G) Eddie Tsao is maybe the most aggressive offensive player in D3, and (F) Leo Fu and rookie (G) Zhongzheng Hao have given solid supplementary scoring, but this is mostly in transition. In half-court , they tend to get stagnant.
Key Player: Leuis Ng

As good as Melbourne has been this season, Ng has been that good for pretty much every season. Thus his multiple MVP awards. At this point, if you don’t already know what he brings, it’s your fault.

X-Factor: John Lee

Lee is a tricky kind of player, he is a solid defender and can fill in as a game manager, but every now and then he’ll catch fire and make a lot of shots. You just never know when it’s gonna hit.

Key Player: Ben Wang

Wang is the most versatile player, and maybe best defender, in D3. He is a great passer, though he tends to hold the ball too long in the half-court. Still, he runs the show, this team goes as far as he takes them.

X-Factor: Eddie Tsao

Tsao is fast and has great offensive skills, but his shot selection can be questionable, and sometimes shots just aren’t going in. But he is always a threat for a big scoring day if teams don’t get back on D.

TDL Fall 2016 Week 7 Power Rankings (D1, D2, D3 WN)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments

DYN
3-2 It’s been an interesting season in that no team–including the no. 1 NY DYNASTY–has stood out as the outright favorite to win it all. But two of this team’s three wins come against the rest of the Top 3. Despite the two losses, DYN appears to be the team to beat.
(=) HON 3-1 The HONEY BADGERS bring their trademark defensive effort back to weeknights and they are once again contenders to win it all. Veteran (C) Rich Chang has been a solid addition to fill up the paint, he seems to fit right into what the Badgers do best.
(+1) PWC 3-2 When PWC IIII makes their 3FGs, they’re tough. (G) Dain Scheibel & (F) Matt Modrick have been All-TDL First Team caliber players this season, they’ve consistently given PWC a chance to win every night. Also not to be overlooked is (F) James Reingruber‘s infectious hustle.
(-1) 70S 2-2 THAT 70S TEAM is loaded with talent and now they’re finally looking like they know how to use it, going 2-1 in their last 3, just barely losing to PWC on Oct 19. (C) Martin Brusewitz has been quietly dominant and (G) Shaun Crummy will finish as D1’s most versatile guard.
(-1) ABN 2-3 Packed with hustle players, the AQUA BEST NINJAS have a top of the line scorer in (F) Jason Wu, by far the league’s biggest player in (C) Rigo Sargeant and now a backcourt that has seen it all before. Luckily for them, all teams make playoffs, where they should thrive.
(=) TOP 1-4 The TOP STARS are the only team to beat a fully loaded DYN so far this season. Which says a lot about their ceiling. Rookie (C) Quinn Hood has been a force right away, complementing TOP’s regulars well. And (F) Mike Song‘s physical style also seems to fit right in.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments

NYE
4-1 Since adding (F) Jarrett McCrea, the JUSTICE LEAGUE hasn’t just won 4 straight, they’ve won by an average margin of 23.5 ppg. Which means they will likely move up into the D1 playoffs should this level of dominance continue. JLA is red hot right now.
(=) NGC 3-0 This is a veteran team with all the right pieces in place. NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is undefeated right now and haven’t even really woken up offensively. They’re pacing themselves for the playoffs, expect this team to go late into the post-season and contend for the title.
(=) DYN 3-1 NY DYNASTY are a guard-heavy team, but they’ve finally found the right front-court to fit their style of play. (F) Danny Lung is a defensive-minded, mobile big and (F) Tim Chin is a heady, knockdown shooter, both perfectly complement (G) Will Moy and (G) Josh Fan.
(-3) GMM 2-2 When (G) Tommy Wong is shooting well, GUARD ME MAYBE always has a chance. But they can’t rely solely on that. GMM hasn’t had much depth in the front-court–they’re strength is their guard-play. But if they can get (F) Brian Law to more games, they may turn this around yet.
(-1) PRB 1-3 The PRETTY BOYS haven’t looked themselves lately. This is a team built around (G) David Chu‘s scoring, but despite a very solid 23.3 ppg, he hasn’t been at his best. They need to bring in another scorer and if he is a permanent add, (F) Chris Di is a good choice to do that.
(+1) DPY 1-4 DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF picked up their first win and a big part of that is thanks to mid-season addition (G) Terence Stroude. This is a new team that still has a long way to go to build the chemistry needed to win consistently in this league, but this is a good step forward.
(-1) NYE 1-4 They took a disappointing loss to DPY in Week 6, but TEAM NYCE has more than enough talent on the team to turn this around. Luckily, all teams will make playoffs so if they can get momentum going into the post season, an upset may be on the horizon.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SKL
4-1 SKILLSHARE took their first loss in a bit of a deflating kind of game. (F) Scott Sullivan went out early to a sore back and (C) Anthony Hull was late to the game. For as good as this team is, they are better than the sum of their parts. They need everyone there and healthy to win it all.
(=) 30F 5-1 This might be the surprise team of the season so far, but there’s always a couple in D3. 30-FOR-30 is largely unpolished but they are young and make up for mistakes by playing with a ton of energy. They also have (F) Adam Wang and (C) Ezekial Kim, likely All-TDL 1st Team players.
(=) RIS 2-2 They haven’t been invincible this season, but JUST RISE is essentially the same Spaghetti Ramen team with no (F) Mark Hahn. Now, that’s a big hole to fill, and they won’t be able to, but they got a big win over SKL last week that means it’s getting close to playoff time.
(+1) UBC 3-2 As long as they have (G) David Weiss on the floor, UNCLE BOUGHT A COW has a chance. This team is also young, with key players new to the league, but like 3oF, they play with great energy.
(+2) DYN 2-4 NY DYNASTY has had a number of low-post options fill in, but they couldn’t get any of them playoff eligible, which will hurt in the playoffs. But their backcourt of (G) Steve Shin and (G) Ren Hsieh will be one of the tougher ones to defend come playoff time.
(-2) LEG 1-4 The truth is, LEGO‘s assembled talent is better than their record, but for whatever reason, they have not been winning games. Continuity from the roster for each game is definitely a big part of it. If they can get hot going into the playoffs, this team is good enough for a deep run.
(-1) NYK 1-4 The NYCAC KINGS showed up big in their win last week over UBC. They needed that one to build some momentum going into the playoffs. Every team makes it so they’ll have a chance to pull of an upset. Rookie (G) Kavin Zhao has been a force all season.

NFZ
4-0 At this point it’s as if it doesn’t matter who YUNG NO FLY ZONE has on the floor, they know how to scrape out wins. But despite their 4-0 record, NFZ’s continuity may be called into question, something that has haunted them in playoffs past.
(+1) DOR 3-1 DORIS FROM REGO PARK just keeps plugging along. They play with a huge, unshakable chip on their shoulder and come playoff time, that will be their primary advantage. No team has better perimeter defense. (G) Zach Koerber is still the MVP front-runner right now.
(+1) LMA 3-2 In the last power rankings, it was suggested that LACE’O MY ASO had to beat a Top 3 team to really be considered a contender. Well, they did just that in a thriller vs SKW on Sunday. (G) Mathew Joshy is one of the most electric scorers in the league. When he has it going, watch out.
(-2) SKW 1-2 Due to scheduling issues, SK WAR DOG has only played 3 games so far, their two losses to Top 3 teams. They miss (G) Kash Miah‘s long-range firepower, and they may not be the “team to beat” at this point anymore, but this team has plenty of veteran depth to get it done.
(=) RAR 4-1 This ranking may look like disrespect given their record, and RAINING ROSEBUDS should certainly use it accordingly, but they haven’t beaten a team with a winning record yet this season. Still, (G) Miguel Melbourne is playing MVP ball this season, and the team is clicking.
(=) SES 2-2 SESAME CHICKEN has only played one game since the last rankings came out, and it was mostly with subs. No movement here.
(+2) SKK 1-4 Just as soon as SHAWN KEMP’S KIDS get a win, they drop a tough one to DOR. SKK should make the playoffs, they’re still in it by the math, but they need some consistency on offense. If (C) Graham Diamond can continue to be a force offensively, they have a chance.
(-1) STM 1-4 After a slew of tough losses, STRANGER TEAM‘s solid showing early on is fading. They have consistent, well-balanced scoring, and no shortage of energy, but defense has been a surprising weakness. It isn’t immediately obvious what’s wrong here, but something needs to change fast.
(-1) LIF 1-4 Three straight losses and LET IT FLY is in the same position as STM. The solid start they had is looking like a missed opportunity now. Roster consistency has been a surprising problem, but if (F) Rich Baptiste is a permanent addition at least they’ll have scoring accounted for.

2ND DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

(=)
SXP
3-0 This veteran unit continues to find ways to win, and perhaps for the first time as SEX PANTHERS, both (G) David Chu and (F) Chris Di are thriving offensively in the same season. This is an offensive juggernaut. And now, (F) Michael Lee adds young legs and defense.
(=) FOB 5-0 This is still the same GRITTY FOB CITY but this season they’re taking full advantage of their 50-50 opportunities to scrape out a win. And (G) Ace Watanasuparp is playing MVP ball right now. As long as they can keep (G) David Ri engaged and scoring, they can win it all.
(=) WOL 4-1 The WOLVERINES are a powerhouse this season, and that’s thanks in large part to a great season from (F) Nick Liveris offensively to support their trademark D. They still have poor offensive stretches that tend to keep games close, but they seem to have found the resolve to win.
(+1) BOM 2-2 BOMB SQUAD is a low-key contender. They haven’t been amazing this season, but when they want to assert themselves defensively, they can beat any team. (F) Joseph Bravo has been a force on this end, but better offensive efficiency will help BOM break into the next level.
(-1) NYU 2-3 Composure haunts NYUNITED, they do just fine when they’re winning. But as soon as they face adversity, they have not exactly found productive ways to overcome it. (F) James Zhang and (F) Rich Sun are two of the most talented players in D2, and they have good speed at the guard position, this team should be better than 2-3.
(=) TEA 1-2 Due to scheduling issues, TEAL CURTAIN has not played since the last power rankings. No movement here.
(=) TAP 1-4 This could be considered a down season for TAP NY but (F) Jin Bae Kim is back now and despite the loss to WOL, he already makes a difference. If they can squeak into the playoffs, anything can happen with this veteran group.
(=) GOA 1-3 It feels like the GOAT HERDERS are right on the cusp of breaking out, but now they may be losing (G) Gianni Paranni to injury for a number of games. (C) Frank Ward continues to be a dominant presence in the paint and with (F) Pete Tsevdos, GOA’s size will give them a chance.
(=) RAP 0-4 Just in the nick of time, the RAPTORS will get (F) Mike Adames back. Which puts RAP in the Top 3 talent-wise, but it might just be too late. Mathematically, they can still sneak into the playoffs, but they’ll have to play just about perfect ball from here on out.

3RD DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

SPR
4-1 SPAGHETTI RAMEN is the benchmark for D3 teams and now they are even finding ways to win without (G) Leuis Ng on the floor. This will be the team to beat until someone proves otherwise.
(=) STR 4-1 Their one loss came short-handed to a tough JPU squad, but otherwise STREET DREAMS might be the team to challenge SPR. (G) Miguel Melbourne is playing MVP ball and they have the hustle pieces to battle SPR’s effort on 50-50 plays. Plenty to like on this team.
(+1) PAN 3-2 After a solid run, THE PANDAS hit the wall against an STR shooting lights out. It was just an off-game from top to bottom so throw it away. This team still has the overall talent to win it all. (G) Eddie Tsao, (F) Leo Fu and (F) Ben Wang are as good a big three as any in D3.
(-2) JPU 2-3 As mentioned, JAPAN UNITED tends to be as good as who shows up to play. They lost 91-81 to GOO in Week 6, which means no defense was played whatsoever. It’s not JPU’s strong suit, but they’ll have to do a lot better than that on defense to win in the playoffs.
(N/A) GOO 1-4 Talk about shooting lights out, GOON SQUAD scored an unbelievable 91 points in their win over JPU. That is just absurd. But they have more scoring than they’ve ever had before, and if they can keep the hot streak going into the playoffs, you just never know.
(N/A) LIF 1-4 All teams will make playoffs, so LET IT FLY has one more game to build its team chemistry heading into the post-season. This is a team with a lot of players running together for the first time. If they can get some kind of unified strategy, they have solid pieces here.
