Sum ’17 Week 4 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+3) DYN
3-0 NY DYNASTY has two former MVPs on the roster in (F) Will Haile and (F) Mike Reding, so firepower they have. But they have scraped by in games vs the Top 5 (CRV doesn’t count). But better to scrape by with wins than losses. Haile is putting up stupid numbers right now.
(=) 808 4-1 Upstarts 808s & FASTBREAKS haven’t lost any momentum, losing only narrowly to DYN in Week 3. Rookie (G) Aaron Smith continues to be electric while posting MVP-worthy #s. 808s new pieces have fit in well and they’re starting to look like a real contender now.
(=) AXA
3-2 Old and slow, AXA-RODD seems to find a way to win, except when they find ways to lose. Every game has come down to the wire, but they can’t say they haven’t controlled their own fate. AXA is the kind of team that can win any game and also lose any game at any time.
(+1) HON
3-1 Flying in under the radar as usual are the HONEY BADGERS. They’re the grit & grind team of D1, which doesn’t produce intimidating #s, but always works well in the playoffs. Don’t sleep on the Badgers.
(-4) CRV
1-3 Player availability hasn’t helped the CRAFTY VETS so far this season, but that’s something they knew going in. At full strength, they’re still the best team in D1. If CRV can just make the playoffs and get key players playoff eligible, they will be the team to beat.
(+2) UNN
1-2 UNITED NATIONS has looked a bit uneven this season, but a win vs a short-handed CRV and a strong outing in a loss to 808 seems to indicate that they may be back on track. With no player scoring more than 11.3 ppg, they may need some help offensively to really make a move.
(-1) SED
1-3 They’ve lost no game by more than 6 points, so SHUT ‘EM DOWN has had a chance to win in every game they’ve played. Closing out has been an issue. But if they can figure that out, they have plenty of pieces to here to make a strong playoff push in the back nine.
(-1) YOL
0-4 YOLO is in a similar situation to SED, they’ve been right there in most games. They’re not out of it yet, but next week’s game vs UNN is a must-win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) DPY
3-0 Last season’s defending champs haven’t lost yet, so DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF will hold serve at #1. (G) Emery Clark and (F) Tyler McFarlane have carried the load offensively. (G) Kali Pearson hasn’t shot well so far, but he is racking up the hustle stats.
(=) NGC
3-0 Last season’s finalists, NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE, hasn’t missed a beat either and they looked focused on reclaiming their title. (F) Mark Lee‘s resurgence on offense has been the story so far, but (G) David Chu has been as steady as ever.
(+4) GMM
2-1 Veteran (G) Tommy Wong seems to have found the stroke again, which is great news for GUARD ME MAYBE who needs his range to open up the paint for GMM’s plethora of forwards. With some new key faces on the roster GMM might be poised for a return trip to the chip.
(+4) SKL
2-2 SKILLSHARE started with a narrow loss to DPY, then a close one to GMM. Since then, they’ve been thumping opponents, and (F) Russ Braithwaite has been a major key. With SKL struggling to convert from the 3FG, the more they can score inside the line, the better.
(+1)
MLG
2-2 Newbies MLGB have shown promise at 2-2. But they could just as easily have been 3-1 as 1-3. Surely they’ll take it. Last night’s 3-pointer to beat JAM at the buzzer may be the turning point. They play games close and so far have given themselves a chance to win every night.
(-3) HAR
1-2 TEAM HARDWOOD is still right the thick of things. A win over PRE is promising despite the loss to SKL. They’ll face a tough stretch ahead with DPY and GMM on the schedule, but if they can steal a win there, they can finish strong in the back 2 games of the season to lock up a playoff spot.
(-3) PRE
1-2 They’ve been a fun team to watch, but PREMATURE SHOOTERS may be on the verge of flipping the switch. Chalk up early losses to a new team figuring it out, this roster has the personnel to challenge for 4/5 seed.
(-3) JAM
1-3 SPACE JAM dropped a heart-breaker to MLG last night. More than the fact that they had it in the bag, they needed that win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Next week’s game vs PRE is a must-win. Then comes their toughest part of the season, GMM, then NGC. Tough road ahead.
(=) ROT 0-3 Truth is, DA ROTI PROJECT isn’t out of it yet. They basically have to win all but the NGC game to give themselves a chance. But they’ll have to check that first franchise win off the to-do list first.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1)
NET
4-0 NASTY NETS (F) Matt Silberman is playing MVP ball right now. His 22.3 ppg is 2nd in D3, and his 9 rpg and 2.5 spg shows his impact on defense as well. But the player that puts them above the rest is floor leader (G) Dan Gogerty, an MVP candidate in his own right.
(+5)
COB
2-0 As expected (G) Tony Cuadrado has been a monster for COBRA KAI, particularly on the defensive end. The 16.5 spg so far is stupid. And partial thanks for that goes to the low-key return of (G) Steven Chen, who has always been a defensive force.
(=) FNL
3-1 The win over AIR is nice, but they were blown out by the only team they played against in the top half (COB), so despite the surprising 3-1 record, the jury is still out on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTZ.
(=) SPR
2-1 SPAGHETTI RAMEN will always be right there. Don’t sleep because of all the new faces out here. Until they’re actually eliminated, they’re the team you put your money on. (G) Leuis Ng with another MVP caliber season. Business as usual here.
(=) NGC 1-1 The veteran NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is the dark horse, wild card, whatever you want to call it. They have the most dominant big man in D3 with (C) Victor Chia. And solid vets all around him.
(=) DYN 2-1 It’s crazy that NY DYNASTY is at #6 after back-to-back title games, a testament to how good D3 is this season. Partly due to a revolving door of PGs, which makes a difference in identity for DYN, but like SPR, sleep at your own risk. There’s no scorer in D3 like (G) David Chu.
(-6) AIR
2-1 The early blowout wins were nice, but the loss to FNL revealed that maybe the AIRBALLERS needed re-ranking. Still, (F) Albert Hei is having a great season, and they have the most mobile perimeter D outside of COB. They can move back up if they use it.
(=)
SNB
1-2 SMASH N BOUNCE is still a playoff team with their propensity for defense and (F) Nathan Kan‘s offense can give them a chance to upset someone in the first round. If they can advance beyond that is unclear.
(+1)
MON
0-3 The MONSTARS are still in the playoff hunt, and they will now enter the most vital part of their schedule, facing HAN, MYP, CMU, all teams that are vying for the 9th and last playoff spot. If they win these games, they will be in the driver’s seat for a post-season bid.
10 (-1) HAN
1-3 By getting a crucial win, HANDEL ARCHITECTS are still alive and well in the playoff hunt. If they can win 2 out of their last 3, they can give themselves a chance. Win out, and they’re guaranteed a bid.
11 (=) MYP 1-3 MYPC is in a similar position to HAN, but they’re down a loss to HAN. Like all teams in the bottom 4, they need more scoring. If they can pull out wins over MON and SNB, they have a shot at breaking into that 8-9 seed, or at least sending it to a tie-breaker.
12 (=) CMU 0-3 CMU BALLERS are in a tough spot, but not mathematically out of yet. Beat SNB, HAN, and MON, and they can still make it. But of all the teams that need a boost on offense, this is the one that needs it most.

Sum ’17 Week 3 Power Rankings (All Sunday Divisions)

2ND DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a)
TEA
1-0 Defending champions TEAL CURTAIN started the summer with a big statement win, posting a 32-pt margin of victory in their opener. It looks like the same roster, they have plenty of size and versatility, and they won it all last season without (F/C) Noah Scovronick.
(n/a) NFZ 1-0 Apparently, the Sex Panthers dynasty is no more, but two key players have now joined NO FLY ZONE. (G) David Chu & (G) Jon Jackson join a restructured NFZ roster that attempted 43 3FGs in their season opener. Offensive records may get shattered this season.
(n/a) BOM
1-0 BOMB SQUAD captain (F) Sherwin Salar is out this season, but interim cap (G) Alex Tsay has brought in (C) Manu Menon, who is now the biggest player in D2. There will be some new faces filling out the roster this season, but this team should contend.
(n/a) SKW 1-1 SK WAR DOG brings a down-sized roster to D2 this season so you can count on a lot of 3FGs. They have attempted 58 in two games and that’s before (G) Felix Shen has even joined the roster. If (G) Kash Miah also joins the team, look out below.
(n/a) RAR 0-1 They nobly held out for a few seasons, but RAINING ROSEBUDS are finally going D2. They have shooters, and able scorers (G) Miguel Melbourne and (G) Anthony Williams/(G) Joseph Jaffee. Not sure which backcourt mate it will be, but either will do very well in D2.
(n/a) ROV 1-1 RICE IN OUR VEINS started with a solid win over TAP NY but took a big if short-handed loss from TEA in Week 2. This roster has plenty of scoring, but they will have to pick up the defense to really compete for the title in a stacked summer season.
(n/a) TAP 0-2 TAP NY typically has their best seasons in the summer, but this season they face a stacked D2 field and a some new faces on the roster. (G) Will Chu and (G) John Hsu will shoulder a heavy load this season, but they have certainly done that before.

3RD DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) NFZ
2-0 The defending champion, NO FLY ZONE, have come out to a solid, if not particularly impressive start. But they have found ways to win, and that’s what championship teams do. They will have players in and out of the lineup this summer, so starting 2-0 was a major key.
(n/a) JPU
2-0 After an unsuccessful D2 stint, JAPAN UNITED returns to D3 playing as well as ever. No (F) Daniel Mosley but (G) Osamu Tanigawa, (G) Ryota Takahashi and (F) Marc Lashly have picked up the slack so far. JPU will be a contender to reclaim their title.
(n/a) NFU
2-0 NY FALCONS U. are back and they bring with them the same young, energetic roster led by (F) Jeff Zheng and (C) George Casale. They will compete in every game, but the trick be how they close out games down the stretch against veteran teams. So far, so good.
(n/a) STR
1-2 STREET DREAMS could easily be 2-1. (G) Miguel Melbourne is playing MVP caliber ball again, leading D3 with 27 ppg in 3 games. New addition (G) Jason Lin has also been solid. It’s early in the season and STR has played only Top 5 teams, the record should improve.
(n/a)
LAR
1-2 LARRY THE CABLE GUY’S KIDS (G) Eddie Tsao has been solid, scoring 18 ppg in 3 gms, but no one else on the roster is scoring more 6 ppg. Not that Tsao shoots much, just 10.7 attempts per. LAR just seem a bit off on offense. If they get it together, they should contend.
(n/a) TED
1-1 At 1-1, newbie TED TALKS, has had a solid start. They will face JPU this week, and we’ll see if they can really join the list of contenders this summer. Lot of new faces, should be a fun team to watch grow.
(n/a) GOO
0-2 GOON SQUAD has a couple of new faces that add good energy, but their woes have always been on the offensive end. Consistent shooting just hasn’t been there. GOO attempts a league-high 28 3-pt attempts per game despite making just 20%. That may have to change.
(n/a) BIL 0-2 BALL IS LIFE has also struggled offensively over their two seasons in D3. (F) Sean He is about as good as they come in D3, but he needs some more offensive support for BIL to really make a move.

Sum ’17 Week 2 Power Rankings (All Divisions)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a)
CRV
0-1 The CRAFTY VETS didn’t so much lose their opener as gave it away by getting complacent (or tired). Fellow 20-ppg scorer (F) Daryl Blank wasn’t in the lineup either. But this could be a good L for the defending champs as it should fire them up for the rest of the season.
(n/a) 808 2-0 Formerly JLA, 808s & FASTBREAKS has some new faces, namely rookie (G) Aaron Smith, who has been an immediate problem for opposing defenses. His game-changing D and ability to create off the dribble is exactly what 808 needed to get them to the next level.
(n/a) AXA
1-1 For a collection of veteran players, AXA-RODD hasn’t always made the best decisions down the stretch, but they did get a win over last season’s undefeated (except for one forfeit loss) champion, CRV. That’s enough to get them a Top 3 ranking (for now).
(n/a) DYN 0-0 The designated free agent team, NY DYNASTY, hasn’t played a game yet but the roster is fully-loaded. Multi-time MVP (F) Michael Reding from D1 Sun’s NFZ and former MVP (F) Will Haile get top billing for a deep team with size, length and great shooting.
(n/a) HON 1-1 The HONEY BADGERS have been to the championship game twice in back-to-back seasons, so expect them to make another run at the title again this season. (G) Jeff Syham and (G) Mike Bill were great adds last season, giving HON great depth at the guard pos.
(n/a) BLH 1-0 BRONX-LEBANON HC has been on hiatus since their championship a couple of years ago, but they’re back with a smaller team to take on the D1 title. (G) Courteney Tabron has long been one of the league’s best scorers and will vie for the scoring title again this season.
(n/a) YOL 0-1 YOLO flew mostly under the radar last season, but the same core is back led by versatile (F) Mark Promax and (G/F) Warren Green who returns after a solid rookie season. YOL saw four double-digit scorers last season so this is a team with a fairly balanced attack.
(n/a) UNN 0-1 UNITED NATIONS did not look strong in their opener with no player on the roster reaching double-digits in an 18-pt loss. (F) Jack Latta and (F) Isaac Ranitzer are the familiar faces on this roster, but you wouldn’t have recognized them from their opener. Only way is up.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) DPY
2-0 Defending champs DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF are undefeated so far and remain the team to beat until proven otherwise. (G) Emery Clark and (F) Tyler McFarlane are having big seasons so far, both putting up MVP caliber numbers right now.
(n/a) NGC
2-0 Just a season removed from a championship, and having narrowly lost one last season, NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is again a top contender for the crown this summer. (G) David Chu is still one of the league’s best scorers, but the key may be (G) Mark Lee‘s improved play so far.
(n/a) HAR
1-1 Will this be the season TEAM HARDWOOD makes the leap? (G) Justin Rigney is one of the best versatile guards in D2, and (F) Pierre Riddle is as great an intangibles player as you can find. The key for HAR will be consistency, they have the personnel they need.
(n/a) PRE
1-1 Two seasons ago, a different iteration of PREMATURE SHOOTERS led by (F) Dan Kennelly and (F) Allen Granowski made it to the chip only to fall just short of winning it all. They return with some new faces, but this is still one of the division’s biggest lineups.
(n/a)
JAM
1-1 Speaking of which, SPACE JAM pretty much always has D2’s biggest front-line with (C) Brent Clayton, (C) Kevin Sampson & (F) Justin Hnatow in the paint. The key to JAM’s success, however, is their 3-pt shooting. If they can shoot better than 35%, they’ll win a lot of games.
(n/a) MLG
1-1 MLGB are the new kids on the block. They have a deep roster with some observable talent on it, but no player so far is scoring better than 9.5 ppg. That’s not gonna cut it in D2. Someone will have to step up provide a consistent source of points for MLG to win anymore games.
(n/a) GMM
1-1 After a dismal opener, GUARD ME MAYBE bounced back with a big win over SKL with a full roster. There are some new faces on the roster including (G) Sean Park, who scored 17 pts in his first game. But GMM will only win as many games as (F) Brian Law is available.
(n/a) SKL 0-2 Not a good start for SKILLSHARE but there have been key players out of the lineup. Either way, (G) Elliott Curtis needs to break out of this shooting slump to get SKL back into contender status. As a team, SKL is shooting just 30% from the field after two losses.
(n/a) ROT 0-1 DA ROTI PROJECT has yet to win a game as a franchise, but they’re hoping this will be the season. (G) Jonathan Brown is dynamic enough a player to carry the load, but he may need to exercise more patience with his team. They need to gel to win.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a)
CFM
2-0 They haven’t played a top half team yet, but C.F.M.A.C. is winning by an average margin of  32.5 ppg right now. (F) Albert Hei joins (F) Neil Dumadag and (G) Derrick Shich for a team that can get up and down the court, scoring the bulk of their points in transition.
(n/a)
NET
2-0 The NASTY NETS already had a solid scoring option in (F) Matt Silberman but (G) Derrick Beresford and (G) Dan Gogerty are new additions that are perhaps slumming it. They’re obviously better than D3, but winning a D3 chip will take the whole team getting onboard. Beatin ght edefending champs already is a good start.
(n/a) FNL
2-0 If you look at their team stats, nothing really stands out, but after two games, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTZ is winning as impressively as the two teams above them. Scorer (G) Steve Shin is the captain and despite a 10-pt opener, he could challenge for the scoring title.
(n/a) SPR
0-1 Despite the loss, the defending champion SPAGHETTI RAMEN will be the favorite to return to the chip. As a matter of fact, they’ve never finished undefeated en route to a title.
(n/a) NGC 1-0 NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE had maybe D3’s most imposing lineup last season, but it just didn’t quite translate to a championship. (C) Vic Chia is D3’s most dominant big man, and if they can get another good season out of (F) Steven Chung, they can win it all.
(n/a) DYN 0-1 After a return trip to the title game last season, the NY DYNASTY upgraded significantly on offense adding (G) Ian Yu, (F) Chris Seerveld and (C) Steve Song. But they lost two of the best all-time defenders in D3 in the trade-off. They’ll need time to adjust.
(n/a) COB 0-0 They haven’t played a game yet, but COBRA KAI is a loaded veteran roster with (G) Eden Chuang, (F) Carson Yiu and (C) Jason Chan as the core. And now, they’ll get (G) Tony Cuadrado for a full season. And that should have them moving up quickly.
(n/a) SNB 1-1 Oddly enough, SMASH N BOUNCE was known for their defense last season. That seems to have gone by the wayside, but new add (F) Nathan Kan gives them a scorer that could keep up this offensive pace. The defensive personnel is still there if they need it.
(n/a) MYP 1-1 After an impressive opening night win, MYPC took a big loss from CFM in Week 2. Looking at their team stats, it looks like MYP needs a consistent scorer. No one is averaging over 9 ppg after two games. It will be tough to grind out wins with such limited offense.
10 (n/a) MON 0-1 The MONSTARS are making some personnel changes after their opening loss, and their top 3 scorers will be replaced. So, lots of new faces in the mix. We’ll have to wait to see how it goes.
11 (n/a) HAN 0-2 HANDEL ARCHITECTS have a couple of exciting players on the roster, but they need offensive help. They’re averaging just 31.5 ppg and that just won’t be enough to win, even in D3.
12 (n/a) CMU 0-2 Despite the two losses, CMU BALLERS have time to turn it around, but like HAN, they need help on offense. With a league-low 28 ppg, it’s just impossible to win while scoring at that rate.
