TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – First Round

(4) SK WAR DOG vs (5) RAINING ROSEBUDS

First Round – Sunday (9/11) 1pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
It’s been a quiet season for SK War Dog. With no (G) Kash Miah or (F) Sean Zhang in the line-up, it just doesn’t feel like the same team. But, don’t get caught sleeping on them just yet, (G) Pat Youreneff and (G) Dave Wong still provide plenty of firepower, and (F) Mike Palacios‘ all-around contributions are integral, even if they don’t always show up on the stat-sheet. This is still a team that can make a dark horse run at the title.
SKW
3-3

62-56

RAR
2-4
It’s been said time and again, with a full roster, the Raining Rosebuds can compete with any team. But, you just never know who is going to be available on any given day. They have a wealth of options at the guard spot, but are limited on the front-line. (F) Mitch Moxley is a very capable shooter & rebounder, but he shouldn’t be forced to play center. If (F) Zheng Zeng is available, RAR might have a shot in this one.
Key Player: Pat Youreneff

The veteran guard can go on a hot streak as good as anyone, but the trick is staying focused. When things falter a bit, he can get distracted with complaints about the officiating. When he’s tuned in, he can be the best player in the league.

As much as (G) Miguel Melbourne is the fire behind the stove for RAR, Jaffee is the player that keeps this team even-keeled and balanced. It’s not about the numbers for Jaffee, it’s about putting his team in the best position to win.

(2) YUNG NO FLY ZONE vs (7) SHAWTY LIKES THE WAY I BALL OUT

First Round – Sunday (9/11) 2pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Yung No Fly Zone has been biding their time, quietly getting their players back for a title run. Now, they’re ready. (F) Michael Reding is back, so is (F) David Farnham. With (G) Ren Hsieh taking a bigger role, and (G) Sal Nasser‘s addition to the team, this is a roster that can put up some big time points. The trick will be whether they can also get up to playoff defense, too.  NFZ
4-2

69-61

SHA
1-5
Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out actually won its season opener vs NFZ, but it’s been all downhill from there. SHA doesn’t have very many playoff eligible players on the roster, and with the personnel they do have, they’ll need to really be hot from the 3-pt line. It’s certainly possible, (G) Deric Kung and (F) Sam Lu are big time 3-pt shooters. They just need to get the looks, and maybe SHA can take down NFZ.
Key Player: Michael Reding

The 3-time D1 MVP is back just in time for the playoffs, but is he in shape after several weeks off? If he is, he’s NFZ’s best shooter and rebounder. Not to mention a very able and willing passer. Reding can and will do it all.

Lu is SHA’s best all-around player this season, and his numbers show it. Unfortunately, he’s been called upon to score so much, his defense has suffered a bit. They’ll need a lot of Lu today to have a chance vs NFZ’s many weapons.

(3) SPACE BADGERS vs (6) ISS FLIGHTZ

First Round – Sunday (9/11) 4pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
The Space Badgers have all the they need to make a low key run at the title, but this is a defensive-minded team that has versatile players, but no go-to scorer.  But they have excellent balance, (G) David Hsiung and (F) J.L. Novosad have the ability to get hot from 3. (F) Sam Deadwyler can finish with the best in transition, and it goes without saying what (G) Alex Tsay and (F) Sherwin Salar create off defense. NFZ
4-2

57-53

SHA
1-5
Their regular season game was an all out battle, and despite the ISS Flightz‘ record, when they have a full roster, this is a very tough team to beat. (F) (F) Jason Wu is a proven scorer, (F) Will Hu a good slasher. (G) Kyle Lew provides 3-pt shooting and gritty D, and (C) Wei Fan Zheng is a huge option at 6-6. The question always comes down to who will provide a little depth for their starters. They have rarely had more than 5.
Key Player: Alex Tsay

Tsay is a multi-time Def MVP that can change the game with his tenacity on D. When he falters is when he redlines too soon and takes himself out of the game. This is crucial for a team with no other PG on the team.

Wu can score from any spot on the floor and especially thrives when defenders are smaller than he is. But fitness can be a problem, he’s not in the best shape and he can get tired. When that happens, he’s a liability on defense.

TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – Semifinals (D2 WN)

(2) BOMB SQUAD vs (6) GUARD ME MAYBE

Semifinals – Wednesday (9/7) 7:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
It’s not the deepest team in D2, but Bomb Squad‘s top 5 are as good as anyone. They don’t have 3-pt shooting, but they score well in the paint, and their defense is tough and physical, esp in the front-court. Even if the shots aren’t falling, you can count on their effort on D.
BOM
5-2

55-52

GMM
4-4
It took Guard Me Maybe a little longer than they’d hoped to reach their potential, but they’re here. Now, BOM is a team diametrically opposed in their roster & offensive approach. This one comes down to who will enforce their style–exactly what GMM did to NGC in Rd 1.
Key Player: Sherwin Salar

BOM is built on Salar’s versatile skills. He is their best rebounder, passer, and a top defender. It’s just that the effort can leave little energy to score, and sometimes BOM needs that most.

X-Factor: David Hsiung

Hsiung is also a solid all-around vet who is never short on effort and makes the right plays. When he’s able to get it going from the 3-pt line, BOM becomes a tough team to keep pace with.

Key Player: Jin Bae Kim

Even when Kim isn’t scoring, he can dominate a game with his all-around play. His speed and quickness has no peer in D2. And he has the motor to match. Look for a big game vs a slower BOM line.

X-Factor: Tommy Wong

The veteran Wong always hits you when it hurts you most. He can be a streaky 3-pt shooter, but clutch 3FGs are his forte. When he gets it going, it opens up the paint for Kim and (G) Kento Kato to take advantage.

(1) GAME 7 vs (4) MAGIKARPS

Semifinals – Thursday (9/8) 8:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Game 7 hasn’t finished a game this season in which their opponent was within double-ditis. That’s should be an indication of how much they’re expected to win it all this season. No team is deeper, or better offensively and defensively. This is basically a parade to the coronation.
GA7
7-0

65-52

MGK
4-4
It wasn’t the most convincing rout to the semifinals, but here stands BK All Day one win away from returning to the title game, where they’ve been twice before (winning once). It’s a veteran unit, with Premier’s top rebounder, and a deadly shooter. All they have to do is get hot.
Key Player: Justin Ngo

Ngo started season quietly, content with finding his teammates, but he’s now topped 19 pts in 3 of his last 4, including 31 in Week 7. His 3-pointer is knockdown right now. Oh and he’s the best passer in the league.

X-Factor: Sooin Lee

Lee’s bread & butter is speed and the ability to finish in transition. He’s the main weapon GA7 uses when converting TOs into easy buckets. If you’re not careful, he’ll hang 20 on you before you know it.

X-Factor: Angelo Green

If Lam is the key to MGK even being competitive, then Green is the guy who might be able to steal them a win. He’s a widely un-scouted player but he can do it all. And if the shots falling, you just never know.

TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – Semifinals

(1) METTA WORLD WAR vs (4) NY DYNASTY

Semifinals – Wednesday (9/7) 8:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Defending champs, Metta World War, were untouchable this season until they got too comfortable in a Week 7 loss to ASN (when only 4 players showed). It’s probably just what they needed to get focused for this title run. MWW is yet again the unquestioned front-runner.
MWW
6-1

72-65

DYN
4-4
The NY Dynasty haven’t been a notable team this summer, but after an impressive, dominating win over SPA, they should put up a better effort than the regular season rout MWW put on them. The defensive personnel is better now, and the offense finally seems to be clicking.
Key Player: Shamel Arasmo

Arasmo’s speed & aggressiveness is the catalyst to MWW’s offense. His teammates feed off it. But he can get himself into trouble sometimes, too, with a bit of tunnel vision. Finding balance is the key.

X-Factor: Nick Annacone

If he gets hot from three, there’s little you can do to stop Anncone. His high, quick release (and range) are almost unguardable. When he’s making shots, the MWW offense feels unstoppable.

The veteran has gradually assumed the role of DYN’s #1 option and it’s been a pretty good fit. The offense can still get stagnant with no real 3-pt threats, but Glover is strong enough 1-on-1 to create opps.

X-Factor: Oz Omokaro

When Omokaro is healthy, he covers as much ground on D as anyone. His physicality is a great complement to O’Garro’s length on the defensive back line. And when he’s scoring, too, it’s a huge bonus.

(2) TEAM SIX vs (6) BK ALL DAY

Semifinals – Thursday (9/8) 8:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
The only team to give MWW a real challenge, Team Six has been on a several seasons-long quest for their first TDL championship. This is as deep and loaded a roster as ever. The backcourt adds give SIX great depth, but (F) Marcus Brown has also been big for the front court.
SIX
6-1

71-67

BKA
3-5
It wasn’t the most convincing rout to the semifinals, but here stands BK All Day one win away from returning to the title game, where they’ve been twice before (winning once). It’s a veteran unit, with Premier’s top rebounder, and a deadly shooter. All they have to do is get hot.
Key Player: James Hudson

Hudson started the season strong but has cooled off from three lately. He has the speed and athleticism to get virtually any shot he wants, so if he gets hot, he’ll be a big option on a very deep team.

X-Factor: Scott Weisfeld

Weisfeld has been the heart & soul of the team all season. As adept at finding teammates as he is at making shots. But his best ability is his relentless D. When he’s keyed in, this is a very tough team.

The numbers haven’t been off the charts, but Dolar is the catalyst for this offense. He is relentless, and plays with fire. And when his legs are feeling good, he creates easy buckets for the whole team.

X-Factor: Anthony Fonseca

Fonseca has been nursing injuries but he finally looked like his old self in Rd 1 going for 18 pts on 6 3FGs. At his best, Fonseca is actually more like a #1 option, particularly when it comes to playoff time.

TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – First Round

(4) NY DYNASTY vs (5) NYK SPARTANS

First Round – Wednesday (8/31) 8pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
The roster has been short all season, and they’ve just barely scraped into the post-season, but the NY Dynasty is a team with championship pedigree. If they get hot, they can go all the way. But they’ll have to get more consistent 3-pt shooting. DYN shot just 27% this season, a franchise worst. But what they do have going for them is length and versatility on D. When they force TOs, they get easy points. And they need as many of those as they can get.
DYN
3-4

61-60

SPA
3-4
NYK Spartans started the season strong as they needed to do, but expectedly hit some trouble when facing the higher tier teams in the league. But they made it to the post season, even scrapping last game. SPA has the league’s best front line with (F) Young Song, (F) Askia Davis and (C) Jin Hong, but it leaves them without a true SF. What SPA really lacks is a go-to slasher who can finish, especially with DYN’s length on D.
Key Player: Landon Glover

Glover contributes all across the board for DYN, but he’s often asked to do so much, he tires late in games. Or coasts for some stretches. Still, he gives DYN two one-on-one threats with (G) Garrett James. And at this level, sometimes that’s enough.

(3) TIM NUBINA vs (6) BK ALL DAY

First Round – Wednesday (8/31) 9pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Tim Nubina has the pieces they need to contend. They have great size, though they tend to spend more time outside the paint, and they have solid guard play. The issue this season has been a consistent effort on defense. They don’t have great speed or length as a defensive unit, but if they put their minds to it, they should dominate the boards. TIM
5-2

65-62

BKA
2-5
BK All Day reaches the playoffs on a technicality, ASN is disqualified from the post-season. This is a veteran team with good size and 3-pt shooting, but for whatever reason, it just wasn’t working this season. Which isn’t to say they can’t turn it around right now. If (G) Honey Tufail and (G) Rommel Dolar get hot from the perimeter, anything is possible.
Key Player: S. Perunicic

At his best, Perunicic is a deadly shooter with nearly unlimited range, but he has a tendency to go off the rails when things don’t go his way. If he stays focused, and stays away from the refs, he can dominate. One hot stretch of games could mean a title run.

(3) NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE vs (6) GUARD ME MAYBE

First Round – Tuesday (8/30) 9pm at Murry Bergtraum HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
NYC Gritty Committee added (F) Brandon Sang to the roster this season to bolster their front-court. Which seemed to help (G) Steve Chung get more open looks. But last season’s MVP candidate (F) Mark Lee has been noticeably quiet. The truth is, this team hasn’t had any consistency in their lineup, with subs coming in and out. But they still have a core group from last season’s semifinals run. If they can get quick chemistry, they have the pedigree to win it all.
NGC
5-2

58-53

GMM
3-4
Guard Me Maybe has been maybe the toughest team to gauge in D3 this season. They have great young speed in (G) Kento Kato and (F) Jin Bae Kim, along with veteran back up in (G) Tommy Wong, but they just haven’t been consistent. They did, however, get into the playoffs by winning 3 of their last 4 games. The only bad news is (F) Al Chen being designated out for the rest of the season with a flare up in his knee. He had otherwise been a huge mid-season add for GMM.
Key Player: Steve Chung

This season, Chung has shot well and his #s are vastly improved. If’s also a huge difference for his team as his range helps spread the court for NGC’s bigs to get better looks, and to open driving lanes for teammate (F) Mark Lee. If he continues to shoot well, this is a real tough team to beat.

Kim is the arguably the quickest, most athletic player in D2. He is versatile, plays with a great motor on both sides of the ball, and he is a nightmare to guard in transition. His weakness might be reading the D. At times he can get tunnel vision, but if he’s hitting his mid-range shot, he can dominate the game.

(4) MAGIKARPS vs (5) NY DYNASTY

First Round – Wednesday (8/30) 7pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
In their first match-up, DYN took control of the game early and got the easy W. But, the Magikarps didn’t have (G) Angelo Green or (F) Henry Lam in the lineup. The two have been the team’s MVPs this season so obviously this will be a vastly different game. Green and Lam will give MGK the weapons to test DYN’s aging defense. MGK
3-4

52-54

DYN
3-4
This is the rare lower seed getting a spread in their favor. That’s because the NY Dynasty made it look easy in their regular season match-up. But again, MGK didn’t have key players. But neither did DYN. Since (C) Len Kamdang has joined the roster, plus a resurgence from (F) Wilson Wang, DYN has been much stronger headed into playoffs.
Key Player: Henry Lam

There might not be a stronger guy going to the hoop than Lam. He’s built like a mini-tank, has good speed in transition, and a big motor on the defensive end. He can dominate on both ends of the court and the Magikarps will need him to do so.

(1) SPAGHETTI RAMEN vs (4) STINKY TOFU

Semifinals – Tuesday (8/30) 7pm at Murry Bergtraum HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
The defending champions are right on track to defend their title, riding their #1 seed to an easy 1st rd win over MYP. Spaghetti Ramen (G) Leuis Ng is having one of his best-ever seasons, and should be a shoe-in for MVP. The tricky part may be whether (F) Mark Hahn is able to play. The perennial All-Def Team honoree re-aggravated a long-time shoulder injury this season, and won’t be 100% even if he is cleared to play.
SPR
7-1

60-57

TOF
5-3
A couple of very positive things came out of Stinky Tofu‘s first round win over FRE. (G) Eden Chuang had his best game of the season and (G) Paul Savino continues to bring a great all around effort. Which means they got the win despite a quiet night from (F) Carson Yiu. If they can continue to get this kind of balanced scoring, they very much could get back to the title game. And why not try to knock off SPR right now rather than in the chip.
Key Player: Leuis Ng

The veteran Ng is a perennial MVP candidate–especially this season–for a reason. He’s the catalyst for SPR’s offense, doing his best work out in transition, and orchestrating the team’s half-court sets. He brings an all-around game in which you’ll see big #s in almost every statistical cat.

(2) DORIS FROM REGO PARK vs (3) NY DYNASTY

Semifinals – Tuesday (8/30) 8pm at Murry Bergtraum HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Even with (G) David Weiss out of the lineup in the 1st rd, Doris From Rego Park had enough to knock off LEG–though it wasn’t exactly easy. (G) Zach Koerber stepped in with a big effort to help carry DOR to the semifinals. But now, facing a veteran team like DYN, they could use every man on deck, particularly a savvy veteran like Weiss who is as effective on defense as offense. DOR
7-1

58-54

DYN
6-2
In the reg season, DOR dominated the NY Dynasty, who played with a limited roster, and no bigs in the lineup. This week, they will have (F) Steve Song but not defensive maestro (C) Dan Tak, which means they’ll have to find a way to outscore their opponent. (G) Ren Hsieh looked tuned in as ever en route to a league-high 28 pts in the 1st rd., and they’ll need a repeat performance to beat DOR.
Key Player: Zach Koerber

With Weiss out, the rookie Koerber stepped up well enough to get his team the win. Koerber is big for a guard in this division and his all-around skills give DOR a versatile offensive weapon and a defender that plays with motor.
