TDL Spring 2016 Week 5 Results

Boomtown (2-1) 55
Guard Me Maybe (2-2) 66
Wed (5/11) 6:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Askia Davis (GMM) 20 pts, 12 reb

RECAP: The early game of the night often goes to the team who can get enough players on the floor. Boomtown was short-handed, as could be expected, but Guard Me Maybe came in with a full roster, and just overwhelmed BOO in the 2nd half. It was a solid effort all around for GMM, but if BOO can take some silver lining out of this loss, (F) Jake Moreno finished with 25 pts in his second game back in the lineup.

NYK Spartans (1-2) 55
That 70s Team (2-1) 53
Wed (5/11) 7:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ace Watana. (NYK) 19 pts, 6 3FGs

RECAP: When That 70s Team is in sync, they look unbeatable, but then they have games like these when no one looks like they’re on the same page. That left the door open for the Spartans, who never quit in any game, to come in and steal this win. Big time shooting from NYK (G) Ace Watanasuparp helped his Spartans team get their first win of the season.

NY Dynasty (3-1) 73
Tim Nubina (2-2) 53
Wed (5/11) 8:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Fred Simpson (DYN) 19 pts, 5 stl

RECAP: Both teams played dead even in the 1st half, but NY Dynasty noticeably upped their defensive intensity in the 2nd. Even with former Fordham (F) Chris Bethel arriving late for Tim Nubina, Dynasty held their ground, turning TIM’s missed shots and turnovers into easy finishes in transition. DYN (F) Fred Simpson has been the catalyst since joining the team two weeks ago. He is the perimeter defender they’ve been missing.

Meta World War (0-4) 65
Sal Team 6 (3-1) 53
Wed (5/11) 9:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Chaz Thomas (MWW) 19 pts, 7 stl

RECAP: Meta World War showed up with just four roster players, but picked up a sub to make 5. It was just enough to knock off Sal Team 6 side that struggled with their perimeter shooting for most of the night, all except for (F) Parker McClelland that is, who was knock down. It was McClelland who gave them the push to try and steal this one late, but key buckets in the paint by (F) Chaz Thomas and (C) Stedford McCleod helped MWW close this one out.

TDL Spring 2016 Power Rankings

Rank Team Record Comments
1 (N/A) GMM 4-1 Guard Me Maybe may not be the best defensive team in the league, but they have enough firepower to make up for it, scoring a league best 62.8 ppg. (G) Kento Kato and (G) Tommy Wong are a formidable backcourt, and they have great hustle players up and down the roster, but the x-factor has been (F) Jin Bae Kim‘s all-around effective play.
2 (N/A) DOR 3-2 Despite their surprising blowout loss to GMM, Doris From Rego Park has looked like a contender in most games this season. They are the opposite of GMM in many ways. Not a high-scoring team, but they dig in on defense every possession. (G) David Weiss and rookie (F) Billy Katz both lead by example.
3 (N/A) SPR 3-2 This is a veteran team with multiple championships under their belt so no matter their record, Spaghetti Ramen is always a contender. Veteran (G) Leuis Ng will put his team in position to win games, and (F) Mark Hahn has been returning to Defensive MVP form with every game.
4 (N/A) SKL 3-2 Skillshare also comes with a very strong backcourt with (G) Elliot Curtis and (G) Michael Hamane leading the way. They’re also the league’s biggest team with (F) Scott Sullivan and (C) Anthony Hull in the front-court. At full strength, this team is as much a contender as any of the aforementioned. Their only losses have really only come in short-handed games.
5 (N/A) NGC 2-3 Similar to SPR, NYC Gritty Committee is a veteran team with plenty of pedigree and titles. As they’ve gotten older, they’ve just got off to slower starts. But now they’re starting to take shape. (G) Mark Lee is capable of 25 ppg and (C) Victor Chia is dominating the paint this season. Never a deep team, they tend to run out of gas late in games, but if they make the playoffs, this is again, another contender.
6 (N/A) DYN 2-3 Depth has been a major problem for the NY Dynasty as well. They may have given away two losses for lack of a bench. (G) Ren Hsieh is leading the league in scoring, but at 38 years old, that’s probably not a good sign. Rookie (C) Steve Song has been huge in his first season, fitting right in with DYN. They just need a little more help to get over the hump.
7 (N/A) FRE 2-3 The NY Freemasons are a mercurial team. They bring the defense in every game, but their offense is so erratic, they sometimes make you wonder if it’s the same team showing up every week. After inching toward a playoff spot, they were embarrassed by NGC last week, and knocked back to outsider status. They’ll practically have to win out to get in now.
8 (N/A) BDL 1-4 Truth be told, Make BDL Great Again probably already won their NBA Finals/Super Bowl/World Series already with that incredible comeback win over NGC. They’ll have to win out and hope for the best for a playoff spot, but for this team–easily the oldest in the league, with the most children–has done pretty well for itself this season, competing in every game.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 6 Results

TX Thunder (2-3) 37
Supreme Team (4-1) 39
Sun (5/8) 1:30pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jeff Syham (SUP) 15 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: After this decision, it’s not clear who should feel better. Supreme Team has had a big run, and this is the first team they’ve beaten this season with championship pedigree. They gutted out a tough win down the wire. On the other hand, the Thunder had a chance to win this while playing without two key starters, former MVP (G) Leuis Ng and (F) Kenneth Van

Gritty FOB City (2-3) 42
Wolverines (1-4) OT 43
Sun (5/8) 2:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: A. Liveris (WOL) 13 pts, 5 ast, 4 stl

RECAP: Neither team saw particularly good shooting, but the Wolverines seemed to control this game until FOB City (G) Brent Morita led his team on a 11-0 run in the 4th qtr to take the lead. It took a big three from WOL (C) Mike Meng to force OT. Gritty would score first but (G) Anthony Liveris go-ahead 3FG gave WOL the 1-pt win in a narrow escape.

Ball So Hard (3-2) 57
Goat Herders (2-2) 42
Sun (5/8) 3:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: S. Salar (BSH) 20 pts, 12 reb

RECAP: The truth is, the Goat Herders have offense. Even without (C) Gus Konidas in the lineup, they got 19 pts out of (F) Pete Tsevdos. But defensively, they’ve struggled all season. And with frustration on the defensive end, forced shots on offense tend to go up. Ball So Hard (F) Sherwin Salar ate up GOA’s defense inside and out. With balanced scoring down the rest of the roster, this was easy pickings.

Raptors (1-3) 38
Splappa (4-0) 66
Sun (5/8) 3:30pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Derek Lu (SPL) 20 pts, 9 reb, 7 ast

RECAP: Before the Raptors even knew what hit them, Splappa was leading 41-13 at the half. But, even midway through the 2nd qtr, it wasn’t that bad. RAP didn’t look far off, but 11 1st half TOs later and it was over. Splappa has become a team you can’t give away possessions, and RAP did so freely with just flat out poor decision-making. SPL gave 13 TOs back in the 2nd half, but it was already over by then.

Dirk Digglers (3-2) 76
TAP NY (2-2) 50
Sun (5/8) 4:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jim Liu (DRK) 18 pts, 7 reb, 1 stl

RECAP: If you’re not ready to play early on with the Dirk Digglers, get ready for a long day ahead. TAP found out the hard way, trailing 41-23 by halftime. Even after DRK (G) Eric Kim going down in the 3rd qtr, the Digglers had more than enough left to dispatch a TAP NY team that has struggled this season.

Flying Fairies (4-1) 48
Sex Panthers (2-2) 67
Sun (5/8) 6:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Chris Di (SXP) 25 pts, 10 reb, 2 stl

RECAP: The Sex Panthers got off to a fast start and that always helps this veteran squad. They’re one of the best teams in the league playing with a lead. Flying Fairies never got anything going until the 2nd half. But they never had an answer for (F) Chris Di in the paint, putting a vintage display of scoring efficiency.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 6 Results

Let It Fly (3-3) 49
Lace’O My Aso (3-2) 61
Sun (5/8) 11:00am at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Matt Joshy (LMA) 17 pts, 6 ast

RECAP: Let It Fly jumped out to the early lead 20-17 over Lace’O My Aso, but with (G) Matt Joshy back in the lineup to give them a perimeter threat they had missed, they started to pick apart LIF in the 2nd qtr. After a string of missed shots in the 2nd half, LIF just couldn’t bounce back to make this one a game.

Raining Rosebuds (2-3) W
Financial Ventures (4-2) L
Sun (5/8) 12:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: N/A

RECAP: Forfeit.

Shawn Kemp’s Kids (2-4) 50
Free Agents (2-3) 54
Sun (5/8) 1:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: David Chu (FAS) 22 pts, 6 3FGs

RECAP: The Agents seemed to control this one throughout, but they had no answer for SKK (C) Graham Diamond who has posted back-to-back huge numbers in their past two games. But with big efforts from (G) David Chu and (F) Sekani Thompson, FAS found a way to hold off the Kids and keep their playoff hopes alive.

X1 (2-3) 49
SK War Dog (4-1) 61
Sun (5/8) 2:30pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Kash Miah (SKW) 24 pts, 4 3FGs

RECAP: X1’s aggressive defense held SK War Dog to just 7 pts in the opening quarter, but (G) Kash Miah and Co. figured out a way around it, by drawing fouls and getting to the FT line. Miah scored 16 straight points in the 2nd quarter to help SKW take control of this game. With X1’s defense on its heels, it was all War Dog the rest of the way despite solid offense from X1 in the 2nd half.

Shawty Likes the Way (3-2) W
L.O.B. (0-5) L
Sun (5/8) 4:30pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: N/A

RECAP: Forfeit.

Honey Badgers (4-2) 58
Space Jam (2-3) 49
Sun (5/8) 5:00pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Z. Moretti (HON) 20 pts, 14 reb

RECAP: This was a blowout entering the 4th qtr with the Honey Badgers leading Space Jam 53-30, but JAM went on a 17-0 run to start the 4th to get within two possessions, but the short handed Badgers had enough in the tank to hold off JAM even with (G) Will Chu shooting 1-12 from the field.

Jay’s Angels (2-3) 43
No Fly Zone (5-0) 63
Sun (5/8) 5:30pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: S. Ahmed (NFZ) 20 pts, 6 3FGs

RECAP: Jay’s Angels did a solid job of keeping No Fly Zone out of the paint in the 1st half, and they were right there, even without (F) Johnny Spillane in the lineup. But (F) Saleem Ahmed was on fire from three, and eventually, so was (F) Mike Reding. With NFZ ramping up their D in the 2nd half, JAY just couldn’t keep pace. Not having Spillane hurt here, as his size could have been a mismatch vs NFZ’s small ball approach.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 5 Results

NY Freemasons (2-3) 54
NYC Gritty Committee (2-3) 67
Thu (5/5) 6:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mark Lee (NGC) 28 pts, 3 reb

RECAP: NYC Gritty just added a new wrinkle that might get that back into playoff contention, a 3/4 court zone trap. The Freemasons never could figure it out and trailed by 32 pts at one point in this game. But traps can be tiring, and FRE to its credit, never stopped playing, and put up a huge comeback to get it to this margin. If there’s one weakness to NGC’s trap so far, it’s eventual fatigue, a problem for NGC all season.

NY Dynasty (2-3) 48
Spaghetti Ramen (3-2) 57
Thu (5/5) 7:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Leuis Ng (SPR) 18 pts, 8 reb, 7 ast

RECAP: With the division’s leading scorer (G) Ren Hsieh out of the lineup with an elbow injury it was already an uphill climb for NY Dynasty, but Spaghetti Ramen came with their usual tough defense and an organized offensive attack that never really gave DYN a chance, despite never putting too much distance on the scoreboard. SPR (F) Mark Hahn put up a signature defensive effort with 6 steals.

Make BDL Great Again (1-4) 49
Skillshare (3-2) 55
Thu (5/5) 8:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Scott Sullivan (SKL) 15 pts, 9 reb

RECAP: Skillshare got off to a strong start with (G) Michael Hamane scoring its first 8 pts, but they would hit a drought in the 3rd qtr to let Ball Don’t Lie back in it. There were moments when it seemed like BDL might pull off another miracle comeback like they did last week, but the steady of play SKL (F) Scott Sullivan on the boards and offensively, helped to hold off a short-handed BDL that ran out of gas. (F) Rondeep Dutta was strong in his BDL debut.

Doris From Rego Park (3-2) 42
Guard Me Maybe (4-1) 70
Thu (5/5) 9:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Jin Bae Kim (GMM) 15 pts, 5 reb

RECAP: Doris From Rego Park also missed a key player in the lineup, (F) Billy Katz. Even more than his 15 pts, 11 reb a game, they missed his energy. Guard Me Maybe took control of this game early and never let up. GMM (F) Jin Bae Kim has been the key to their rise to no. 1. His energy on both sides of the ball fuels the entire team, and his slashing ability has been one of a kind this season. Nobody has found a way to keep him out of the paint so far.

TDL Spring 2016 Week 4 Results

Meta World War (2-1) 77
That 70s Team (2-2) 21
Wed (5/4) 6:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: S. McCleod (MWW) 26 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: This was a shell squad for That 70s Team, they had only two players available. And, Meta World War took full advantage, pouring it on, leading by 50 or more points by the 3rd qtr alone. It wasn’t pretty.

Boomtown (1-2) 49
NY Dynasty (2-1) 58
Wed (5/4) 7:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: G. O’Garro (DYN) 17 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: NY Dynasty looked sluggish in the first half as Boomtown came out with their usual high energy D. DYN shot poorly from the perimeter and BOO took advantage in transition. But DYN settled down in the 2nd half as their defense hunkered down. DYN (F) Fred Simpson took over in the 4th qtr with 3 steals for consecutive points that gave DYN the lead and control of the game in what felt like a shocking comeback win.

Free Agents (3-1) 78
Guard Me Maybe (2-2) 70
Wed (5/4) 8:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: M. Blakely (FAS) 24 pts, 8 reb

RECAP: On a night when the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers broke an NBA record for 3FGs in one game, it looked like the Free Agents were trying to do the same. It seemed like they couldn’t miss from 3. Still, Guard Me Maybe kept this a back and forth kind of game, but late, their lack of a consistent perimeter attack saw them fall short.

NYK Spartans (0-4) 56
Sal Team 6 (3-1) OT 57
Wed (5/4) 9:45pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Sam Marshall (SAL) 16 pts, 7 reb

RECAP: This one needed an extra period to be decided. (C) Chris Lemoine‘s addition to the NYK roster gave them some power to contend with in the paint, but Sal Team 6 answered by shooting well from 3. In fact, it was a late 3FG by (G) Brett Swanson that would be the go-ahead basket and game-winner in OT.
