TDL Winter 2017 Championship Preview (D1 Sun)

(1) YUNG NO FLY ZONE vs (6) SHAWN KEMP’S KIDS

D1 Sun Championship – Sunday, April 9, 2:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
For whatever reason, YUNG NO FLY ZONE has always struggled to defend SKK, but they have still tended to win. This wasn’t NFZ’s most impressive season in terms of dominant wins, but they are more balanced than ever before both on offense and D, and here they are back in the title game to redeem themselves for last season’s narrow loss to DOR.
NFZ
7-1

61-55

SKK
5-4
SHAWN KEMP’S KIDS barely got into the playoffs, but they’ve been red hot since then. With four players scoring in double-digits, they’ve been getting balanced scoring, and they’re shooting well from the 3. Which is a weapon they have used well vs NFZ in the past. If they’re shooting well again in this game, they have more than a real chance of pulling off this upset.
Key Player: Michael Reding

For a multi-time D1 MVP, this has not been Reding’s sharpest season offensively, but he has taken on a bigger role as NFZ’s most versatile defender. He will probably defend 1-5  today.

Pos: F

Key Player: Dan Linnane

Linnane has always been a streaky player for SKK, but this has been his most consistent season as far as just flat out attendance goes. And he has been red hot in the playoffs with a versatile offensive attack.

X-Factor: Phil Thomas

Like Reding, Thomas is a versatile defender, but he’s a better option on offense for NFZ. He may be the one player that SKK has no real match-up for.

Pos: G

The diminutive Walsh has always been NFZ’s kryptonite. He can rise up over NFZ’s smaller defenders on the jumper, and finish tough shots in the paint with NFZ’s limited size.

TDL Winter 2017 Playoff Previews (D2, D3 Sun)

(1) STREET DREAMS vs (4) POGI POINTS

D3 Sun  Playoffs (Semifinals) – Sunday, April 1, 1:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
STREET DREAMS have been the most dominant team in D3, but POG exposed some weaknesses in their reg season match-up. Paint defense. POG is the bigger team, and they attack the paint relentlessly. STR got the win anyway on MVP (G) Miguel Melbourne‘s best game (33 pts, 7 stl). He can certainly do that again, but POG sure made it interesting.
STR
8-0

56-54

POG
5-3
As mentioned, POGI POINTS has the bigger line-up. And they took advantage of their size during the regular season match-up. What they struggled to do was match-up with Melbourne. And never figured out a way to effectively double him, but it’s a deep roster so they have plenty of guys to throw at him. Oh, and (F) Jin Bae Kim missed the first game.
Key Player: Miguel Melbourne

Powerful and quick, Mebourne has proven to be the toughest match-up in D3 all season. He dominated POG on both ends of the court in the reg season. If he can replicate that night, POG will have no answer.

4.7 rpg
3.9 apg

Pos: G/F
15.6 ppg

4.2 apg
Key Player: Jin Bae Kim

Like Melbourne, Kim is POG’s best playmaker and defensive player. But POG has an even better scorer on the roster. Which may let Kim focus on stopping Melbourne. His length and speed might be the antidote.

(2) JAPAN UNITED vs (6) THE PANDAS

D3 Sun  Playoffs (Semifinals) – Sunday, April 1, 2:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
JAPAN UNITED are the deepest team in D3, with a wealth of options they can go to on offense. They are generally undersized, but not vs PAN. Half-court D isn’t a strength, but they play opportunistically, and try to force turnovers so they can use their speed in transition. (G) Ryota Takahashi and (G) Osamu Tanigawa are faster than most.
JPU
7-1

60-53

PAN
4-4
THE PANDAS have speed, too, but it’s a one-man fast break, (G) Eddie Tsao. If Tsao is on, he’s a problem for the smaller JPU back court. (F) Ben Wang, at point forward, is also bigger than virtually any player on JPU’s roster, but PAN is overall not a big team. The key will be how Tsao and Wang use advantages to create for themselves and the team.
Key Player: Daniel Mosley

Mosley brings a physicality to JPU that the majority of the roster does not have. He is their best half-court scorer and rebounder. He can be bothered by length on defense, but he will never stop attacking.

Pos: F

10.9 rpg
1.9 apg

Pos: G
16.7 ppg
5.5 rpg
2.8 apg
Key Player: Eddie Tsao

This was not Tsao’s best season, but he was still one of D3’s top guards. He will be JPU’s toughest match-up so it’s important that the Pandas work to get him involved early. He can carry the offense in this one.

(1) BOMB SQUAD vs (4) GRITTY FOB CITY

D2 Sun  Playoffs (Semifinals) – Sunday, April 1, 3:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
The defending champion BOMB SQUAD have dominated with the deepest roster in D2. They have coupled the division’s 2nd highest scoring offense with one of its top defenses. This is a tough, physical team that will make you earn every point. Their one weaknesss may be late game decision-making, but so far, not many teams have forced them to make crunch time plays.
BOM
7-1

58-52

FOB
6-2
It’s hard to understate just how much better (F) Chris Youn makes FOB CITY. But he was only filling in for veteran (G) Ace Watanasuparp. With their PG back at the helm, FOB didn’t see much of a drop off, riding an impressive victory into the semis. This is a big, physical team, one of the few that can match-up with BOM on the scales. This one could very much end up a slug-fest.
Key Player: David Hsiung

The veteran swingman has had a career season on offense. His shooting has been efficient with a penchant for back breakers. He is BOM’s best perimeter defender, not so much with steals as solid straight-up D.

Pos: G

Key Player: Ace Watanasuparp

After missing several regular season games, Watanasuparp returned with a strong outing to help propel FOB into the semis. They will need another game like this, and more help from the wings to beat BOM. And that’s as much on defense as offense.

(2) NO FLY ZONE OG vs (3) SEX PANTHERS

D2 Sun  Playoffs (Semifinals) – Sunday, April 1, 4:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
During the regular season, NO FLY ZONE OG was in the midst of a blowout win vs SXP when they were exposed for a little weakness. Their undersized (G)s struggle to defend SXP’s taller perimeter scorers. The Panthers almost came back and won that game. This is a team that has plenty of offense, bench play, and closing out on D will be the key.
NFZ
6-2

64-63

SXP
6-2
The SEX PANTHERS carry the deepest back court in D2, plus the best scoring tandem in (G) David Chu & (G) Greg Loeffert, both are MVP candidates. Then they have yet another MVP candidate in (F) Chris Di, who carried them through the early part of the season. Trouble is, Di has been out of the lineup for a long time. He’ll need to mesh now.
Key Player: Phil Thomas

He’s the best athlete in D2, and now he’s starting to show it as much on defense as offense. His casual demeanor might not work on every team, but NFZ has been a great fit for his freelancing style of play.

There is one player on this roster you absolutely cannot afford to let go off, and that’s Chu. Which is a whole lot easier said than done when his SXP teammates spend basically the whole game trying to get him the ball.

TDL Winter 2017 Championship Preview (Premier, D3)

(2) SKILLSHARE vs (5) NY DYNASTY

D3 WN Championship – Thursday, March 30, 7:30pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Defending champs SKILLSHARE are back in the chip. And so long as they didn’t have to face SPR before now, it seemed like an inevitability. (G) Elliott Curtis and (F) Scott Sullivan will put up big #s, and (C) Anthony Hull is easily the biggest player on the floor, and (G) Mike Hamane will lead SKL’s physical D. DYN won’t have the size or depth to match-up with SKL, but to close them out, SKL will have to make sure they don’t hot from three.
SKL
5-3

62-58

DYN
5-4
Skillshare may have two of the Top 5 players in the league this season, but the NY DYNASTY might have two more. (G) Ren Hsieh & (G) David Chu are arguably the best back court in D3. And in the playoffs, they are scoring a combined 46 ppg on 52% FGs, incl 58% from 3. Veteran role players are key for DYN. When everyone is on the same page, and the shots are falling, this is a very tough team to beat in single-elim.
Key Player: Scott Sullivan

There are really no other players in this division that have Sullivan’s combination of size, physicality and mobility. He is a relentless attacker on offense and on the glass. If DYN can’t stay in front of him, he will dismantle their D, one that’s not great a foot speed to begin with.

Pos: F
23.0 ppg
7.0 rpg
2.0 apg

Pos: G
28.0 ppg

Key Player: David Chu

At the D3 level, you can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him. It helps that his team does everything it can to get him as many touches as he needs to get it going. Chu is, however, nursing a back injury, so it will be interesting to see how that affect his range.

X-Factor: Michael Hamane

Starting PG Elliott Curtis will get his, but the x-factor for SKL is Hamane. Very capable of putting up a 20-pt game, if his 3-pointer is falling, then DYN is in for a long-time night. They can shift their D to guard Curtis and Sullivan, maybe Hull, but Hamane, too? That’s too much for any team.

Pos: F
21.5 ppg
5.0 rpg
3.5 apg

Pos: F
9.0 ppg
5.5 rpg

X-Factor: Brian Yang

In their first match-up with SKL, the veteran Yang gave DYN some much needed points in the paint with crafty moves and some tough finishes around the rim. He is an undersized post player, but his heady play will be a major factor in whether or not DYN can pull off this upset.

(3) F.K.A.L.J.S vs (4) TEAM SIX

Premier Championship – Thursday, March 30, 8:45pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
You’d have to say it’s destiny at this point. F.K.A.L.J.S capt (G) Mike Salerno once helmed for their opponent Team Six until he left the team unceremoniously before they won their first title. This FKA team is the new girlfriend, so to speak, and they are fully loaded. (F) Tom Killiam and (G) David Kalema are as lethal a duo as any in this division, and they’re surrounded by shooters. FKA’s been the best team in Premier for the past month.
FKA
6-3

65-62

SIX
6-3
It wasn’t there strongest reg season, but TEAM SIX just needed to make the playoffs. They know what it takes to get back to the title game, this is their third straight appearance. (G) Brett Swanson found the range in the Rd 1 to help them get past WHG. (G) BJ Davis used his speed to help SIX beat reigning champs MWW in the semis. It’s been a team effort all season with players stepping up just when SIX needs them most. No reason that should change now.
Key Player: Tom Killiam

We’ve reviewed Killiam ad nauseum at this point: athletic and he’ll score. Try to stop him, good luck. But don’t sleep on Kalema, who is crafty in the paint. He won’t beat you with the Killiams’ athleticism, but he finds a way to get into the paint to score.

Pos: G

Key Player: B.J. Davis

The rookie Davis showed off his speed in their semifinal win over MWW in a way we hadn’t really seen all season. But if he’s found niche in the rotation now, it’s great timing. He will be the fastest player on the floor and SIX will need him.

X-Factor: Mike Holsey

When available, Holsey is the paint defender that ties the whole team together. The other FKA forwards are big, and rebound well, but aren’t fast. Holsey makes up for that by challenging everything at the rim.

Pos: C
4.8 ppg

1.8 bpg

Pos: G
10.2 ppg

X-Factor: Brent Swanson

Swanson is a heady veteran player who will always make a contribution whether he’s hitting his jumper or not, but man, when that 3-pointer is falling, it falls in waves. If Swanson is hot, this one’s a barn-burner.
