TDL Summer 2016 Playoff Preview – Semifinals

(1) SPAGHETTI RAMEN vs (4) STINKY TOFU

The defending champions are right on track to defend their title, riding their #1 seed to an easy 1st rd win over MYP. Spaghetti Ramen (G) Leuis Ng is having one of his best-ever seasons, and should be a shoe-in for MVP. The tricky part may be whether (F) Mark Hahn is able to play. The perennial All-Def Team honoree re-aggravated a long-time shoulder injury this season, and won’t be 100% even if he is cleared to play.

5-3		 A couple of very positive things came out of Stinky Tofu‘s first round win over FRE. (G) Eden Chuang had his best game of the season and (G) Paul Savino continues to bring a great all around effort. Which means they got the win despite a quiet night from (F) Carson Yiu. If they can continue to get this kind of balanced scoring, they very much could get back to the title game. And why not try to knock off SPR right now rather than in the chip. 
Key Player: Leuis Ng

The veteran Ng is a perennial MVP candidate–especially this season–for a reason. He’s the catalyst for SPR’s offense, doing his best work out in transition, and orchestrating the team’s half-court sets. He brings an all-around game in which you’ll see big #s in almost every statistical cat.

Savino has done a brought in great all-around #s as well for his team, though their game styles are quite different. Lately, Savino seems to be a threat to net a triple-double in every game, but his crafty defense may be his best asset, the aspect of his game TOF needs most.

Even with (G) David Weiss out of the lineup in the 1st rd, Doris From Rego Park had enough to knock off LEG–though it wasn’t exactly easy. (G) Zach Koerber stepped in with a big effort to help carry DOR to the semifinals. But now, facing a veteran team like DYN, they could use every man on deck, particularly a savvy veteran like Weiss who is as effective on defense as offense. DOR

6-2		 In the reg season, DOR dominated the NY Dynasty, who played with a limited roster, and no bigs in the lineup. This week, they will have (F) Steve Song but not defensive maestro (C) Dan Tak, which means they’ll have to find a way to outscore their opponent. (G) Ren Hsieh looked tuned in as ever en route to a league-high 28 pts in the 1st rd., and they’ll need a repeat performance to beat DOR. 
Key Player: Zach Koerber

With Weiss out, the rookie Koerber stepped up well enough to get his team the win. Koerber is big for a guard in this division and his all-around skills give DOR a versatile offensive weapon and a defender that plays with motor.

With more balanced scoring down the roster this season, Song wasn’t called upon to score much. But he is a dynamic post-up player who could be due for a big game vs a DOR defense whose weakness on D is arguably in the paint.

Doris From Rego Park has been one of D3’s strongest contenders this season, losing only to the defending champions. (G) David Weiss has played mostly on an MVP level this season (16.7 ppg, 3.9 apg) and (F) Kyle Wilson has started to find the 3-pt range again. (G) Zach Koerber gives the team another versatile option, and he’s relatively big for a guard at this level. If they can keep their momentum going into the playoffs, they can win it all.

3-4		 After a 3-gm losing streak, it didn’t look good for LEGO, but they found a way to make the playoffs with solid guard play from (G) Jon Chiu, (G) Ivan Hui and (G) Chris Lee. Rookie (C) Danius Giedraitis has also given them a defensive presence in the paint, and he’s the league’s top rebounder at 11.4 rpg. If Chiu and Lee can attack DOR’s interior D, it can open things up for Hui from 3. That may be their best chance against a DOR team sure to play man D.
Key Player: David Weiss

Weiss is as good a PG as you can get in this division. Though sometimes TO prone, his physical strength and stamina give him an advantage over most other guards in D3. When his shot heats up, he is very capable of carrying his team offensively.

Chiu is a do-it-all utility man for LEG but he’s also their best scorer. They’ll need a big game from him to have a chance. Passing is not his strength, he needs to focus on attacking the DOR defense and creating openings for his teammates with his activity.

First Round – Thursday (8/25) 9pm at Murry Bergtraum HS

The last D3 season, Stinky Tofu made the championship game only to get blown out by SPR. Call this the redeem team. They haven’t looked quite as dominant in that first season, but (F) Carson Yiu is as filled with rage as ever, still one of the most aggressive players in the league. And (G) Paul Savino has stepped in nicely, giving TOF more depth at guard. This season TOF is a bit smaller than last, but it’s a faster team with the veteran savvy to make another title run. TOF

4-3		 The NY Freemasons are a bit of a surprise this season. After losing (F) Albert Hei and (F) Neil Dumadag, they had some big shoes to fill at skill positions. But rookie (G) Steven Wong has done just that. With (G) Johnny Lee and (F) Mike Lee, along with Wong, providing an aggressive defense, FRE can surprise a team that sleeps on them. Wong can get hot from the perimeter, and that defense will never stop attacking the passing lanes. 
Key Player: Carson Yiu

Nobody can say they go harder than Yiu. Admittedly, it can be hit or miss sometimes, but his team goes as he goes, and when Yiu gets it going, particularly out in transition, TOF is a very tough team to beat.

 Key Player: Steven Wong

Wong is a strong, physical guard that plays with confidence and uses his body well. He can step back and hit the 3, and finish around the basket. Perhaps more impressive is his equal contribution on D.

First Round – Thursday (8/25) 8pm at MLK HS

This is the team to beat. Spaghetti Ramen is not only the defending champion, but they also just won the PAAG ’16 Intermediate Division with a slightly modified roster. This is to say the team is red hot and very confident going into the playoffs. There really isn’t much more to say.

2-5		 There is some raw young talent here on MYPC‘s roster. (F) Steve Shin leads the way but (F) Jim Yang and (C) Ju Zhang will also be key to the team’s success. They give MYP a big presence in the paint, and if they can both contribute on offense then MYP might have a chance… at making this a single-digit game.
Key Player: Leuis Ng

There’s no question, Ng is bound for the TDL Hall of Fame when he is done playing. There is no player who means more to his team, and there is no more decorated. And he could very well be MVP again this season. Ng is as key a player as you can get.

Shin is the veteran of this team, but still young with some rawness to his game, but he has a knack of getting into the paint and finishing tough, acrobatic shots. He’s really the only 3-pt threat they have, and not a strong one. MYP will need him to shoot efficiently in this one.

(3) NY DYNASTY vs (6) SKILLSHARE

First Round – Thursday (8/25) 9pm at MLK HS

This may be the most even match up of the first round. Their regular season game went down the wire but  NY Dynasty prevailed. The same core is there with (G) Ren Hsieh at the helm, but the addition of (C) Dan Tak has bolstered their defensive presence in the paint. (G) Tran Truong had given them another 3-pt threat until his injury. His replacement (F) Chris Chao has been a great energy player. If they can get hot, DYN could be a contender. DYN

4-3		 Supreme Team has come a long way and now they’re in their first ever conference finals after a big win over NGC that proved a lot for this team. BSH might instill fear in a lot of teams with their size on the front-court, but not SUP. They’re one of only two other teams that can go toe-to-toe with their bigs. And that goes for size and all out heart. Nobody plays harder than the duo of (F) Joseph Choi & (C) Max Choi. And again, like BSH, their guards are tough and scrappy and they’ve finally figured out how to win close games.
Key Player: Ren Hsieh

The truth is, the only player that can really create offense on this roster is Hsieh. He’s also their best set-up man which puts him in a quandary of balancing set up and scoring. The veteran guard is used to it, though, and if he gets hot, he can carry this team a long way.

Curtis has to deal with the same, Best set up man, best scorer. Both he and Hsieh have kept their respective teams happy, and Curtis, with younger legs, has been the better of the two. But knowing them, it won’t come down to a 1-on-1 battle. It will be who adjusts their team’s offense better.

DOR		 5-1 With a revamped roster, Doris From Rego Park has looked very solid despite a loss to SPR, and despite (F) Kyle Wilson missing a number of games this season. (G) David Weiss is playing MVP ball. The ice up here is looking very thin right now, though.
2 (=) DYN 4-1 They gave up a 20-pt lead twice to TOF, or NY Dynasty would be 5-0 with a #1 ranking. But such is a team without (G) Ren Hsieh in the line-up. He’s been their pace-setter all season, and this week they’ll get to play DOR for the rights to the top spot.
3 (+1) SPR 4-1 After an early loss in Week 2, Spaghetti Ramen has quietly snuck back into the race for the top seed. (G) Leuis Ng is back to his usual MVP #s and (F) Mark Hahn is looking as healthy and as much a terror on the defensive end as ever. They’re the defending champs for a reason.
4 (+1) TOF 3-3 Stinky Tofu has climbed back into relevance after losing 3 of their first 4. (F) Carson Yiu has been solid as ever, another MVP candidate to be sure. (C) Jason Chan still anchors the D, but it’s (G) Paul Savino that’s made the difference. When he plays well, particularly on D, TOF thrives.
5 (+1) SKL 3-3 Skillshare has clinched a playoff spot so they can breathe easy now. It’s been a choppy regular season with guys in and out of the lineup, but this is a team built for the playoffs. Big front-line with smart, dynamic guards in the backcourt. SKL will be a dark horse contender. 
6 (-3) FRE 3-3 Rookie (G) Steven Wong has been the Freemasons best and most consistent player all season. It’s when they can get contributions from the role player that they can make some noise, this is a tough defense. Luckily, they’re locked for playoffs, beating the teams they needed to.
7 (=) DEM 2-3 After losing their first two, Dem Boyz has won 2 of their last 3 to get back into the playoff race. They need a win over LEG this week to lock up their playoff spot. (G) Gabe Melendez has been a great addition to the team, giving DEM more perimeter offense and defensive energy. 
8 (=) MYP 2-3 Since MYPC lost the tie-breaker to LEG, they can’t afford to finish with just two wins. They’ll have to beat FRE, or tougher yet, SPR in the next two weeks. (G) Steve Shin has carried this team but when they get good games from (F) Jim Yang, that’s when MYP can make a move.
9 (=) LEG 2-4 Just one more win will do it. If Lego can beat DEM, they’ll secure a spot in the playoffs. They have solid pieces to get it done, but they need all hands on deck. (C) Danius Giedraitis has been a solid defensive presence, and LEG has a deep, skilled backcourt. One more win.
10 (=) FAT 0-6 Unfortunately, the Fatties are out of playoff contention, but they’ve had some solid moments. (G) Alex Yu and (F) James An have been two of the league’s more entertaining players to watch.

Player of the Game: Ren Hsieh (DYN) 17 pts, 3 ast

RECAP: NY Dynasty went to zone early on to counter Skillshare’s superior size, but it wasn’t working very well. SKL dominated the paint anyway and  zone allowed (G) Elliot Curtis to orchestrate the offense without pressure. In the 4th qtr, DYN finally switched to man D and it made all the difference. They were finally getting stops they needed. Down 6 midway into the final period, DYN (F) Chris Seerveld hit consecutive 3FGs to tie the game. Then with the going back and forth, (G) Tran Truong hit two 3FGs to give DYN the lead for good.

RECAP: MYPC played right there with LEGO until a big 3rd qtr run put LEG up for good. Their rookie duo (GO Jeffery Chen and (G) Ivan Hui led the way with a combined 28 pts and 7 ast while (F) Jonathan Chiu finished with another solid all-around game. MYP (F) Steve Shin posted big numbers again with a game high 22 pts and 4 stl, but he couldn’t enough supplementary offense down the roster to keep pace with a red hot LEGO team.

RECAP: Fatties played solid defense in the opening quarter holding Dem Boyz to just 9 pts to start, and they kept pace in the 2nd qtr as well, to go into halftime down just 30-20. That is striking range for most teams, but DEM put up a big 3rd qtr to push the lead to 18 as (G) Kento Kato and (G) Xavier Melendez overwhelmed FAT with transition offense. FAT saw three scorers reach double-digits for the first time this season, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with DEM.

RECAP: A big 2nd qtr gave Spaghetti Ramen the advantage as they looked to bounce back from a heart-breaking loss in Week 3. It was all Ramen defense as the NY Freemasons shot a team season worst 23% from the field while giving up the ball 14 times. The Ramen defense held the Freemasons to a season low 36 pts.
