TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – Semifinals (D2 WN)

(2) BOMB SQUAD vs (6) GUARD ME MAYBE

Semifinals – Wednesday (9/7) 7:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
It’s not the deepest team in D2, but Bomb Squad‘s top 5 are as good as anyone. They don’t have 3-pt shooting, but they score well in the paint, and their defense is tough and physical, esp in the front-court. Even if the shots aren’t falling, you can count on their effort on D.
BOM
5-2

55-52

GMM
4-4
It took Guard Me Maybe a little longer than they’d hoped to reach their potential, but they’re here. Now, BOM is a team diametrically opposed in their roster & offensive approach. This one comes down to who will enforce their style–exactly what GMM did to NGC in Rd 1.
Key Player: Sherwin Salar

BOM is built on Salar’s versatile skills. He is their best rebounder, passer, and a top defender. It’s just that the effort can leave little energy to score, and sometimes BOM needs that most.

X-Factor: David Hsiung

Hsiung is also a solid all-around vet who is never short on effort and makes the right plays. When he’s able to get it going from the 3-pt line, BOM becomes a tough team to keep pace with.

Key Player: Jin Bae Kim

Even when Kim isn’t scoring, he can dominate a game with his all-around play. His speed and quickness has no peer in D2. And he has the motor to match. Look for a big game vs a slower BOM line.

X-Factor: Tommy Wong

The veteran Wong always hits you when it hurts you most. He can be a streaky 3-pt shooter, but clutch 3FGs are his forte. When he gets it going, it opens up the paint for Kim and (G) Kento Kato to take advantage.

(1) GAME 7 vs (4) MAGIKARPS

Semifinals – Thursday (9/8) 8:30pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Game 7 hasn’t finished a game this season in which their opponent was within double-ditis. That’s should be an indication of how much they’re expected to win it all this season. No team is deeper, or better offensively and defensively. This is basically a parade to the coronation.
GA7
7-0

65-52

MGK
4-4
It wasn’t the most convincing rout to the semifinals, but here stands BK All Day one win away from returning to the title game, where they’ve been twice before (winning once). It’s a veteran unit, with Premier’s top rebounder, and a deadly shooter. All they have to do is get hot.
Key Player: Justin Ngo

Ngo started season quietly, content with finding his teammates, but he’s now topped 19 pts in 3 of his last 4, including 31 in Week 7. His 3-pointer is knockdown right now. Oh and he’s the best passer in the league.

X-Factor: Sooin Lee

Lee’s bread & butter is speed and the ability to finish in transition. He’s the main weapon GA7 uses when converting TOs into easy buckets. If you’re not careful, he’ll hang 20 on you before you know it.

Key Player: Henry Lam

This guy is what they call a bulldozer with a wrecking ball attached. Laced with plastic explosives. At this level, Lam is a complete monster, esp in the open court. He’s gonna need big #s for MGK to stand a chance.

X-Factor: Angelo Green

If Lam is the key to MGK even being competitive, then Green is the guy who might be able to steal them a win. He’s a widely un-scouted player but he can do it all. And if the shots falling, you just never know.

TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – First Round

(3) NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE vs (6) GUARD ME MAYBE

First Round – Tuesday (8/30) 9pm at Murry Bergtraum HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
NYC Gritty Committee added (F) Brandon Sang to the roster this season to bolster their front-court. Which seemed to help (G) Steve Chung get more open looks. But last season’s MVP candidate (F) Mark Lee has been noticeably quiet. The truth is, this team hasn’t had any consistency in their lineup, with subs coming in and out. But they still have a core group from last season’s semifinals run. If they can get quick chemistry, they have the pedigree to win it all.
NGC
5-2

58-53

GMM
3-4
Guard Me Maybe has been maybe the toughest team to gauge in D3 this season. They have great young speed in (G) Kento Kato and (F) Jin Bae Kim, along with veteran back up in (G) Tommy Wong, but they just haven’t been consistent. They did, however, get into the playoffs by winning 3 of their last 4 games. The only bad news is (F) Al Chen being designated out for the rest of the season with a flare up in his knee. He had otherwise been a huge mid-season add for GMM.
Key Player: Steve Chung

This season, Chung has shot well and his #s are vastly improved. If’s also a huge difference for his team as his range helps spread the court for NGC’s bigs to get better looks, and to open driving lanes for teammate (F) Mark Lee. If he continues to shoot well, this is a real tough team to beat.

Key Player: Jin Bae Kim

Kim is the arguably the quickest, most athletic player in D2. He is versatile, plays with a great motor on both sides of the ball, and he is a nightmare to guard in transition. His weakness might be reading the D. At times he can get tunnel vision, but if he’s hitting his mid-range shot, he can dominate the game.

(4) MAGIKARPS vs (5) NY DYNASTY

First Round – Wednesday (8/30) 7pm at MLK HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
In their first match-up, DYN took control of the game early and got the easy W. But, the Magikarps didn’t have (G) Angelo Green or (F) Henry Lam in the lineup. The two have been the team’s MVPs this season so obviously this will be a vastly different game. Green and Lam will give MGK the weapons to test DYN’s aging defense. MGK
3-4

52-54

DYN
3-4
This is the rare lower seed getting a spread in their favor. That’s because the NY Dynasty made it look easy in their regular season match-up. But again, MGK didn’t have key players. But neither did DYN. Since (C) Len Kamdang has joined the roster, plus a resurgence from (F) Wilson Wang, DYN has been much stronger headed into playoffs.
Key Player: Henry Lam

There might not be a stronger guy going to the hoop than Lam. He’s built like a mini-tank, has good speed in transition, and a big motor on the defensive end. He can dominate on both ends of the court and the Magikarps will need him to do so.

Key Player: Len Kamdang

The veteran center is easily the league’s biggest player, but he’s also 40 years old. DYN has done a good job of using him in spurts, and the result has been a string of solid outings in which he has looked fit, and very capable of carrying his share of the load.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 6 Power Rankings (D2 SUN)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SXP
5-0 No surprises here, as long as they’re healthy, the Sex Panthers have the depth to run the table this season. No player on the roster has made it to every game, but they’ve found a way to win anyway. (G) David Chu & (F) Chris Di are both in MVP form right now, and (G) Greg Loeffert would be a star guard of any other team in the league.
(+2) TAP 4-1 Well what do you know, after a couple of bad seasons, TAP NY is back among the big dogs. They have (G) Will Chu and (G) John Hsu in peak form and (F) Jin Bae Kim has been just the piece they’ve needed with his great athleticism and energy on defense.
(+3) RAP
3-2 Raptors addition (F/C) Mike Adames hasn’t exactly dominated by the numbers, but his impact has been immediate for a team that needed a presence in the paint on defense and someone to finish plays. With RAP’s signature grit, consider this team a dark horse for the playoffs.
(-1) TEA 3-2 They’ve given up a couple of winnable games, always playing with what seems like a short roster, but Teal Curtain‘s performance against the rest of the Top 4 teams is worth of championship consideration. They have size and hustle up and down the roster, a prototype playoff team.
(-3) NFZ 3-2 No Fly Zone OG had been treading water with a very thin roster, and it all finally sank the past two weeks with two straight losses. If they can get everyone there, this is a contender, but until they prove they can do so consistently, middle of the pack is the best they can expect.
(-1) FOB 2-3 It’s been another mediocre season for Gritty FOB City, but they have the weapons and veteran savvy to make a run, now that they’ve secured a playoff spot. It’s just a matter of who they meet in the 1st rd at this point. Staying here at the 6th seed might be perfect.
(=) LAR 0-5 Admittedly, we thought Larry’s Kids would have gotten a win by now. They’ll have a chance this week, and when they face the also win-less GOA in the season finale.  A little bit more low-post scoring would go a long way for this team.
(=) GOA 0-5 Goat Herders still getting a ton of points from the front-court, enough that they really should be closer in games, but for whatever reason, the once champs from long ago, have not found the magic this season.
