Fall ’17 Week 2 Power Rankings (Premier and D1 WN)

PREMIER DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) DYN
2-0 The new-look NY DYNASTY have played well so far with new faces in key positions, but this isn’t a powerhouse team. It’s a veteran squad that knows how to play well together, they’ll likely fall to middle of the pack but they were the best team after two weeks.
(n/a) PNL 2-0 PEACE & LOVE finally found the knockdown shooter they were looking for in (G) David Melendez, and it’s opened up a their offense, allowing (G) Gus Gauntlett to really flaunt his court vision. The veteran PG is on pace for a record-setting season in assists so far.
(n/a) SHO
1-0 They’ve only played 1 game, but SHOWCASE NYC looks the part of the the powerhouse in the way that DYN does not. Solid guard play, but their front-line will carry the load as one of Premier’s best led by bruising (F) Joe Vines and walking match-up problem (F) Mike Liander.
(n/a) WHG
1-1 WE HAD GAME has lost some depth at the wing positions (maybe), but new (G/F) Richard Shea has filled in well as an efficient scorer. Reigning MVP (G) Michael Springer will still lead the charge. With a full line-up, this may be the best offensive team in the league.
(n/a) LB3
1-2 LIVE BY THE 3‘s line-up is essentially all guards with one athletic big man in the middle in the tireless (F/C) Tim Cole. Despite losing their first two games, they showed promise. Then (G) Kevin Josey showed up last week and torched defending champs MWW for 44 pts. Uh-oh.
(n/a) MWW
0-2 Tough start for METTA WORLD WAR, but the defending champs have only one goal, and that doesn’t really get started until playoff time. Key starters haven’t even shown up to a game yet, so don’t count these guys out by an stretch. They’re still very much contenders.
(n/a) SKY
0-2 Lots of new blood in the Premier this season including SKY, who despite the two losses, also looks very promising. Neither L was a blowout, more a circumstance if warming up slowly. This team can and will shoot a lot of 3FGs. SKY can light it up from deep if you let them get going.

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) LIZ
2-0 THE LIZARDS are back with the division’s biggest front-line, carrying 3 players all around 6-4 along with big, physical wing players. Their #s won’t jump out at you, but this is a veteran team that knows how to make winning plays. (G) Joe Zenz at point makes it look easy.
(n/a) HON 1-0 At this point, the HONEY BADGERS are the Buffalo Bills of D1, having lost in the championship 4 times out of the last 5 seasons. With no real roster changes, this team will get it done the same way. Scrap on defense, and find a way to win, tooth and nail be gone.
(n/a) YOL
2-0 This is YOLO‘s best start to a season so far, but they haven’t played a top half team yet. This next stretch of games will determine if they really belong in the Top 3. Nevertheless, the team has put up solid all-around efforts in their two wins so far. Momentum is in their favor.
(n/a) CRV
1-1 The former champs are interested in only chips, so the CRAFTY VETS will do what it takes to make the playoffs, and turn it on from there. (G) Chris Daley is still the best scorer in D1. With (G/F) Travis Benjamin and (F) Daryl Blank back, they have even greater depth than before.
(n/a) GA7
0-1 GAME 7 already has a skilled veteran back-court, and solid pieces all around the front-court. But now, they’ll also have D1’s tallest player in 6-6 (C) Noah Leime. Granted, he’s kind of a stretch 5, but his height will give GA7 an instant advantage in the defensive paint.
(n/a) HOO
1-1 The HOODIE MELOS are a new team led by long-time veterans (G) Jason Chin and (G) Kev Chang. They have not scored particularly well so far, but still find themselves 1-1. The roster is physical, but undersized, which means they’ll have to pick up shooting asap.
(n/a) UNN
1-2 Roster consistency has been tricky for UNITED NATIONS so far. They have had 13 players participate in at least 1 game so far this season. (F) Joseph Bassey has been the one stable presence through each game, and he’s put up solid #s so far. But they need more consistent scoring.
(n/a) VIN
0-3 VINO has plenty of big and versatile players to work with, but they just haven’t had consistent perimeter scoring so far. Team foot speed has been an issue and their struggles to create off the dribble may be the cause for their 19% 3-point shooting after 3 games.

(4) NY DYNASTY vs (5) NYK SPARTANS

Premier Division Playoffs (1st Rd) – Wednesday, June 14, 8pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
During the regular season, the NY DYNASTY came from behind to beat SPA, barely holding on in the final seconds. But they did not have (F) Michael Reding in the line up for that one, the team’s top scorer. The addition of (C) Ezra Hoover has been huge, bolstering their back line defense, and giving them an athleticism they lacked.
DYN
4-3

63-61

SPA
3-4
When (G) Josh Hyon joined the NYK SPARTANS, he brought new life to an aging back court. Now he is one of the Premier’s most exciting guards to watch. With his addition, (F) Young Song‘s numbers have declined, but the Spartans needed the additional scoring option for a more versatile attack. If they get hot, this team can win it all.
Key Player: Michael Reding

Reding has been hit or miss on WNs in the past, but this season he’s been red hot, making a career-best 6.3 3pg for 22 ppg. Contributing across the stat sheet, he’s been DYN’s best player this season.

Pos: F
22 ppg
6.3 rpg
8 rpg

Pos: G
21.5 ppg
2.8 3pg
3.8 rpg
Key Player: Josh Hyon

The rookie Hyon has a knock down mid-range jumper and is a nifty ball-handler, able to find his way to the hoop for easy buckets. He is an efficient scorer that will need the focus of the opposing D.

(3) METTA WORLD WAR vs (6) PEACE & LOVE

Premier Division Playoffs (1st Rd) – Wednesday, June 14, 9pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
METTA WORLD WAR‘s defense hasn’t been as airtight as in the past, but they still have the league’s top defensive player in veteran (F) Chaz Thomas. Offensively, they’ve been solid. Despite total team ppg being down, (G) Shamel Arasmo & (C) Stedford McCleod have steadily score 20+ ppg. And they have three other double-digit scorers who can break out any time.
MWW
5-2

65-60

PNL
2-5
PEACE & LOVE has a whopping five double-digit scorers led by (G) Morgan Blakely and (F) Seamus McKiernan. Defense has been the issue, giving up 67 ppg while scoring just 65 ppg. But they have kept most games relatively close with an efficient offense, and if they can pick up their defense late in this one, they might have a shot at upsetting the former champs.
Key Player: Shamel Arasmo

Arasmo has long been one of TDL’s best scorers. He doesn’t beat you with outright speed, he is crafty at getting to the rim and has unlimited range from behind the arc. If he’s shooting well from three, MWW is almost bulletproof.

Pos: G
22.4 ppg
3.8 apg
1.8 spg

Pos: G
20 ppg
6.2 rpg
2.8 apg
Key Player: Morgan Blakely

The veteran guard has been a work horse, consistently leading his team in scoring and hustle plays. Blakely is a big, physical guard who isn’t afraid of the dirty work. His team just needs to get over this hump and find a way to upset.

TDL Spring 2017 Week 6 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

PREMIER DIVISION

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SIX
4-0 Still undefeated, TEAM SIX has just found ways to win. Four players are scoring in double-digits so far this season, so they come at you with as balanced an attack as ever. Speedy (G) B.J. Davis could be a break out player this season.
(=) WHG 4-1 Point (G) Michael Springer is leading the way for WE HAD GAME with sharpshooters (G/F) Jordan Schultz and (G/F) Zack Simmons on the wings. They don’t have much in a low-post threat this season, but so far they haven’t needed one.
(=) MWW
2-2 This is more losses already than we’re accustomed to seeing for METTA WORLD WAR, but rest assured they will still make the playoffs and contend for the title this season. With their full roster, no team has more firepower or a better team defense.
(+2) DYN 2-2 NY DYNASTY bounced back with two straight wins after a poor start. (F) Osazee Omokaro is back, and has given DYN the defensive lift they needed. (F) Michael Reding has also returned, and has been red hot from behind the arc this season, making 6.3 3pg at 53%.
(-1) SPA 1-2 Getting (G) Josh Hyon on the floor is great for the NYK SPARTANS, but despite a strong 26-point debut, SPA couldn’t quite pull out the win. But the Spartans will finally get the consistent perimeter scoring they’d been lacking for the past several seasons.
(-1) PNL 1-3 It’s good to see (F) Seamus McKiernan inching closer to the 20-10 machine he was before injury, but defense has been PEACE & LOVE‘s weakness again this season. Not particularly long or athletic, PNL needs a more cohesive team defense to get stops when they need them most.
(=) STM 0-4 STRANGER TEAM has also struggled with cohesion, in all facets. This is a young team with great energy and athleticism, but they haven’t quite turned all that into winning plays. If they get it together, though, this is a team that could make a move.

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) CRV 5-1 CRAFTY VETS took a loss by forfeit then bounced back with a huge 90-73 win over OPA last night. In (G) Chris Daley, they have the best player in D1, and only one team has come close to challenging them.
(=) GA7 3-2 The loss to OPA wasn’t a good one, but they do have a win over YOLO on the resume, and played CRV tougher than any other team so far. So for now, GAME 7 will stay at #2. But put it in pencil.
(=)
YOL
3-2 Their numbers don’t dazzle you, but YOLO has gotten solid wins against HON and OPA. They have three new players with double-figure scoring output led by (F) Warren Green‘s 13.7 ppg.
(=) OPA 3-2 So far so good for OPTION A, even after the blowout loss to CRV. The scoring duo of (F) Phil Thomas (15.8 ppg) and (F) Haris Ahmed (17.4 ppg), with (G) Scheed Bailey (10.6 ppg) has been potent enough so far.
(=) HON 2-2 The only consistency the HONEY BADGERS have seen so far is (F) Zach Moretti, the only player to have played in every game. They will probably still make the playoffs, but they have to get their rotation set.
(=) JLA 1-4 Rough season so far for JUSTICE LEAGUE, they were already a streaky shooting team, and this season the shots just aren’t falling. JLA is shooting just 21% from three. And there hasn’t been much in the paint either.
(=) STA 1-4 STADIUM STARS have some solid young players who compete in every game with fire. It’s just going to take some time for the team to gel as a unit and develop a cohesive defensive strategy.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1) UBC
3-1 UNCLE BOUGHT A COW (F) Ben Hoynes is playing MVP ball, leading D2 with 14.8 rpg. With his work on the glass and the all-around effort of rookie (F) Marco Barratta, the front-court has been more than a supporting cast for (G) David Weiss.
(+2) DPY
4-1 They score by committee and don’t put up a lot of points, but DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF plays tough physical D that keeps games close. And this season, they’ve found ways to pull out close games.
(-2) HAR
3-2 TEAM HARDWOOD has been solid, losing two games by six combined points against the only teams above them. They should contend, pairing a big front line with a crafty (G) Justin Rigney.
(+1) SKL
4-2 It’s been an up and down season for SKILLSHARE, but they’ve won the games they should have won. But with the bigger lineups in D2, they will need a full roster to contend for the title.
(-2)
NGC
3-2 The defending champs are interested in only one thing, getting back to the championship game. Once the playoffs start, you should see a sudden uptick in the effort from NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE
(+1) JAM
3-3 SPACE JAM‘s front line is as big as they come in D2 and (F) J.L. Novosad has scored well this season. And so has (G) Liam Lee and (F) Jon Clark. The result of all this is a .500 record. JAM is a wild card.
(-1) GMM
1-5 Tough season for GUARD ME MAYBE, even after getting (F) Brian Law back in the lineup. GMM was just never able to build any continuity, looking uneven in most games after a big win to open the season.
(=) ROT 0-5 Newbies DA ROTI PROJECT has not worked so far, but as with many expansion teams, it can take time. This is a very big roster so working in a proper rotation should be a priority for next season.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SPR
4-1 Another MVP caliber season for (G) Leuis Ng as he leads SPAGHETTI RAMEN. (F) Matt Auerbach remains a solid option, though his scoring has dipped, and (F) Mark Hahn hasn’t even gotten going yet.
(+2)
DYN
3-2 As well as Ng has played this season, NY DYNASTY (G) David Chu may be the front-runner for MVP. And two of his teammates can vie for the Defensive MVP. This team is top heavy, but if Chu is on, look out.
(-1) YIE
4-2 The combo of (G) Derek Lu and (F) Max Paynter will be tough for any team to beat in the playoffs. YIELDMO will be a contender right away when the post-season begins.
(-1) BIN
2-2 TEAM BINY has taken a couple of tough losses, but come playoff time you can expect this team to challenge for the title. If (G) Tony Cuadrado can get playoff eligible, he bolsters a deep roster of guards.
(=) NGC 3-2 Solid season for (F) Steven Chung, he’s shooting more consistently for NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE than he has in awhile. NGC is never a deep team, but they have personnel who could move this team up.
(=) SNB 2-3 SMASH N BOUNCE is in solid playoff position with wins over WSW and NET, but they can do themselves a big favor with one more win. It won’t be easy, playing all Top 4 teams the remainder of the season..
(=) WSW 1-2 WHAT IS A SEAWOLF? keeps getting their games pushed due to some bad luck, but they have an MVP candidate, too, in (G) Tommy Zheng, if they can just win some games now.
(=) NET 0-6 This certainly isn’t the result the NASTY NETS were hoping for, but it’s all about getting reps with the team. Even the defending champion DYN took several seasons before they could contend.
