TDL Spring 2017 Playoff Previews (D2, D3)

(1) SPAGHETTI RAMEN vs (5) NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE

D3 WN Playoffs (Semifinals) – Tuesday, June 13, 7pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Last season was the first in 4 seasons that SPAGHETTI RAMEN was not in the title game. This bona fide dynasty is looking to fix that blemish with a return trip this season. (G) Leuis Ng with yet another MVP-caliber season leads the way with (F) Matt Auerbach sitting shotgun. Ramen is very much the team to beat.
SPR
6-1

58-52

NGC
4-4
NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE has one strength that may give them the advantage over SPR, and that’s (C) Victor Chia’s size. SPR has no real match-up but they do a good job of making opponents play their tempo. Gritty won’t thrive in an uptempo game, they need to slow down and let (G) James Choi orchestrate, but will SPR let them?
Key Player: Leuis Ng

When it’s all said and done, Ng may finish as TDL’s most decorated all-time player. Not only as he picked up numerous MVPs, he’s become one of the most clutch players in the league, across all divisions. This makes SPR very tough to beat.

Pos: G

Key Player: Teddy Oh

If Gritty can get the same kind of output from Oh as they got in Game 1 (18 pts, 6 ast), then they may have a chance. Oh has been one D3’s most exciting rookies, so another break out game here, and we might have found a new NGC star.

(2) TEAM BINY vs (3) NY DYNASTY

D3 WN Playoffs (Semifinals) – Tuesday, June 13, 8:15pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
TEAM BINY has tons of veteran talent, and they’ve all been here before. Their only goal is to win a championship. Rookie (G) Will Zhou has been a great spark plug off the bench, and his ability to attack the basket along with their established vets, could give DYN fits on the defensive end.
BIN
5-2

58-55

DYN
6-2
Defending champs NY DYNASTY squeaked by a tough SNB, which exposed possible weaknesses in their offense. But with (G) Caleb Lui and (C) Dan Tak on D, this is one of the toughest teams to score on. This should be another ugly one, but both semifinal games are looking to be great match-ups.
Key Player: Eden Chuang

After playing mostly a defensive role as 6th man in last seasons’s DYN championship team, Chuang has returned to BIN with vintage play. He’s been one of the best players off the dribble this season and he’ll give DYN’s Lui all he can handle.

Pos: G
22.3 ppg

Key Player: David Chu

The veteran scorer’s 22.3 ppg was second in D3 this season. His ability to shoot the three and make FTs make him an efficient scorer, but even tougher is how relentlessly his team will try to get him the ball. The shots never stop coming.

(1) DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF vs (5) SKILLSHARE

D2 WN Playoffs (Semifinals) – Tuesday, June 13, 9:30pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF has come a long way, from last to first in just 4 seasons. Rookie (G) Emery Clark has given them the guard depth they needed to pair with (G) Kali Pearson. DPY always had plenty of forwards and size in the paint. Now they just have to keep the momentum going for a title run.
DPY
6-1

52-48

SKL
5-3
SKILLSHARE should have been a contender all season, but absences from key players hurt in crucial games. Still, as they proved in their 1st rd win over HAR, they are tough to beat with a full roster. And that’s the catch here, SKL is expecting a number of missing players in this one. But they will no doubt bring everything they have for it.
Key Player: Tyler McFarlane

The versatile McFarlane has had a consistent season with solid #s. He is adept at getting in for offensive rebounds and getting out on the break. That’s where he can hurt you most, is finishing in the paint, and drawing fouls in the process.

Pos: F

Key Player: Scott Sullivan

Sullivan came through with a big game (2o pts, 9 reb) just as expected in Rd I. And he’s gonna need to play even bigger against DPY’s massive front line. If SKL is going to be short handed, Sullivan will be carrying a very heavy load.

TDL Spring 2017 Playoff Previews (D2, D3 WN)

(4) TEAM HARDWOOD vs (5) SKILLSHARE

D2 WN Playoffs (1st Rd) – Thursday, June 8, 6:45pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
TEAM HARDWOOD had a strong start, but finished just 1-2 to end the season, losing to D2’s top two seeded teams. HAR is a big, physical team with a slashing scorer in (G) Justin Rigney, and a strong option in the paint with (F) Justin Drucker. They have plenty of solid pieces, the trick is just getting them all to work together.
HAR
4-3

51-50

SKL
4-3
After one title, and some dominant seasons in D3, SKILLSHARE made the move up to D2. They have more than held their own. If not for a few key absences this season, they might have been a Top 2 seed. (G) Justin Blakney has been a solid add this season, giving them an extra scoring option despite some inconsistent shooting this season.
Key Player: Justin Rigney

A crafty ball-handler, Rigney is quick off the dribble and who finds ways of sneaking into the slimmest of creases. He is HAR’s best play-maker, and his ability to drive and create is integral to their offense.

Pos: F

Key Player: Scott Sullivan

Sullivan earned MVP honors in D3 last season, and he has carried that over to a solid D2 campaign. He is one of D2’s most versatile players, and is relentless attacking both on offense and on the glass.

(4) YIELDMO vs (5) NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE

D3 WN Playoffs (1st Rd) – Thursday, June 8, 7:45pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
YIELDMO has looked a little shaky at times, but at full strength, they have some solid pieces, that if clicking, could mean a title run. If (G) Derek Lu (18.3 ppg) wasn’t already enough on offense, they also have (F) Max Paynter, a versatile big who is as unstoppable as you’re going to see in D3.
YIE
4-3

57-55

NGC
3-4
NYC GRITTY has tons of veteran playoff experience. (G) James Choi was the best PG off the dribble in D3 this season, despite an inconsistent jumper. But if outside shooters are hitting, and if (C) Victor Chia is finishing in the paint, they have the defensive physicality on the other end to steal this one.
Key Player: Max Paynter

Paynter is big, athletic, and tireless. And he has skills across the board. He should be first on the list of any kind of game-plan. The only thing is, there just may not be one that can stop him.

Pos: G

Key Player: Steven Chung

This has been one of Chung’s best seasons in a while. The veteran gunner has shot efficiently, and has moved the ball better. If he gets hot, his quick trigger opens up a lot of offense for NGC.

(3) UNCLE BOUGHT A COW vs (6) SPACE JAM

D2 WN Playoffs (1st Rd) – Thursday, June 8, 8:45pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
After opening the season with a loss, UNCLE BOUGHT A COW won four straight to claim their stake as a contender. Then they lost two in a row with their starting backcourt out of the lineup the last two weeks. At full strength, this team can win it all led by gritty defensive play.
UBC
4-3

56-50

JAM
3-4
SPACE JAM finished without a win last season, but bounced back with a solid 3-4 finish to nab the last seed.  They shoot a lot of threes, and this season they’ve been making them. They also have a big front-line to help them get more attempts. If they get hot, they can upset any team.
Key Player: David Weiss

Weiss’ teammate (F) Ben Hoynes has put up MVP #s this season, but as UBC witnessed with their PG out of the lineup, they need him to win. Weiss is a feisty lead scorer who gets it all started with tough D first.

This has been one of the veteran Novosad’s best seasons. Into his 40s now, Novosad has shot a strong 38% from 3 this season on 9 3FGAs a game. If Novosad can spark his team offensively, JAM can win this.

(3) NY DYNASTY vs (6) SMASH N BOUNCE

D3 WN Playoffs (1st Rd) – Thursday, June 8, 9:45pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
Defending champs NY DYNASTY have made big roster changes, but (G) David Chu is still where the offense is coming from. (G) Caleb Lui is just as capable a setup man as former (G) Ren Hsieh, and a far better defender. In fact, he and (F) Dan Tak might be the best in D3 at their position on D. DYN should still be the favorite to win it all.
DYN
5-2

55-51

SNB
3-4
SMASH N BOUNCE is a defensive minded team that played DYN to a point 43-44 in their final reg season game. If they can muster that kind of defensive effort again, they can give themselves a chance. Their biggest weakness, however, is offense, with the team scoring just 46.9 ppg., second lowest in D3. They’ll need more than that to beat DYN.
Key Player: David Chu

Chu has long been a focal point of opposing defenses. A knock down 3-pt shooter with unlimited range, Chu will just keep coming at you on offense. Defenses simply can’t take any plays off.

Pos: G
22.3 ppg
5.9 rpg
2.9 apg

Pos: G
9.9 ppg
5.6 rpg
2.3 spg
Key Player: Andrew Tu

The veteran Tu is scored just under 10 ppg this season, which is a drop from his usual output, but his speed and active play on both sides of the ball will be key to sparking the SNB offense.

TDL Spring 2017 Week 6 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

PREMIER DIVISION

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SIX
4-0 Still undefeated, TEAM SIX has just found ways to win. Four players are scoring in double-digits so far this season, so they come at you with as balanced an attack as ever. Speedy (G) B.J. Davis could be a break out player this season.
(=) WHG 4-1 Point (G) Michael Springer is leading the way for WE HAD GAME with sharpshooters (G/F) Jordan Schultz and (G/F) Zack Simmons on the wings. They don’t have much in a low-post threat this season, but so far they haven’t needed one.
(=) MWW
2-2 This is more losses already than we’re accustomed to seeing for METTA WORLD WAR, but rest assured they will still make the playoffs and contend for the title this season. With their full roster, no team has more firepower or a better team defense.
(+2) DYN 2-2 NY DYNASTY bounced back with two straight wins after a poor start. (F) Osazee Omokaro is back, and has given DYN the defensive lift they needed. (F) Michael Reding has also returned, and has been red hot from behind the arc this season, making 6.3 3pg at 53%.
(-1) SPA 1-2 Getting (G) Josh Hyon on the floor is great for the NYK SPARTANS, but despite a strong 26-point debut, SPA couldn’t quite pull out the win. But the Spartans will finally get the consistent perimeter scoring they’d been lacking for the past several seasons.
(-1) PNL 1-3 It’s good to see (F) Seamus McKiernan inching closer to the 20-10 machine he was before injury, but defense has been PEACE & LOVE‘s weakness again this season. Not particularly long or athletic, PNL needs a more cohesive team defense to get stops when they need them most.
(=) STM 0-4 STRANGER TEAM has also struggled with cohesion, in all facets. This is a young team with great energy and athleticism, but they haven’t quite turned all that into winning plays. If they get it together, though, this is a team that could make a move.

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) CRV 5-1 CRAFTY VETS took a loss by forfeit then bounced back with a huge 90-73 win over OPA last night. In (G) Chris Daley, they have the best player in D1, and only one team has come close to challenging them.
(=) GA7 3-2 The loss to OPA wasn’t a good one, but they do have a win over YOLO on the resume, and played CRV tougher than any other team so far. So for now, GAME 7 will stay at #2. But put it in pencil.
(=)
YOL
3-2 Their numbers don’t dazzle you, but YOLO has gotten solid wins against HON and OPA. They have three new players with double-figure scoring output led by (F) Warren Green‘s 13.7 ppg.
(=) OPA 3-2 So far so good for OPTION A, even after the blowout loss to CRV. The scoring duo of (F) Phil Thomas (15.8 ppg) and (F) Haris Ahmed (17.4 ppg), with (G) Scheed Bailey (10.6 ppg) has been potent enough so far.
(=) HON 2-2 The only consistency the HONEY BADGERS have seen so far is (F) Zach Moretti, the only player to have played in every game. They will probably still make the playoffs, but they have to get their rotation set.
(=) JLA 1-4 Rough season so far for JUSTICE LEAGUE, they were already a streaky shooting team, and this season the shots just aren’t falling. JLA is shooting just 21% from three. And there hasn’t been much in the paint either.
(=) STA 1-4 STADIUM STARS have some solid young players who compete in every game with fire. It’s just going to take some time for the team to gel as a unit and develop a cohesive defensive strategy.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1) UBC
3-1 UNCLE BOUGHT A COW (F) Ben Hoynes is playing MVP ball, leading D2 with 14.8 rpg. With his work on the glass and the all-around effort of rookie (F) Marco Barratta, the front-court has been more than a supporting cast for (G) David Weiss.
(+2) DPY
4-1 They score by committee and don’t put up a lot of points, but DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF plays tough physical D that keeps games close. And this season, they’ve found ways to pull out close games.
(-2) HAR
3-2 TEAM HARDWOOD has been solid, losing two games by six combined points against the only teams above them. They should contend, pairing a big front line with a crafty (G) Justin Rigney.
(+1) SKL
4-2 It’s been an up and down season for SKILLSHARE, but they’ve won the games they should have won. But with the bigger lineups in D2, they will need a full roster to contend for the title.
(-2)
NGC
3-2 The defending champs are interested in only one thing, getting back to the championship game. Once the playoffs start, you should see a sudden uptick in the effort from NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE
(+1) JAM
3-3 SPACE JAM‘s front line is as big as they come in D2 and (F) J.L. Novosad has scored well this season. And so has (G) Liam Lee and (F) Jon Clark. The result of all this is a .500 record. JAM is a wild card.
(-1) GMM
1-5 Tough season for GUARD ME MAYBE, even after getting (F) Brian Law back in the lineup. GMM was just never able to build any continuity, looking uneven in most games after a big win to open the season.
(=) ROT 0-5 Newbies DA ROTI PROJECT has not worked so far, but as with many expansion teams, it can take time. This is a very big roster so working in a proper rotation should be a priority for next season.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SPR
4-1 Another MVP caliber season for (G) Leuis Ng as he leads SPAGHETTI RAMEN. (F) Matt Auerbach remains a solid option, though his scoring has dipped, and (F) Mark Hahn hasn’t even gotten going yet.
(+2)
DYN
3-2 As well as Ng has played this season, NY DYNASTY (G) David Chu may be the front-runner for MVP. And two of his teammates can vie for the Defensive MVP. This team is top heavy, but if Chu is on, look out.
(-1) YIE
4-2 The combo of (G) Derek Lu and (F) Max Paynter will be tough for any team to beat in the playoffs. YIELDMO will be a contender right away when the post-season begins.
(-1) BIN
2-2 TEAM BINY has taken a couple of tough losses, but come playoff time you can expect this team to challenge for the title. If (G) Tony Cuadrado can get playoff eligible, he bolsters a deep roster of guards.
(=) NGC 3-2 Solid season for (F) Steven Chung, he’s shooting more consistently for NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE than he has in awhile. NGC is never a deep team, but they have personnel who could move this team up.
(=) SNB 2-3 SMASH N BOUNCE is in solid playoff position with wins over WSW and NET, but they can do themselves a big favor with one more win. It won’t be easy, playing all Top 4 teams the remainder of the season..
(=) WSW 1-2 WHAT IS A SEAWOLF? keeps getting their games pushed due to some bad luck, but they have an MVP candidate, too, in (G) Tommy Zheng, if they can just win some games now.
(=) NET 0-6 This certainly isn’t the result the NASTY NETS were hoping for, but it’s all about getting reps with the team. Even the defending champion DYN took several seasons before they could contend.
