TDL Winter 2017 Week 2 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

PREMIER DIVISION

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
MWW
2-0 Out this season are former MVP (F) Chaz Thomas & gunner (F) Nick Annacone, but Metta World War still has another former MVP in (G) Shamel Arasmo and some solid new adds. They’re the favorites until proven otherwise.
(N/A) SIX 2-0 Perennial contenders now, Team Six won in Sum ’16 but lost in the title game to MWW last season. The roster has new faces but noticeably missing in the first 2 games is All-TDL 1st Team (G) Scott Weisfeld.
(N/A) DYN 1-0 There are new faces on the NY Dynasty including Best Newcomer candidate 6-6 (F) Ian McBride. But they will get their first test this week facing defending champions MWW.
(N/A) WHG 1-1 Basically the same roster as last season, We Had Game (G) Michael Springer is already in mid-season form. WHG looks like a playoff team and will make a move to unseat a top seed this season.
(N/A) FKA 0-1 Capt (G) Mike Salerno brings in F.K.A.L.Js with a couple of gunners in (G) Tom Killiam and (G) David Kalerna. They narrowly lost to MWW in the season opener despite playing short-handed. This team could very well shake up the league’s power structure very quickly.
(N/A) COL 0-2 Team Coliseum is another new team led by (G) Landon Glover who is nearly avg 20 & 10 right now. There are a number of newcomers to TDL on this roster. Don’t count them out yet despite the 0-2 start.
(N/A) GMM 0-2 This isn’t unfamiliar territory for Guard Me Maybe, they don’t always start strong. But the goal is always to make the playoffs and find a way into the chip. They’ve done it before, more than once. New (G) Donnell Mitchell can be force if he can find his fit in the lineup.

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
HON
2-0 The Honey Badgers will never finish a game with a lack of effort. This is perennially the hardest working team in D1 and now they have some added paint presence with 6-5 (C) Kanem Johnson.
(N/A) ASN 1-0 The Asphalt Ninjas are back with some changes in their personnel, but big man 6-6 (C) Rigo Sargeant is is still the cornerstone. The addition of (G) Kev Chang may prove to be the difference this season as his 29 points in the opener seems to indicate.
(N/A) SPA 1-0 One of TDL’s oldest franchises, the NYK Spartans are finally making the move down to D1 from Premier. This is an aging team that still has a ton of talent. 6-7 (C) Jin Hong is the intimidating presence, but it’s 6-3 (F) Young Song you have to key on. He scored 38 pts SPA’s opener.
(N/A) TOP 0-1 The defending champs were in last place when the playoffs started last season, and they turned it into a championship run. Top Stars won’t have the luxury of all teams making the post-season this time, but if they make it (which they should), they have all the pieces to repeat.
(N/A) JLA 1-0 After dominating D2 last season, Justice League makes the move up to D1. They have plenty of guard depth, but if JLA is going to survive in D1 they will need some help in the paint soon.
(N/A) OPA 0-2 Newbies Option A have some great pieces. And now (C) Pablo Salcedo gives them even more depth in the paint in a twin towers combo with (F) Haris Ahmed. If they develop their chemistry over the course of the season, this could be a team that unseats some top teams.
(N/A) ALL 0-2 All Net is also a new team in D1, but like OPA, they’ve had a rough start. Still, this is a veteran team with great size. (F) Jerrell Lawrence is already one of the league’s most versatile players. If they can get their perimeter shots falling, they can make a move.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
NGC
1-0 NYC Gritty Committee loses no one from last season’s playoff roster but they’ve added scorer (G) David Chu. Remains to be seen if there’s enough basketball to go around, but their opening win was a good start.
(N/A) NYR 2-0 The young NY Rockits look good. They are undersized but fast, and they play with more energy than any other team in D2 WN, which is mostly comprised of veteran teams.
(N/A) DYN 1-0 Last season, NY Dynasty went younger and won their first D2 title. This season they’ve gone back to a veteran roster, likely the oldest in the entire league over all divisions. (G) Ren Hsieh will helm along with (G) Andrew Chen and (C) Len Kamdang returning to the court.
(N/A) GMM 0-2 Two losses is not the way last season’s finalists, Guard Me Maybe, wanted to start, but they haven’t had their best player in the lineup, the very imposing (F) Brian Law. With him, this is a contender again.
(N/A) DPY 1-1 Don’t Ever Play Yourself got their first win out of the way early this season, which is good, but a blowout loss to DYN is the only thing that held them out of a Top 4 ranking. But they can get there with their new additions. DPY’s guard play has significantly improved.
(N/A) JAM 0-2 Space Jam is another veteran team, which as we all know is really a euphemism for old. JAM has solid pieces and great size. They can and enjoy shooting the 3. The shot just hasn’t been falling, thus an 0-2 start.
(N/A) JUN 0-0 The Junkies will be playing their first game in Week 3, so they get the default lowest ranking for now. Their roster, however, does boast some good size including 6-4 (F) Allen Granowski.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
SPR
2-0 It took all of two weeks for Spaghetti Ramen to unseat SKL for the #1 seed. Last season, the 4X D3 champions, lost the title game to SKL, but played without multi-time MVP (G) Leuis Ng. He was back for this one, and Ramen won a goodie. We can’t wait for the rematch.
(N/A) SKL 1-1 On paper, Skillshare is the most stacked team in D3, and after last season’s title, they may be on a verge to move up to D2. Especially with (F) Scott Sullivan playing this well. But as their Week 2 loss to SPR can attest, they’re not invincible. But they’re certainly contenders again.
(N/A) DYN 1-0 After a surprise playoff run last season, the NY Dynasty has added a few upgrades in big time scorer (G) David Chu and veteran (F) Drew Deleon, who will bolster their presence in the paint.
(N/A) NYE 1-1 NYCE is a tricky team to gauge. They’re the biggest team in D3 as far as avg size across the roster. (F) DaVaughn Cunningham will dominate, but their guard play is inconsistent, and it can lose them games.
(N/A) 30F 1-0 30-for-30 played one game, they have one win. Good start, but they mustered just 35 pts in the process. (F) Adam Wang and (C) Ezekial Kim are back, but this team is gonna need more offense to move up.
(N/A) GOZ 0-2 Captain (C) Karl Ngok brings in a new team with Game of Zones with some new faces. Leading the way is Ngok, (G) Jin Yu & (F) Albert Hei. They play with good energy, but need a big boost on offense.
(N/A) LG3 0-2 With a roster completely new to TDL, LG for 3 are the new kids on the block. We’re not sure if we’ve seen the entire roster yet, but it’s a long season, we’ll see if they can turn it around.

TDL Fall 2016 Championship Preview (D3 Sun)

(2) SPAGHETTI RAMEN vs (4) JAPAN UNITED

Championship – Sunday (11/20) 2:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Well, here we are again. Spaghetti Ramen is in rare territory, looking to win their 4th straight D3 title, a feat only accomplished by one other team, NYC Skyline, which won 5 in D1. They will miss the dominant defensive presence of (F) Mark Hahn but players have stepped up offensively. Their late season and playoff run leaves no doubt who is favored to win it again.
SPR
5-2

58-55

JPU
4-4
This is uncharted waters for Japan United, their first ever title game. And it should be no surprise that this their most talented team ever, if not necessarily the biggest. But that won’t hurt them vs SPR, who also plays small ball. If the JPU front-court (F) Daniel Mosley and (F) Marc Lashly can dominate the paint with their physical play, United has real chance to pull of the upset.
Key Player: Leuis Ng

There is no more important player on the floor than Ng. He simply never fails to bring his A game. In the biggest games, Ng comes up with his biggest performances. He has never not won a championship MVP at the D3 level.

X-Factor: Matt Auerbach

Auerbach didn’t post big #s, but he is SPR’s most consistent rebounder, a great passer from the (F) spot, and sneaky good in the passing lanes. If he’s hitting the jumper today, SPR can’t lose.

Key Player: Daniel Mosley

As mentioned, JPU’s advantage lies in their physical duo of forwards who can finish in and around the paint. If Mosley is also hitting his jumper, United will be a tough out. If JPU wants to take out the champs he’ll have to outplay Ng.

X-Factor: Marc Lashly

Lashly will be the biggest player on the floor, and like Mosley he can create his own shot in and around the basket. The key will be getting him enough touches. He is also JPU’s best front-court defender.

TDL Fall 2016 Semifinals Playoff Preview (D3 WN)

(1) SKILLSHARE vs (5) NY DYNASTY

Semifinals – Thursday (11/17) 7:00pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Skillshare was by far the best team in D3 this season despite putting up stats less gaudy then in previous campaigns. But in their 3rd season now, the team looks comfortable and battle-tested. They have great chemistry and everyone seems to know how they can best help the team win. If this keeps up, the road to the title will go through them.
SKL
5-1

62-55

DYN
3-4
Their reg season match-up with SKL was blowout loss. NY Dynasty just doesn’t have the size to match-up with SKL, so they’re forced to play zone. With that, if SKL is hitting their jumpers, it’s going to be a long night. But this is also playoff DYN, in which they tend to play up with (G) Ren Hsieh at the helm. He will give them a chance to win.
Key Player: Scott Sullivan

SKL’s leader is (G) Elliott Curtis, but Sullivan puts them on another level. He has the size and versatility at his position that no one else in D3 has. When he’s wreaking havoc in the paint and on the offensive glass, AND making jumpers, SKL is nearly unbeatable.

Key Player: Steve Shin

Shin has been DYN’s bonafide scorer all season, but his shot selection had been questionable at times. But in the 1st rd win vs UBC, that changed. He had his best game of the season even if it wasn’t his highest scoring. If keeps it up, DYN might have a shot.

(2) 30 FOR 30 vs (3) JUST RISE

Semifinals – Thursday (11/17) 7:00pm at Murry Bergtraum HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
30-for-30 doesn’t exactly pass the eye test, their strength is in their intangibles. Yes, they have the most dominant rebounder in D3 in (C) Ezekial Kim, and one of the most versatile players in (F) Adam Wang, but everyone else on the roster can be characterized by a unified, all-out effort. And don’t sleep on (G) Peter Kim who tends to lay low, but is one of the craftiest PGs in D3.
30F
6-1

55-58

RIS
5-2
If you want to talk about not passing the eye test and intangibles, Just Rise pretty much invented it. There is a reason RIS, a slightly modified Spaghetti Ramen, has never played a D3 season without winning it all. They have all 30F has, and the best player on the floor in multi-time MVP (G) Leuis Ng. And for that, plus 30F’s relative inexperience in the playoffs, they are the favorites.
Key Player: Adam Wang

Wang has been 30F’s best shooter and most consistent 3-pt threat all season. And he has a knack of making them in clutch situations. This is a team that spread the ball well, but inevitably, this will become a game of limited possessions at the end and Wang will have to step up and lead.

Pos: F
14.3 ppg

Pos: G

Key Player: Leuis Ng

Who’d you think it would be? Ng can completely take over a game, and probably will. Double-teaming him doesn’t work, he’s a great passer and facilitator. The trick might be limiting his teammates, particularly (F) Matt Auerbach, who’s had as good a season as he’s ever had.
