TDL Fall 2016 Semi-Weekly Power Rankings

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(N/A)
GMM
2-0 Basically, if (G) Tommy Wong is going to shoot this well all season, then Guard Me Maybe is a danger. GMM loses (F) Jin Bae Kim but gets two newbies (G) Charlie Tran and versatile (F) Brian Law in return. So far, that’s worked out nicely for them.
(N/A) NGC 1-0 Having (G) Ace Watanasuparp and (F) Mark Lee as your primary scorers is formidable for any team, but the biggest add for NYC Gritty Committee may be (F) Bada Hong. The veteran forward looks better than ever, and has always been a steadying influence on the floor.
(N/A) DYN 1-0 It’s a new look roster for NY Dynasty and they’ve a little younger. (G) Will Moy will be a solid floor leader replacing (G) Ren Hsieh, and new add (G) Josh Fan will challenge for the D2 scoring title. The trick, as always with DYN, is making sure guys can make it to games.
(N/A) PRB 0-1 Pretty Boys will bring on (G) James Sung and (F) Andrew Ahn, which means there will be no shortage of hustle play and defense. The key for PRB will be their shooting efficiency. If they can keep their FG% at around 40%, they can win a lot of games.
(N/A) NYE 0-1 There are a number of familiar faces on Team NYCE, but they haven’t necessarily played together before. They’re anchored by 6-5 (C) Andre Lowden. With (F) Jason Chan and (C) Moon Yun on the roster as well, this may be D2’s most formidable front-line.
(N/A) JLA 1-1 New franchise Justice League has plenty of solid pieces on the roster. Power (G) Maxwell Ruffin should be posting big time #s all season and (C) Kasime Cole is a force on defense. If they build momentum, the ceiling is very high for JLA.
(N/A) DPY 0-2 Don’t Ever Play Yourself has a huge front-line, perhaps even bigger than NYE, but the struggle for DPY has been taking full advantage of their size in the paint. They’re getting there, don’t expect DPY to go win-less.

TDL Summer 2016 End-of-Season Awards (D2 SUN)

Position: SG
Seasons: 17

2ND DIVISION (SUN) MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER

DAVID CHU (SEX PANTHERS)

Statistics: 29.8 ppg, 44% FGs, 6 3pg, 4.4 rpg, 4 apg, 1.6 spg

Season Notes: There was no question who the best team was this season and who their best player was. Chu came into his own this summer, not just putting up ridiculous numbers, but leading a veteran team. When the Panthers needed him most, he always came up big, lifting SXP to a 2nd straight title in his best game from an all-time season.

 Runner-up: (G/F) Jin Bae Kim (TAP) 16 ppg, 44% FGs, 9.8 rpg, 1.8 apg, 2.6 spg, 1 bpg

Position: G/F
Seasons: 5

Wat Misaka Defensive Most Outstanding Player

JIN BAE KIM (TAP NY)

Statistics: 9.8 rpg, 2.6 spg, 1 bpg, 1.2 fpg

Season Notes: It often felt like Kim was everywhere at once on the court. His length and athleticism are rare in D2, and he used it to change games defensively, whether one-on-one or prowling the passing lanes. And his biggest asset was turning defense into easy baskets the other way.

 Runner-up: Bryan Ryhija (TEA) 12 rpg, 1.6 spg, 2 bpg, 1.6 fpg

Position: PF
Seasons: 2

The Sam Lo Hustle Award

BRYAN RYHIJA (TEAL CURTAIN)

Statistics: 9.6 ppg, 12 rpg, 1.6 spg, 2 bpg

Season Notes: After a modest spring season, Ryhija let it all hang out this season, leading Teal Curtain in rebounds and blocks. He was one of D2’s top help defenders and played as physical in the paint as anyone in the league all season.

 Runner-up: (C) Kevin Wong (NFZ) 7 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.8 spg, 1 bpg

Position: SG
Seasons: R

Spot Dessert Bar Most Outstanding Rookie

EDDIE TSAO (LARRY THE CABLE GUY’S KIDS)

Statistics: 16.3 ppg, 41% FGs, 6.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.9 spg

Season Notes: Few players were as exciting to watch this summer as Tsao, perhaps the new title holder as fastest end-to-end player in 2nd Division. But it wasn’t just layups, when Tsao had the jumper going, he was flat out impossible to guard.

TDL Summer 2016 End-of-Season Awards (D2 WN)

Position: PG

2ND DIVISION (WN) MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER

JUSTIN NGO (GAME 7)

Statistics: 17.7 ppg, 57% FGs, 4.2 rpg, 4 apg, 2 spg

Season Notes: Game 7 was a powerhouse that simply ran teams off the court this season, and that’s due to their floor leader, Ngo. A big shot maker, crafty defender, and the best passer in D2 (even with a modest 4 apg), it was Ngo that made this team feel unbeatable.

 Runner-up: (F) Sherwin Salar (BOM) 13.3 ppg, 60% FGs, 11.3 rpg, 3.4 apg, 2 spg

Position: PF
Seasons: 2

Wat Misaka Defensive Most Outstanding Player

HENRY LAM (MAGIKARPS)

Statistics: 11.8 rpg, 2.5 spg, 1.8 bpg, 2 fpg

Season Notes: It is not what you would call succinct. But his nickname now is officially “A Bulldozer With A Wrecking Ball Attached.” Lam was a monster all season, flying up and down the court, demolishing everything in his path.

 Runner-up: (C) Victor Chia (NGC) 11.7 rpg, 2.1 spg, 1.9 bpg, 2.1 fpg

Position: SF

The Sam Lo Hustle Award

JIN BAE KIM (GUARD ME MAYBE)

Statistics: 12.8 ppg, 11 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.2 spg, 0.8 bpg

Season Notes: Essentially a guard playing small forward, the rebounding numbers that Kim consistently puts up are absurd. This is the result of an all-out effort in every game. Nobody plays harder than Kim.

 Runner-up: (F) Pierre Riddle (PRB) 7.7 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.8 spg, 0.7 bpg

Position: SG

SOOIN LEE (GAME 7)

Statistics: 15.0 ppg, 43% FGs, 3.4 rpg, 3 apg, 1.6 spg

Season Notes: We’re bypassing the double-up award for Ngo to share the wealth, but this is no second fiddle prize. Lee could have just as easily been the MVP had he not gone a little cold in the last few games. He and Ngo were a dynamic duo, terrorizing back courts all season long.

TDL Summer 2016 Championship Preview (D2 SUN)

(1) SEX PANTHERS vs (2) TAP NY

Championship – Sunday (9/18) 12:00pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
They have been the favorites to win it all for three straight seasons, and in their first title defense, the Sex Panthers finally look like a team that has settled in with who they are. Even when they get down early in games, like they did in the semis vs RAP, they stay composed, and fight. Even when their usual scorers aren’t hitting shots, they persevere and find a way to win. SXP has now became a true champion.
SPB
7-1

TAP
6-2
Last time TAP NY made it to a title game, they lost a heart-breaker, then they fell of for a while. But they’re back again in what may be their best season as a franchise. It’s no secret, (F) Jin Bae Kim has been a huge addi to this team, really the perfect fit, he’s given TAP everything they were missing. TAP doesn’t have the depth that SXP does, but their Top 5 is every bit as good and they have a real chance for their first title.
Key Player: David Chu

Chu can get trigger-happy from the 3-pt line, but in yesterday’s semis he kept his composure and pulled through a cold stretch to make key shots down the stretch in the win. There’s no question Chu can shoot, the key is how he reacts to misses.

X-Factor: Greg Loeffert

Loeffert didn’t shoot well in their semifinal win, but he brings much more to the table as his 9 reb, 5 ast and 3 stl can attest. Even when he isn’t shooting well, Loeffert is never short on effort, and he makes a lot of little plays that get wins.

Key Player: Will Chu

Chu hasn’t had the best season, but he is still the player who initiates the offense. His manic energy on offense is what make TAP feel like they are constantly on the attack. If he gets it going from 3, TAP can become really tough to stop.

X-Factor: Jin Bae Kim

Kim will be the fastest player in this game, and if you don’t defend him well, he will get to the line and make a ton of FTs. SXP is a bit quicker than FOB, but how much Kim scores has a lot to do with how patient he is. He’ll do everything else regardless.
