TDL Summer 2016 Week 3 Results [D1]
RECAP: Not yet available. |
RECAP: Sometimes, especially in a game won like this, the whole story can be told in the box score. And in this case, the headliner is the 61-22 advantage on the glass, SK War Dog simply dominated a short-handed Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out in the paint. SKW (F) Michael Campbell has been quiet this season, but this is what he’s capable of at his best. Four SKW players reached double-digit rebounds, that is a season-best across all divisions thus far. |

RECAP: It’s no secret that Yung No Fly Zone (F) Michael Reding has been the best player in D1 since entering 5 seasons ago. But when he gets hot like this, it just feels like NFZ is unstoppable. Except that the Space Badgers were right there with them all along with what’s now trademark balls-out effort from (F) Zach Moretti. As well as NFZ played, racking up 21 assists on 25 made FGs, they never could shake SPB until the very last few plays of the game. |

TDL Summer 2016 Week 1 & 2 Results (D1 SUN)
WEEK 2
RECAP: The ISS Flightz missed most of the 1st qtr of this game, which put SK War Dog on the line shooting technical FTs until they arrived. That left ISS with a 0-13 deficit to start the game. For their part, ISS fought hard to get back into it, but never could get over the hump. ISS (F) Jeffrey “Birdman” Lam shot well, but they just couldn’t produce enough offense to overcome the deficit. The Flightz defended (G) Pat Youreneff well, holding him to just 7 pts on 0-10 FGs, but they couldn’t contain (G) “Vegas” Dave Wong who scored a game-high 18 pts in the win. |
RECAP: Last week Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out was able to get (G) Deric Kung going early from the perimeter to keep them in range to close out a defense-oriented win. But this week, Kung shot just 1-11 and the SHA offense never quite got it going against a more physical defense from the Free Agents. With freedom to run a point forward kind of role (F) Sherwin Salar put up a signature all-around game with 16 pts, 14 reb, 7 ast. But there was good ball movement up and down the roster as FAS shot a scorching 51% from the field. Even with SHA (F) Sam Lu getting more aggressive in the 2nd half, they couldn’t keep pace with a red hot FAS squad. |
||||||||||||||||
RECAP: After last week’s loss, Raining Rosebuds (G) Joseph Jaffee got offensive help from (G) Miguel Melbourne and (F) Mitch Moxley. Even if neither of them went off, their presence helped structure RAR’s offense, and helped new additions fill in better. But this game was decided by Yung No Fly Zone’s relentless offensive attack. Every time it seemed as if RAR would make a run to close within single digits, NFZ would make a big 3FG or find a layup in transition. New add (G) Sal Nasser fit in perfectly with NFZ’s attacking style and (F) Mike Reding was deadly as usual. (G) Ren Hsieh, called up for the short-handed roster, also helped NFZ close out late. |
WEEK 1
RECAP: With no big men and no established shooters available, the Raining Rosebuds were simply outmatched, even against the aging 5-man roster of SK War Dog. RAR (G) Joseph Jaffee, one of the league’s best facilitators and versatile PGs was thrust into the position to shoot more than he might be comfortable with as RAR worked in new players. And nobody was able to get it going as RAR shot a paltry .196 from the field. Meanwhile, the continuous wave of offensive attack from (G) Dave Wong and (G) Pat Youreneff finally broke the seal in the 2nd half as SKW cruised to victory. |
RECAP: This was an historically ugly game for Yung No Fly Zone, shooting a franchise worst 2-29 from behind the arc, with sharp-shooter (F) Saleem Ahmed going 0-9, and 0-11 from the field. But NFZ defended well enough to win this game, except that they let Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out (G) Deric Kung get hot. And once he got there, nothing NFZ could do would cool him off. Nevertheless, NFZ had chances to win this game, but uncharacteristically poor clock management did them in as SHA (F) Sam Lu closed this one out at the FT line. |

SK War Dog are Spring 2016 1st Division Champs
War Dog narrowly survives late game rally from VenturesNew York, NY — As expected, Financial Ventures opened the game in their pressure 2-3 zone, but there was a difference in tone than in their semifinal win over NFZ. Whereas the pressure D seemed to make the younger NFZ players tight, missing open looks, forcing passes they wouldn’t usually make, SK War Dog showed no such hesitation. This was a veteran that embraced the opportunity to play against a zone. SKW (G) Kash Miah was tuned in right away as his early aggression from the perimeter helped to open up the War Dog offense and spread the FVG defense thin. It was only gritty, physical play that kept SKW within reach for Ventures. (F) Kev Chang had scored only 6 pts in the 1st half, (G) Jason Chin had only two. Throughout the 3rd quarter, War Dog continued to extend its lead and looked ready to put this one away, particularly with (G) Pat Youreneff ably setting the table, and controlling the tempo. Ventures was forced to come out of its zone. Which gave its defense some signs of life. In the 4th qtr, FVG (F) Stanley Paul started heating up as the SKW defense began to tire. Chang also managed to finagle some tough conversions in the paint, but War Dog pushed the lead back up to double-digit mark with key baskets from Miah and (G) “Vegas” Dave Wong who found the range with his trademark bank 3FGs off the wing. SKW (F) Ted Hao also provided great weak side defense to limit FVG opportunities in the paint. This should have been an easy finish for War Dog except that late in the game, they saw typically strong FT shooters miss, and usually sure-handed veterans commit puzzling TOs. To make matters worse, Miah injured his knee on a non-contact play and had to sit out during crunch time. Youreneff was left as the de facto closer. He shot 88% from the FT line this season, 92% last season while leading the league both seasons in attempts. But he missed 3 in the final minute, and that allowed FVG’s Chang to make it suddenly very interesting with a flurry of 3FGs. A double-digit lead was whittled down to a single possession. But eventually, SK War Dog got the stops they needed as FVG missed on great opportunities to further extend the game. Youreneff’s rebounding during this stretch, (he finished with a game-high 10 reb), helped War Dog survive Ventures’ late rally, one with perhaps more second chances than SKW should have ever allowed. |
TDL Spring 2016 Championship Preview
(3) FINANCIAL VENTURES vs (4) SK WAR DOG
CHAMPIONSHIP – Tuesday (6/21) 8:30pm at Murry Bergtraum HS
Team Notes | Team | Score | Team | Team Notes |
Financial Ventures has survived two offensive duds from MVP candidate (F) Kev Chang to make it to the title game, and the reason for that is their defense. And their patience. Against NFZ, they ran a gambit, playing a pressure 2-3 zone that forced the Flyers to try and finish in the paint vs their bigs or shoot over the top.
SKW will field a similar lineup with a love for hoisting 3FGs, but they won’t be able to go into the post as regularly as they did vs NFZ. In this game, the guards will need to step up and knock down a few shots to open things up. Ventures still has more depth in the bigs dept. If (C) Jiang Yu can occupy one of SKW’s bigger forwards, (C) Rich Chang will see some mismatches. |
FVG 7-2 |
51-54 |
SKW 8-2 |
The truth is, coming into the West as a 4 seed was misleading. The other seeds were also 5-2, but only SHA had the pedigree to match SK War Dog, and they put them to rest on Sunday with a slugfest. War Dog has mostly been the favorite in every one of their match-ups and that won’t change tonight.
Like FVG, their win was less than convincing, but this deep into the playoffs, you do whatever you can to win. FVG’s pressure 2-3 D was effective vs NFZ due to their lack of a consistent mid-range option, but SKW doesn’t have one either. What they do have is better slashers in (G) Pat Youreneff & (G) David Wong that means better transition offense too. If FVG can’t contain SKW’s counter attack, it will be a long night. |
Key Player: Jason Chin
The other reason FVG survived just 6 ppg from Chang? Jason Chin. His clutch shooting, best exemplified by the game-winner in OT on Sunday, has been the difference offensively for FVG, a team that hasn’t found a lot other options so far. They’ll need another good one from Chin tonight whether anyone finds the stroke or not. FVG’s anemic offense can least afford Chin going cold. |
Pos: G Ht: 5-9 Wt: 175 12.5 ppg 4.0 3pg 1.5 apg |
Pos: G Ht: 5-10 Wt: 175 16.7 ppg 3.7 3pg 3.3 rpg |
Key Player: Kash Miah
Theoretically you would never play a zone against a team with a shooter like (G) Kash Miah. No player in D1 gets hotter faster than Miah. And he is savvy enough to manufacture ways of scoring and getting it going. FVG’s length and speed on the edges is what makes their 2-3 tough against shooters. So, Miah will have to get as creative as ever to get clean looks in this one. |
