TDL Summer 2016 Week 2 Results (D2 SUN)

Gritty FOB City (1-1) 54
Sex Panthers (2-0) 60
Sun (7/17) 12pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Chris Di (SXP) 21 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: For once, Gritty FOB City’s offense looked rather fluid with (F) Mark Lee filling in, the ball moved well and FOB looked like a fairly effective, potent offense. Even if they didn’t quite get (C) Victor Chia as involved as they maybe should have. But either way, FOB couldn’t get enough stops down the stretch to overtake the Sex Panthers in the 4th qtr. And that’s despite holding (G) David Chu to just 11 pts on 3-17 FGs. But the Panthers are the deepest team in the league, and (F) Chris Di and (G) Greg Loeffert were able to pick up the slack. Di finished with his second straight game of 20 points or more.

Raptors (1-1) 48
Goat Herders (0-2) 44
Sun (7/17) 1pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: M. Adames (RAP) 20 pts, 12 reb

RECAP: By no stretch of the imagination would anyone call this a well-played game. Both teams had their ugly moments in what was essentially a slug-fest, but for the Goat Herders, finally getting (F) Pete Tsevdos, (F) Pete Stanojevic and (C) Gus Konidas on the floor obviously makes a huge difference. Even if only one of the three can get it going on the offensive end, GOA can compete. In this case, it was Konidas who scored an efficient game high 24 points. But GOA also had no answer for Raptors new add (F) Mike Adames who put up his own highly efficient 20 pts, 12 reb effort. With Adames, the Raps might finally have a the finisher they’ve needed.

No Fly Zone OG (2-0) 56
Larry the Cable Guy’s Kids (0-2) 43
Sun (7/17) 4pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Kevin Wong (NFZ) 9 pts, 14 reb

RECAP: Two weeks in a row, Larry the Cable Guy’s Kids have had to play two teams with a lot of pedigree on the roster, if also aging legs. And for two weeks, the Kids have put up solid showings, but the major difference seems to be experience. As with FOB, No Fly Zone was able to close this game with better execution in the 4th qtr, with a PG who could control the game late. For what its worth, LAR played harder, created more second chance opportunities on the glass, and were the aggressor on defense. They just could not make shots. It didn’t help that (G) Eddie Tsao saw an off day, or this could have been a very different game.

TAP NY (1-1) 44
Teal Curtain (1-1) 61
Sun (7/17) 5pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: N. Scovronick (TEA) 27 pts, 11 reb

RECAP: After a disappointing spring season, TAP NY got back on track with a win last week but despite their good team speed, they could not contend with Teal Curtain’s superior size up and down the roster, in particular (F) Noah Scovronick, who dominated the paint. TAP had no answer for him, and despite a flurry of 3FGs from (G) Will Chu to create some buzz in the 2nd qtr, their second half fell flat. Chu got surprisingly little support offensively from (G) John Hsu and (F) Jin Bae Kim. Credit Teal Curtain’s physical defense for that. At full strength, Teal Curtain is a contender despite falling out of the playoffs last season.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 1 & 2 Results (D1 SUN)

WEEK 2

ISS Flightz (0-1) 36
SK War Dog (2-0) 52
Sun (7/17) 11am at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Dave Wong (SKW) 18 pts, 4 reb

RECAP: The ISS Flightz missed most of the 1st qtr of this game, which put SK War Dog on the line shooting technical FTs until they arrived. That left ISS with a 0-13 deficit to start the game. For their part, ISS fought hard to get back into it, but never could get over the hump. ISS (F) Jeffrey “Birdman” Lam shot well, but they just couldn’t produce enough offense to overcome the deficit. The Flightz defended (G) Pat Youreneff well, holding him to just 7 pts on 0-10 FGs, but they couldn’t contain (G) “Vegas” Dave Wong who scored a game-high 18 pts in the win.

Shawty Likes the Way (1-1) 52
Free Agents (1-0) 77
Sun (7/17) 2pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: S. Salar (FAS) 16 pts, 14 reb

RECAP: Last week Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out was able to get (G) Deric Kung going early from the perimeter to keep them in range to close out a defense-oriented win. But this week, Kung shot just 1-11 and the SHA offense never quite got it going against a more physical defense from the Free Agents. With freedom to run a point forward kind of role (F) Sherwin Salar put up a signature all-around game with 16 pts, 14 reb, 7 ast. But there was good ball movement up and down the roster as FAS shot a scorching 51% from the field. Even with SHA (F) Sam Lu getting more aggressive in the 2nd half, they couldn’t keep pace with a red hot FAS squad.

Raining Rosebuds (0-2) 51
Yung No Fly Zone (1-1) 61
Sun (7/17) 3pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mike Reding (NFZ) 22 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: After last week’s loss, Raining Rosebuds (G) Joseph Jaffee got offensive help from (G) Miguel Melbourne and (F) Mitch Moxley. Even if neither of them went off, their presence helped structure RAR’s offense, and helped new additions fill in better. But this game was decided by Yung No Fly Zone’s relentless offensive attack. Every time it seemed as if RAR would make a run to close within single digits, NFZ would make a big 3FG or find a layup in transition. New add (G) Sal Nasser fit in perfectly with NFZ’s attacking style and (F) Mike Reding was deadly as usual. (G) Ren Hsieh, called up for the short-handed roster, also helped NFZ close out late.

WEEK 1

SK War Dog (1-0) 52
Raining Rosebuds (0-1) 32
Sun (7/10) 12pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Dave Wong (SKW) 21 pts, 3 reb

RECAP: With no big men and no established shooters available, the Raining Rosebuds were simply outmatched, even against the aging 5-man roster of SK War Dog. RAR (G) Joseph Jaffee, one of the league’s best facilitators and versatile PGs was thrust into the position to shoot more than he might be comfortable with as RAR worked in new players. And nobody was able to get it going as RAR shot a paltry .196 from the field. Meanwhile, the continuous wave of offensive attack from (G) Dave Wong and (G) Pat Youreneff finally broke the seal in the 2nd half as SKW cruised to victory.

Shawty Likes the Way (1-0) 48
No Fly Zone (0-1) 42
Sun (7/10) 2pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Deric Kung (SHA) 21 pts, 7 3FGs

RECAP: This was an historically ugly game for Yung No Fly Zone, shooting a franchise worst 2-29 from behind the arc, with sharp-shooter (F) Saleem Ahmed going 0-9, and 0-11 from the field. But NFZ defended well enough to win this game, except that they let Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out (G) Deric Kung get hot. And once he got there, nothing NFZ could do would cool him off. Nevertheless, NFZ had chances to win this game, but uncharacteristically poor clock management did them in as SHA (F) Sam Lu closed this one out at the FT line.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 2 Results (D2 WN)

Mo Speights, Mo Buckets (0-2) 32
NY Dynasty (1-0) 55
Tue (7/12) 7pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mo Hoque (DYN) 19 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: Mo Speights, Mo Buckets started this game strong, making some tough shots against an unorganized defense and a less organized offense. But the NY Dynasty quickly turned it around in the 2nd qtr as (G) Ren Hsieh put his players in the right spots and DYN got focused on defense. As DYN started knocking down perimeter shots, MOS just didn’t have the firepower to keep pace.

Guard Me Maybe (0-2) 41
NYC Gritty Committee (1-1) 51
Thu (7/14) 8pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mark Lee (NGC) 19 pts, 4 reb

RECAP: Guard Me Maybe had their chances in this one, but only (G) Kento Kato came through with any discernible offense. NYC Gritty, on the other hand, got another strong outing from (G) Mark Lee, and (F) Steven Chung chipped in a double-digit scoring effort. NGC (C) Victor Chia also finished with one of his best defensive performances in the past few seasons.

Pretty Boys (2-0) 61
Bomb Squad (1-1) 53
Thu (7/14) 9pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Caleb Lui (PRB) 20 pts, 6 reb

RECAP: Bomb Squad had to bring in subs to make five for this one, and none of them could figure out how to stop a red hot Sex Panthers backcourt. (G) David Chu and (G) Caleb Lui combined for 44 points on 18-36 shooting. BOM got three double-digit scoring bids, and a strong all-around effort from (F) Sherwin Salar but it wasn’t enough to hold off PRB.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 2 Results (P)

NY Dynasty (1-1) 65
Asphalt Ninjas (0-1) 59
Wed (7/13) 7pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: G. James (DYN) 23 pts, 6 reb

RECAP: For the second week in a row, the NY Dynasty got off to a less than imperative start, but this time they got away with it. Playing without (F) George O’Garro in the lineup, and a late arriving (G) Landon Glover, it was the hot shooting of (G) Garrett James that held this one together for DYN. The Asphalt Ninjas showed some eye-catching young talent with college sophomore (G) Ryan Kennedy  leading the way with 24 points in his debut.

Meta World War (2-0) 67
Sal Team 6 (0-1) 64
Wed (7/13) 8pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: S. Arasmo (MWW) 15 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: This was the best game we’ve seen in the Premier so far this season as Meta World War faced as evenly matched a team as they’ve seen for some time. Sal Team 6 new additions (G) Scott Weisfeld & (G) James Hudson‘s creative scoring helped SAL go toe-to-toe with the defending champs. This was a game that could have easily gone either way, but MWW executed just slightly better than SAL down the home stretch, just enough to get the win.

Tim Nubina (2-0) 81
Bronx-Lebanon HC (0-2) 77
Wed (7/13) 9pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: D. Stanojevic (TIM) 24 pts, 8 3FG

RECAP: There were moments, namely when (G) Duke Stanojevic and (G) Stefan Perunicic were dropping deep 3-pt bombs from every angle, that it looked like Tim Nubina would run away with this game. But they never showed much sense of urgency on defense and left the door open for Bronx-Lebanon HC’s 31-pt 4th qtr to nearly steal this game. Give it up for BLH (G) Courteney Tabron who bounced back from a quiet Week 1 effort, and (F) Jimmy Noel, who hit four consecutive 3FGs in the 1st half to keep BLH in it. Nevertheless, it is TIM that improves to 2-0.

BK All Day (0-1) 66
NYK Spartans (1-0) OT 70
Thu (7/14) 9pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Askia Davis (SPA) 15 pts, 11 reb

RECAP: If MWW vs SAL was the best played game so far this season, then this one has to be the most exciting. With a let down. The NYK Spartans, with off-season addition (F) Askia Davis leading the way, led by as much as 20 pts late in the 3rd qtr as a short-handed BK All Day struggled to find the stroke. But they never quit and didn’t panic. They turned up the intensity on D, wisely lured SPA into possessions late into the shot-clock, and answered with transition 3FGs, or more accurately 7 3FGs from (G) Honey Tufail in the game’s final 12 minutes to tie this game and force OT. In the extra period, NYK regained its composure and struck first. But BKA’s clock management, well played in regulation, just up and left them in OT with a mishandled loss.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 3 Results (D3)

Stinky Tofu (1-2) 50
Dem Boyz (0-2) 47
Tue (7/12) 8pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Carson Yiu (TOF) 18 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: This was a game in which the ebb and flow turned sharply as the game grew closer to the end. In the 4th qtr, both teams seemed to go on runs that could have otherwise gotten a win, on any other day, until the momentum suddenly crashed back to shore like a violent storm. Dem Boyz could have, maybe even should have, won this game, but it was the steady hand of the veteran Tofu who prevailed.

LEGO (1-1) 41
NY Freemasons (2-1) 52
Tue (7/12) 9pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Steven Wong (FRE) 18 pts, 9 reb

RECAP: The Freemasons controlled this game early on, limiting LEGO to just 11 points in the 1st half. But as LEG’s guards gradually became more aggressive defensively, FRE struggled to hold them off. LEGO made a strong run in the 2nd half that made you think, if they had played this way all game, they might have won. But it was FRE’s own key steals from (F) Mike Lee and (F) Thomas Chen in the 2nd half that helped preserve the win.

Spaghetti Ramen (1-1) 49
NY Dynasty (2-0) 53
Thu (7/14) 7pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ren Hsieh (DYN) 18 pts, 3 ast

RECAP: Defending champs Spaghetti Ramen led this entire game until NY Dynasty (F) Steve Song made the go-ahead basket in the game’s final moments to steal a win for DYN. This was a game largely controlled by Ramen’s physicality and defense, they led by as much 13 points, but the Dynasty never stopped battling. Despite (G) Ren Hsieh going down in the 4th, DYN trailed just 5 pts, and got the stops they needed to eventually take the lead. DYN’s game winner came from a pick & roll feed from (G) Steve Lee to a cutting Song on a play that SPR had defended well all game. This time, they just found a away to make it work. A classic finish between two of D3’s most evenly matched teams, both contenders this season.

Fatties (0-2) 18
MYPC (1-1) 41
Thu (7/14) 7pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Steve Shin (MYP) 14 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: The Fatties struggled to many shots, especially from the perimeter, connecting on just 2-17 3FGs, and 7-51 total FGs. Their 14% shooting is a league-wide low so far this season. And much of that is due to MYPC (C) Ju Zhang‘s presence in the paint. He basically took away any opportunities for FAT to get close looks at the bucket, and well, there was nothing going on outside. (G/F) Steve Shin matched a season-high 14 points and picked up his first double-double of the season.

Skillshare (1-2) 39
Doris From Rego Park (3-0) 48
Thu (7/14) 9pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: David Weiss (DOR) 20 pts, 3 stl

RECAP: Skillshare (F) Scott Sullivan kicked this game off in style by scoring his team’s first 10 points, but with no (G) Elliot Curtis and (G) Michael Hamane in the lineup, SKL struggled to keep up the pace in the 2nd half when Doris From Rego Park’s defense shifted its focus on Sullivan. Meanwhile DOR (G) David Weiss had it cooking, too, reaching 20 pts for the 2nd game this season, bouncing back from a disappointing spring campaign. If not for SKL (C) Anthony Hull‘s late arrival to keep this game relatively close, this one could have been much worse as DOR rolls to its 3rd straight win of the season.

Teal Curtain (0-1) 38
Sex Panthers (1-0) 50
Sun (7/10) 11am at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Chris Di (SXP) 20 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: The early game doesn’t suit everyone but Teal Curtain controlled this game early on with (G) Alex Gochal taking the reins. But Sex Panthers (F) Matt Parker made key jumpers to keep his team close, and SXP gradually overtook a tired TEA side playing with just 5 available players.

Larry the Cable Guy’s Kids (0-1) 53
Gritty FOB City (1-0) 72
Sun (7/10) 1pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Kenneth Van (FOB) 16 pts, 5 reb

RECAP: It’s always tough for a new team to take on veteran former champs like Gritty FOB City, but Larry the Cable Guy’s Kids went toe-to-toe until the 4th qtr when FOB finally broke through. One thing’s for sure LAR (G) Eddie Tsao is one to watch. He may now be the fastest player in D2 with moves to spare.

No Fly Zone OG (1-0) 70
Goat Herders (0-1) 23
Sun (7/10) 3pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Young Wang (NFZ) 30 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: Half of the Goat Herders roster, and all of their bigs, became unavailable just hours before game time, so they never really had a chance against a No Fly Zone OG team built to never again suffer through the same embarrassment they did last season. This team is built to win.

TAP NY (1-0) 61
Raptors (0-1) 51
Sun (7/10) 4pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jin Bae Kim (TAP) 18 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: It was never a pretty game for the Raptors, but they seemed to finally get control in the 4th qtr. That is until they let TAP NY (G) John Hsu hit three consecutive 3FGs to give TAP the lead back. TAP then unleashed super-sub (F) Jin Bae Kim‘s boundless energy on a worn out Raptors side, turning a what seemed to be a wire-to-wire game into a 10-pt win.
