TDL Spring 2016 Week 5 Results

NY Freemasons (2-3) 54
NYC Gritty Committee (2-3) 67
Thu (5/5) 6:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mark Lee (NGC) 28 pts, 3 reb

RECAP: NYC Gritty just added a new wrinkle that might get that back into playoff contention, a 3/4 court zone trap. The Freemasons never could figure it out and trailed by 32 pts at one point in this game. But traps can be tiring, and FRE to its credit, never stopped playing, and put up a huge comeback to get it to this margin. If there’s one weakness to NGC’s trap so far, it’s eventual fatigue, a problem for NGC all season.

NY Dynasty (2-3) 48
Spaghetti Ramen (3-2) 57
Thu (5/5) 7:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Leuis Ng (SPR) 18 pts, 8 reb, 7 ast

RECAP: With the division’s leading scorer (G) Ren Hsieh out of the lineup with an elbow injury it was already an uphill climb for NY Dynasty, but Spaghetti Ramen came with their usual tough defense and an organized offensive attack that never really gave DYN a chance, despite never putting too much distance on the scoreboard. SPR (F) Mark Hahn put up a signature defensive effort with 6 steals.

Make BDL Great Again (1-4) 49
Skillshare (3-2) 55
Thu (5/5) 8:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Scott Sullivan (SKL) 15 pts, 9 reb

RECAP: Skillshare got off to a strong start with (G) Michael Hamane scoring its first 8 pts, but they would hit a drought in the 3rd qtr to let Ball Don’t Lie back in it. There were moments when it seemed like BDL might pull off another miracle comeback like they did last week, but the steady of play SKL (F) Scott Sullivan on the boards and offensively, helped to hold off a short-handed BDL that ran out of gas. (F) Rondeep Dutta was strong in his BDL debut.

Doris From Rego Park (3-2) 42
Guard Me Maybe (4-1) 70
Thu (5/5) 9:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jin Bae Kim (GMM) 15 pts, 5 reb

RECAP: Doris From Rego Park also missed a key player in the lineup, (F) Billy Katz. Even more than his 15 pts, 11 reb a game, they missed his energy. Guard Me Maybe took control of this game early and never let up. GMM (F) Jin Bae Kim has been the key to their rise to no. 1. His energy on both sides of the ball fuels the entire team, and his slashing ability has been one of a kind this season. Nobody has found a way to keep him out of the paint so far.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 4 Results

Guard Me Maybe (3-1) 66
NY Dynasty (2-2) 56
Thu (4/28) 6:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jin Bae Kim (GMM) 27 pts, 11 reb

RECAP: It was a shootout from the start, even though NY Dynasty had to play the 1st quarter with only 4 players on the court. But DYN (G) Ren Hsieh kept them in it with a season-high 35 pts. But it wasn’t enough DYN had no answer for GMM (F) Jin Bae Kim, who got it going early with athletic moves to the basket and (G) Tommy Wong backing him up from outside. The duo never let up, securing a big win.

Doris From Rego Park (3-1) 61
Skillshare (2-2) 58
Thu (4/28) 7:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: David Weiss (DOR) 15 pts, 4 ast

RECAP: If you wanted parity in this division, you got it. Doris didn’t look good in their opener but they have bounced back well since, winning 3 straight. Skillshare has all the tools to make a title run, but they’ve dropped a couple games down at the wire. They could’ve just as easily been 4-0. But in this one, Doris made all the big shots down the stretch to pull out back and forth game that came down to the final shot.

NY Freemasons (2-2) 43
Spaghetti Ramen (2-2) 38
Thu (4/28) 8:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Neil Dumadag (FRE) 15 pts, 8 reb

RECAP: The Freemasons don’t make it look very pretty, but they’ve evened up their record at 2-2 by holding teams to a league best 43.8 ppg. That is 8.5 ppg better than anyone else. FRE was aggressive attacking the basket, and playing the passing lanes. And eventually, Spaghetti Ramen lost the handle on this one. SPR has been a little uneven this season, but this was still a winnable game for them. They’ll have a chance to bounce back next week vs 2-2 NY Dynasty.

Make BDL Great Again (1-3) 68
NYC Gritty Committee (1-3) 64
Thu (4/28) 9:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Tran Truong (BDL) 26 pts, 7 3FGs

RECAP: What a game, maybe the best regular season game we’ll see this spring. BDL started okay, but Gritty quickly took over as (G) Mark Lee caught fire from 3, hitting 4 straight. With (C) Vic Chia also playing well, NGC led by as much as 16 pts. Then BDL turned it around, forced TOs, and got out in transition. This freed (G) Tran Truong to unleash a firestorm of 3FGs to get back within single digits. When NGC turned their attention on him, (G) Paul Shen and (G) Jae Kim started knocking them down. (G) Nelson Yu and (C) Dan Tak put the finishing touches with a dagger 3 from Yu and a key late-game block from Tak that held off a Gritty team that ran out of gas.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 3 Results (3rd Division)

Doris From Rego Park (2-1) 54
NY Freemasons (1-2) 49
Thursday, April 21, 6:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Billy Katz (DOR) 16 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals

Doris jumped out to the early lead with (F) Billy Katz‘s high energy play, but the Freemasons quickly recovered in the 2nd quarter with solid scoring from (F) Thomas Chen. They also found a match-up they could exploit with (F) Albert Hei. Doris struggled with Hei’s speed and length, but ultimately, the made up for it by outworking FRE 47-27 on the glass. Doris held off the Freemasons with an 18-point 4th quarter .

NY Dynasty (2-1) 57
Skillshare (2-1) 68
Thursday, April 21, 7:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Scott Sullivan (SKL) 19 points, 15 rebounds, 1 assist

Skillshare won their second in a row by starting strong early. NY Dynasty struggled to score against SKL’s stout defense, but settled in during the middle quarters. Dynasty’s 3rd quarter run got them within 7 points, but Skillshare’s dominance on the boards kept DYN from ever truly contesting the result. SKL’s top two rebounders, (F) Scott Sullivan (15) and (G) Elliot Curtis (13) had as many combined  rebounds as the entire DYN team.

NYC Gritty Committee (1-2) 55
Spaghetti Ramen (2-1) 65
Thursday, April 21, 8:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Leuis Ng (SPR) 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assist

NYC Gritty Committee (G) Mark Lee scored a season-high 19 points, and (G) Joey Lee continued his double-digit scoring streak with 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome 19 turnovers for NGC as a team. And Spaghetti Ramen is one of the best teams in the league at taking advantage of turnovers by scoring out in transition. (G) Leuis Ng once again led SPR with 19 points.

Guard Me Maybe (2-1) 62
Make BDL Great Again (0-3) 54
Thursday, April 21, 9:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Kento Kato (GMM) 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists

(G) Tommy Wong got his Guard Me Maybe team off to a great start with four early 3FGs, bouncing back from a career-worst 1-18 performance in his last outing. (G) Kento Kato also bounced back from last week’s disaster by closing the game late with key drives and pretty finishes at the rim. Still, BDL was right there in this game throughout, even after having to shift (C) Dan Tak out to the perimeter to guard Wong in the 2nd half. They just couldn’t find anyone to close out the game the way Kento did for GMM. It was a missed opportunity for BDL.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 3 Results (2nd Division)

Flying Fairies (1-0) 52
Raptors (0-3) 46
Sunday, April 17, 12:00pm at Graphics HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Kevin Quach (FLY) 14 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assist

The Raptors’ 12 3FGs kept them in this game, but they struggled to contend with the bigger Flying Faries’ roster, especially with (F) Garth Grillo out of the line-up. And eventually the Fairies wore the Raps down. FLY (F) Kevin Quach led his team with 14 points, 9 rebounds. RAP (G) James Han and (F) Seung Lim both finished with 20 points.

Goat Herders (0-3) 67
Supreme Team (1-1) 79
Sunday, April 17, 12:00pm at Graphics HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Ryan Kim (SUP) 36 points, 8 3FGs, 4 rebounds

Supreme Team captain (G) Ryan Kim wasn’t in a zone, he was on another planet, he was speaking in tongues, he was an astral projection, he was Neo in the Matrix. The man could not miss, going 8-10 from behind the arc before missing a couple late to keep some veneer of mortality. Needless to say his 36 points and 8 threes were career-highs. And they won the game to boot.

Gritty FOB City (2-1) 56
TX Thunder (1-1) 54
Sunday, April 17, 1:30pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: David Ri (FOB) 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists

The Thunder controlled this game for most of three quarters. But in the 3rd, FOB City started to make its run and the Thunder shots stopped falling. FOB (F) David Ri led the way with a game-high 17 points in the comeback win. THU (G) Leuis Ng finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds.

Dirk Digglers (3-0) 70
Flying Fairies (2-0) 42
Sunday, April 17, 2:00pm at Graphics HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Eric Kim (DRK) 15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists

After winning their season opener earlier in the day, the Flying Fairies seemed to run out of gas in the second leg of their double-header. Meanwhile, the Dirk Digglers keep their win streak going with their third straight decision. There’s no secret here, it’s the same personnel as last season, they’re just playing a whole lot better, led by (G) Eric Kim who looks more comfortable than ever running this team.

No Fly Zone OG (1-2) 55
TAP NY (1-2) 61
Sunday, April 17, 3:30pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: John Hsu (TAP) 20 points, 14 rebounds, 1 block

TAP NY dismantled a No Fly Zone team once again playing short-handed with no bigs. New TAP addition (C) Jordan Carr dominated early in the paint, forcing NFZ to double him. That opened up the 3-pt line for TAP and (G) John Hsu led the way with four 3FGs. They led by as much as 19 points. But NFZ surged back, led by a 24-point 2nd half from (G) Ren Hsieh. They got within one possession, but key baskets from Carr  and Hsu held off NFZ in crunch time.

Sex Panthers (1-2) 58
Splappa (3-0) 71
Sunday, April 17, 5:00pm at Graphics HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Derek Lu (SPL) 31 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists

The early struggles that Splappa faced as a team are long behind them now. This isn’t a change in personnel so much as key players actually being there. (F) Pierre Riddle has been as dominant as we predicted he would be. And that has opened everything up for (G) Caleb Lui and (G) Derek Lu who finished with a season-high 31 points. The Sex Panthers, on the other hand, looked sluggish again, dropping their second game in a row, something they didn’t do all last season.

Teal Curtain (3-0) 52
Wolverines (0-2) 42
Sunday, April 17, 5:30pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Alex Field (TEA) 14 points, 2 rebounds, 7 steals

Teal Curtain may be new to this league, but they certainly aren’t new to each other. This is their third straight win, and they haven’t exactly been playing marshmallows. To date, they have knocked off a semifinal team (WOL) from last season’s playoffs, and the eventual champion (BSH). They’re quickly starting to look like the team to beat in the Western Conference.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 2 Results [3rd Division]

Doris From Rego Park (1-1) 63
Spaghetti Ramen (1-1) 46
Thursday, April 14, 6:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Billy Katz (DOR) 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals

Doris From Rego Park (F) Billy Katz had a solid debut last week, logging a double-double, and he added to that performance in Week 2 with a game-high 17 points in a convincing bounce back win over Spaghetti Ramen. Veteran SPR (G) Leuis Ng had an uncharacteristically bad shooting night, and his team didn’t fare much better shooting a season-low 27%.

Make BDL Great Again (0-2) 46
NY Dynasty (2-0) 55
Thursday, April 14, 7:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Ren Hsieh (DYN) 21 points, 3 rebounds 4 assists

Ball Don’t Lie started the game on fire, making 5-7 1st half 3FGs while NY Dynasty (G) Ren Hsieh started just 1-8 from the field with his team playing short-handed. But he quickly turned it around, hitting 5 of his next 8, and received a welcome sight when (F) Steve Song finally arrived to help seal their second win of the season.

NYC Gritty Committee (1-1) 54
Skillshare (1-1) 56
Thursday, April 14, 8:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Elliot Curtis (SKL) 23 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists

This is a game that NYC Gritty is gonna want back. They controlled the game throughout, leading by double digits in the 3rd quarter, but (G) Elliott Curtis and Skillshare kept inching back into it. And in the 4th quarter, they got hot and took the lead. Gritty recovered enough to have a shot to win it in the final seconds, but NGC (F) Jiwon Kim‘s jumper was just off the mark.

Guard Me Maybe (1-1) 35
NY Freemasons (1-1) 44
Thursday, April 14, 9:45pm at MLK HS Box Score
Player of the Game: Neil Dumadag (FRE) 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals

Guard Me Maybe actually started strong, going up 17-9 in the 1st quarter, pushing toward what seemed to be another blowout win. But in the 2nd half, the shots just stopped falling. They scored only 1 point in the 3rd quarter, a franchise-low mark. (G) Tommy Wong shot just 1-18 FGs, a career worst. GMM finished shooting 21% from the field in a disaster. And give it up to the Freemasons for making the plays down the stretch to hold onto the win.
