TDL Spring 2016 Playoffs Results (1st Round)

(8) Tim Nubina 74
(9) Boomtown 55
Wed (6/1) 6:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: D. Stanojevic (TIM) 24 pts, 9 reb

RECAP: The three-point field goal was the main factor of this game. Tim Nubina was making them and Boomtown was not. This one got a little chippy late, but Nubina used their size to effectively in the middle quarters when BOO had to overextend their defense to cover the three.

(3) Sal Team 6 62
(6) Guard Me Maybe 72
Wed (6/1) 7:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ian Yu (GMM) 20 pts, 9 reb

RECAP: Championship hopefuls Sal Team 6 had to play short-handed, and Guard Me Maybe took full advantage. (G) Ian Yu and (F) Askia Davis were aggressive early and making shots. SAL wasn’t ready for GMM’s energy and never really recovered.

(2) NY Dynasty 65
(7) NYK Spartans 53
Wed (6/1) 8:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: F. Simpson (DYN) 25 pts, 4 reb

RECAP: NY Dynasty (F) Fred Simpson was just in beast mode all game. He was unyielding, hustling for every ball, red hot from every spot on the floor. It took the entire Spartans team to stop him, and when they did, he just dumped the ball off to open DYN teammates. SPA did their best, but DYN had too many weapons.

(4) That 70s Team 52
(5) Free Agents 64
Wed (6/1) 9:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: M. Blakely (FAS) 23 pts, 8 reb

RECAP: For one of Premier’s biggest lineups, That 70s Team sure looked small in this one. 70S struggled offensively and did a lot of walking on defense. The Free Agents were always running, no matter what, trying to find an quick, easy basket. If not for some key shots by 70S (F) Dee Ferguson, this would have been a blowout.

(1) Meta World War 60
(8) Tim Nubina 41
Thu (6/2) 8:00pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: S. Arasmo (MWW) 26 pts, 6 reb

RECAP: Both teams had just 5 available players, but it was Tim Nubina with the obvious size advantage. They used it well in 1st quarter to take an early lead, but eventually, Meta World War took over the tempo and with it, control of this game. TIM could not contain MWW (G) Shamel Arasmo‘s speed. And despite their size, TIM mostly settled for 3FGs, shooting 29 and making just 5. It was a risky formula all season, and it ends with a 1st rd exit. Defending champs MWW move on to the semis.

TDL Spring 2016 Playoff Preview (1st Round)

(3) SKILLSHARE vs (6) NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE

Comments Team Score Team Comments
Skillshare has almost all the pieces to make a deep playoff run: stand out guard play, size, and shooting. The only thing missing is a lot of exp playing together. They do have a full season under their belt now, but not in the playoffs. (G) Elliot Curtis and (G) Michael Hamane will lead the way from the backcourt. (F) Scott Sullivan and (C) Anthony Hull make this as tough a Top 4 as any in D-3.
SKL
4-3

65-62

NGC
2-5
The tricky part about NYC Gritty Committee is that they are actually a very good team in the playoffs. They just tend to underachieve in the regular season. They too have stand out guard play, size, and shooting. Sometimes. If (F) Steve Chung is hitting from three, they can look unstoppable. (G) Mark Lee will bring the business every game, they’re isn’t a more aggressive scorer in D-3.
KEY PLAYER: (G) ELLIOT CURTIS
Curtis was 2nd in the league in scoring despite being a facilitator first for this team. That means that his shots are selective and efficient. There are lot of weapons on SKL but everything runs through Curtis.
KEY PLAYER: (G) MARK LEE
The veteran Lee doesn’t have the same athleticism he used to, but it has made him a more patient scorer. He can do it from any spot on the floor: driving, in the post, and if he gets it going from 3, look out.

(4) NY DYNASTY vs (5) MAKE BDL GREAT AGAIN

Comments Team Score Team Comments
The NY Dynasty is a two-pronged attack led by (G) Ren Hsieh from the perimeter and (C) Steve Song in the paint. Hsieh led the league in scoring this season, but Song is no slouch as a playmaker from the pivot. They also have a number of role players who can pick it up offensively, too. But this is still a limited offense, they’re best when they’re focused on defense down the stretch of games.
DYN
4-3

55-48

franchise_logo_BDL
BDL
3-4
Somehow Make BDL Great Again has found ways to win just enough all season to get here. They have an indefatigable spirit, even if they aren’t exactly tireless. The offense runs through (G) Tran Truong, if he’s hot from three, they will have chances because he will let it fly all game. The D is anchored by former Wat Misaka winner (C) Dan Tak. Nobody goes harder on the defensive end.
KEY PLAYER: (G) REN HSIEH
Hsieh can create off the bounce and score inside and out, but at 38 yo, he can run out of gas at times. He’s best when his 3FGs are falling.
thumb_Ren_Hsieh thumb_Dan_Tak KEY PLAYER: (C) DAN TAK
Tak was D-3’s top shot-blocker and 2nd leading rebounder. When he’s on, he can change the tenor of a game by shutting down the paint.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 8 Results

Dirk Digglers (6-0) 67
No Fly Zone OG (1-6) 45
Sun (5/22) 2:00pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Tim Zhang (DRK) 22 pts, 9 reb

RECAP: This just hasn’t been No Fly Zone’s season, and they will miss the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history. It has, on the other hand, been every bit as much the Dirk Digglers’ season. Few teams (if any) are playing as cohesively on offense.

Ball So Hard (5-1) 62
Splappa (4-2) 39
Sat (5/22) 3:00pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jerry Ho (BSH) 20 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: No (G) Caleb Lui and (F) Derek Lu for Splappa meant (G) Kevin Lee and (F) Pierre Riddle were left to take this slap in the face on their own. Lui and Lu should owe them one for this. Ball So Hard basically messed around and won by 23. (F) Jerry Ho led the way with 20 pts on 6 3FGs.

Raptors (1-5) 60
Wolverines (3-4) 70
Sun (5/22) 5:00pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mike Meng (WOL) 21 pts, 11 reb

RECAP: Raptors (G) James Han showed up late but when finally made it, he sure helped make a game out of this one with a season-high 25 pts. RAP (F) Alvin Kong also chipped in 17 pts, 10 reb. But ultimately, RAP couldn’t keep Wolverines (C) Mike Meng and (F) Nick Liveris in check as the duo combined for 35 pts, 21 reb. But give it up for WOL (G) Anthony Liveris who topped them all with 13 boards.

Sex Panthers (4-3) 62
Supreme Team (5-1) 64
Sun (5/22) 6:00pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ryan Kim (SUP) 21 pts, 5 3FGs

RECAP: The game of the season. Sex Panthers jumped out to an early 27-11 lead, but Supreme Team never let up. Playing with their signature intensity, they went into half time down 32-25. SXP held serve in the 3rd qtr, leading by as much as 20 before SUP came back again. In the 4th qtr, the floodgates finally opened as SUP picked apart SXP’s zone, first at the high-post, then with three (G) Ryan Kim 3FGs in the final minutes that gave SUP the lead. SXP had chances to make up the difference, but the shots just didn’t fall.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 7 Power Rankings

Western Conference

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a)
BSH
4-1 Until they are unseeded as the defending champs, they will get the benefit of the doubt here. Ball So Hard‘s front court is arguably the toughest in D-2. Their back court may not put up the big numbers, but they have come through time and time again. This is the team to beat.
(n/a) SUP 4-1 What a season for the Supreme Team. Tired of missing the playoffs, SUP went out and picked up two key players, (G) Jeff Syham and (C) Max Choi. The turnaround has been fast. Syham has ably run the team, and having another Choi brother is always a good thing. And now, SUP has already clinched their first franchise playoff bid.
(n/a) TEA 4-2 When the dust settles, the Teal Curtain will be the top contender out of the Western Conference to challenge BSH. They’re scrappy on D, they have more team height than any other team with solid back court play, and (F) Noah Scovronick is simply unstoppable in the paint in this division. This is a team built for playoff success.
(n/a) FOB 3-3 Gritty FOB City has been here time and again, a middle of the pack team with plenty of playoff experience. All they need to do is get hot to make some noise. If they can lock in a playoff spot. Truth is, they haven’t been dangerous very often this season, but (C) Victor Chia  has been putting up one of his best career seasons.
(n/a) THU 2-3 Somewhat like FOB, this is a veteran team that has found itself in the middle of the pack, but they’re not exactly used to this. The TX Thunder are perennial contenders, but this season has had some bumps in the road. Still, if they can just make the playoffs, they’re always a threat to get it together for a deep post-season run.
(n/a) WOL 2-4 The Wolverines will have to win and hope for the best (meaning hope the THU lose out). This has always been a team that has showed their best work in the post-season. With their size and focus on defense, they are well suited for the playoffs, but the regular season hasn’t gone their way often this time around.
(n/a) GOA 0-6 It’s been a lost season for the Goat Herders who never quite got it all together. They’ve had scoring, and some spurts of defense, but never all at once, and never enough to get a win. They have one more chance to at least get a mark in the win column.

Eastern Conference

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) DRK 5-0 The Dirk Digglers are the surprise team of the season, even with their appearance in the championship last season. With no roster additions, this team became a dominant force this spring, plowing their way back to another title shot. And it’s not as if it’s one or two players dominating, this is a team possessed. They simply find a way to win.
(n/a) SPL 4-1 If it weren’t for DRK, then Splappa might be the surprise team of the East. After failing to make the playoffs last season, they got it together this spring and have been the winning team that was expected of them. (F) Pierre Riddle is unstoppable on the boards and (G) Caleb Lui and (G) Derek Lu is as tough a back court as any in D-2.
(n/a) SXP 4-2 When the Sex Panthers are bad, they look their age, when they’re good, they look too good. No other legit D-2 team in history has scored 99 pts in a game, and that’s exactly what SXP did last week vs NFZ. When they are on their game, and not their age, this team is unbeatable. They might still be the best contender out of the East to beat BSH.
(n/a) FLY 3-2 If the Flying Fairies can lock in their playoff spot, they can make some noise. They have size, experience, and a deep roster. If they make a strong commitment to defense, they have the potential to pull off some upsets. But (F) Kevin Quach will have to make it to games, and play better than he has.
(n/a) RAP 1-4 Poor play in the back line of the East has left this last playoff spot wide open for anyone who wants it. The Raptors could very well take it, and as they showed last season, they are very capable of knocking off a top seeded team when they get hot. If they win, they’ll get another chance.
(n/a) TAP 1-4 It’s been a weird season for TAP NY, they just haven’t played like the team we’ve gotten used to. But for whatever reason that may be, they still have a chance to win out and get a playoff spot. (C) Jordan Carr has been a great add, but (G) Will Chu and (G) John Hsu‘s combined ppg it the lowest it’s been in what seems like several seasons.
(n/a) NFZ 1-5 Injuries, age, roster inconsistency, it’s all added up to a lost season for No Fly Zone OG this season. It hasn’t been pretty, while putting up a decent 52.5 ppg, they’ve given up a league-high 68 ppg.

(n/a)
SKW
4-1 SK War Dog took a surprising loss to HON in which they finally looked their age. (G) “Vegas” Dave Wong hasn’t been himself this season, but SKW nevertheless bounced back as we expected. Both (G) Kash Miah and (G) Pat Youreneff are playing at an MVP level right now.
(n/a) HON 4-2 With (G) Alex Tsay back in the fold, and the addition of (F) Zach Moretti to bolster their defensive back-line, this is starting to look like a true Honey Badgers type of roster. Moretti has, in fact, been their most consistent scorer. They’ve been a little uneven offensively, but when they’re good, they’re very good. Just ask SKW.
(n/a) SHA 4-2 Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out is kind of like San Francisco Giants. They bounce back strong after a disappointing season, usually winning a title. This would be that season. Despite a 2-2 start, SHA has won their last two straight (one by forfeit) to lock in their playoff spot. The lineups have been thin, but at full strength, this team is still a contender.
(n/a) LMA 3-2 An up-and-coming franchise, Lace’O My Aso made a big jump last season by making their first post-season. Now, with (G) Mathew Joshy back in the lineup, they’re looking to improve on that showing. (F) Kyle Jose has been a solid addition, solidifying their front-court. Jose has been LMA’s best rebounder all season.
(n/a) LIF 3-3 Let It Fly has looked pretty good at times this season, and the big reason, of course, is the addition of (F/C) Shawn Bailey. Tall, agile, long as hell, and versatile, Bailey can do whatever LIF needs him to do. But what he needs from his team, if LIF is really going to lock down a playoff spot, is more consistent perimeter shooting to open up his lanes.
(n/a) JAM 2-3 It seems like the same story every season, Space Jam is inscrutable. You just never know what you’re gonna get. They’re usually good enough to make it to the playoffs, and (G) Jason Fulford is a gamer, but an inconsistent roster gives JAM no continuity from game to game.
(n/a) X1 2-4 Well, it’s the same old story for X1, they just don’t have enough consistent offense. Individually, each player has put up a good game or two, but 45 ppg isn’t going to cut it. With that said, they are headed in the right direction, and (C) Michael Boord is really starting to look like a franchise cornerstone. One more piece might do it.
(n/a) LOB 0-5 Another tough season for L.O.B., they wanted to get at least one win this season–and they still have two chances to do so–but the struggle has been very real, scoring a league-low 37 ppg, not to mention they have shot just 22% from the field as a team.

Eastern Conference

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a) NFZ 6-0 They’re the only undefeated team remaining this season and with one more win, No Fly Zone will be the first team in this division to go back-to-back undefeated regular seasons. Of course, last season, that didn’t mean a title. As well as (F) Michael Reding and (F) David Farnham have played, it’s nothing without the championship.
(n/a) ASN 4-2 The Asphalt Ninjas started strong and looked early on to be maybe the only team that could knock off NFZ, but they haven’t had their full roster in the past few weeks, and that’s resulted in them winning just 1 out of their last 3 games. They’re off to NACBAIT Nationals over Memorial Day weekend, so the roster could get even thinner.
(n/a) FVG 4-2 The same holds true for Financial Ventures Group, key players will be going to NACBAIT. It’s a war of attrition, but if they can survive this team is a dark horse to win the title. (F) Kev Chang has been playing MVP ball all season, carrying FVG for stretches over this season. They’ll have a chance to beat NFZ in the season finale.
(n/a) FAS 3-2 Free Agents have been low key good this season, living and dying on the 3. Only NFZ has shot and made more. But when (G) David Chu has the 3 going, and the offense is clicking, they have a lot of weapons. This team could be in for a few upsets come playoff time.
(n/a) JAY 2-3 It’s been an up and down season for this rookie franchise, but Jay’s Angels has some solid talent that might be able to make some noise if they can make the playoffs. (F) Johnny Spillane has been solid and consistent, but there may not be a more athletic and active guard in D-1 than (G) Sal Nasser. This guy has motor to spare.
(n/a) SKK 2-3 There may not be a more confounding team in the league this season than Shawn Kemp’s Kids. When they’re good, they’re really good, but when they’re bad, they stink. (C) Graham Diamond gives them the size they’d been missing, but shooting has been erratic. As always, though, if they can make the playoffs, they’ll always be a tough out.
(n/a) RAR 2-4 The Raining Rosebuds has fielded more players this season than any other, and when you have no “salary cap restrictions” you can do that, but they’ve never gotten into any kind of rhythm as a team. (G) Miguel Melbourne has been solid when present, as has (F) Mitch Moxley, but again, continuity is RAR’s biggest weakness.
(n/a) TOP 0-5 The Top Stars are not without talent. Sometimes they’re on the brink of a breakthrough, and then other seasons end up like this. It’s been a tough 5 games and attendance has been an issue. One of these seasons, though, we fully expect the TOP to make title run.
