TDL Summer 2016 Week 3 Results [D1]

Raining Rosebuds (1-2) 51
ISS Flightz (0-2) 48
Sun (7/24) 11am at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Joseph Jaffee (RAR) 19 pts, 6 ast

RECAP:  Not yet available.

SK War Dog (3-0) 75
Shawty Likes the Way (1-2) 34
Sun (7/24) 1pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: M. Campbell (SKW) 28 pts, 14 reb

RECAP: Sometimes, especially in a game won like this, the whole story can be told in the box score. And in this case, the headliner is the 61-22 advantage on the glass, SK War Dog simply dominated a short-handed Shawty Likes the Way I Ball Out in the paint. SKW (F) Michael Campbell has been quiet this season, but this is what he’s capable of at his best. Four SKW players reached double-digit rebounds, that is a season-best across all divisions thus far.

Raining Rosebuds (0-2) 51
Yung No Fly Zone (1-1) 61
Sun (7/17) 3pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Mike Reding (NFZ) 22 pts, 10 reb

RECAP: It’s no secret that Yung No Fly Zone (F) Michael Reding has been the best player in D1 since entering 5 seasons ago. But when he gets hot like this, it just feels like NFZ is unstoppable. Except that the Space Badgers were right there with them all along with what’s now trademark balls-out effort from (F) Zach Moretti. As well as NFZ played, racking up 21 assists on 25 made FGs, they never could shake SPB until the very last few plays of the game.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 3 Results (D2 SUN)

Sex Panthers (3-0) W
Raptors (1-2) L
Sun (7/24) 12pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: N/A

RECAP: Sex Panthers win by forfeit.

Teal Curtain (2-1) 59
Goat Herders (0-3) 43
Sun (7/24) 2pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ian Zack (TEA) 19 pts, 5 ast, 4 stl

RECAP: The Goat Herders played Teal Curtain dead even until a breakout 3rd quarter pushed TEA in control of the game. GOA (F) Pete Tsevdos finished with a solid double-double but struggled to shoot efficiently against TEA’s size in the paint. GOA (G) Billy Seremetis, in a rare appearance, added much needed 3-pt shooting, but it wasn’t enough to hold off red hot TEA (G) Ian Zack‘s 19 pts with 5 3FGs.

No Fly Zone OG (3-0) 73
Gritty FOB City (1-2) 72
Sun (7/24) 4pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Evan Leong (NFZ) 24 pts, 8 3FGs

RECAP: On paper, there is really no way No Fly Zone OG could conceivably win this game. Gritty FOB City had a full roster against an NFZ team with no bigs. But it turned into a shoot out as neither team could consistently defend the other as each played to their strengths. NFZ used their speed/shooting, seeing three guards score 19+ points, a TDL first this season, while FOB dominated the paint with their bigs, (C) Vic Chia putting up a career best 25 pts, 26 reb and (F) David Ri also dropping 16 pts, 17 reb. It seemed like the kind of game where the team with the ball last would win it. Except, FOB had the ball with :06 seconds and never got off a shot. NFZ holds on for a huge upset.

TAP NY (2-1) 67
Larry the Cable Guy’s Kids (0-3) 54
Sun (7/24) 5pm at Graphics HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Will Chu (TAP) 24 pts, 6 3FGs

RECAP: For the second week in a row Larry the Cable Guy’s Kids (G) Eddie Tsao was quiet offensively, and it’s probably unfair to expect the kind of output he displayed in Week 1 in every game, but LAR needs his scoring like TAP NY needs (G) Will Chu. Last week, in a loss, Chu started to find his jumper again, and this week, he unleashed it with a fury, at one point making 4 straight 3FGs to push TAP ahead for good. TAP also saw solid efforts from (G) John Hsu and (C) Kevin Leung, picking up for cold shooting from (F) Jin Bae Kim. LAR also has positives to look at, (G) Leo Fu scored a season high 19 pts and versatile (F) Ben Wang grabbed 16 rebounds and 8 assists in a strong all-around game.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 4 Results (D3)

NY Dynasty (3-0) 51
Skiillshare (1-2) 45
Tue (7/19) 8pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ren Hsieh (DYN) 17 pts, 3 ast

RECAP: NY Dynasty went to zone early on to counter Skillshare’s superior size, but it wasn’t working very well. SKL dominated the paint anyway and  zone allowed (G) Elliot Curtis to orchestrate the offense without pressure. In the 4th qtr, DYN finally switched to man D and it made all the difference. They were finally getting stops they needed. Down 6 midway into the final period, DYN (F) Chris Seerveld hit consecutive 3FGs to tie the game. Then with the going back and forth, (G) Tran Truong hit two 3FGs to give DYN the lead for good.

LEGO (2-1) 65
MYPC (1-2) 44
Tue (7/19) 9pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Ivan Hui (LEG) 13 pts, 6 ast

RECAP: MYPC played right there with LEGO until a big 3rd qtr run put LEG up for good. Their rookie duo (GO Jeffery Chen and (G) Ivan Hui led the way with a combined 28 pts and 7 ast while (F) Jonathan Chiu finished with another solid all-around game. MYP (F) Steve Shin posted big numbers again with a game high 22 pts and 4 stl, but he couldn’t enough supplementary offense down the roster to keep pace with a red hot LEGO team.

Fatties (0-3) 42
Dem Boyz (1-2) 64
Thu (7/21) 7pm at MLK HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Kento Kato (DEM) 17 pts, 13 reb

RECAP: Fatties played solid defense in the opening quarter holding Dem Boyz to just 9 pts to start, and they kept pace in the 2nd qtr as well, to go into halftime down just 30-20. That is striking range for most teams, but DEM put up a big 3rd qtr to push the lead to 18 as (G) Kento Kato and (G) Xavier Melendez overwhelmed FAT with transition offense. FAT saw three scorers reach double-digits for the first time this season, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with DEM.

Spaghetti Ramen (2-1) 56
NY Freemasons (2-2) 36
Thu (7/21) 7pm at Murry B. HS Boxscore
Player of the Game: Leuis Ng (SPR) 15 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast

RECAP: A big 2nd qtr gave Spaghetti Ramen the advantage as they looked to bounce back from a heart-breaking loss in Week 3. It was all Ramen defense as the NY Freemasons shot a team season worst 23% from the field while giving up the ball 14 times. The Ramen defense held the Freemasons to a season low 36 pts.

TDL Summer 2016 Week 2 Power Rankings (D2 WN)

Rank Team Record Comments
(n/a)
GA7
2-0 Game 7 is winning by an average margin of 26 ppg in two wins so far this season. They are young, they are fast, they play with high energy, and by the end of the season you may be looking at the best back court in D2, along with the best big man in (C) Young Song. So far, this team is on the fast track to moving up to D1 next season.
(n/a) PRB 2-0 Pretty Boys are the weeknight version of the defending champs (SXP) with two big adds, (G) Caleb Lui & (F) Pierre Riddle. Both give PRB the kind of defense and hustle that SXP lacked. (G) David Chu should easily lead the league in scoring again. With their veteran roster, this team is still the favorite to win it all until we see how they play vs GA7.
(n/a) BOM 1-1 Led by a core of do-it-all (F) Sherwin Salar, defensive stalwart (F) Joe Bravo and veteran scorer (F) David Hsiung, the Bomb Squad was an overtime away from going to the chip last season (as BSH). (G) Ryan Kim gives them more athleticism and another shooter. This isn’t the deepest team, but their Top 4 can run with any team.
(n/a) NGC 1-1 NYC Gritty Committee moved up to D2 to keep (F) Brandon Sang on the roster and he will bolster a formidable front-line. But the offense will still run through (G) Mark Lee, who will bring it night in and night out. The x-factor is always (F) Steve Chung. Whether or not he is making shots is whether or not this team is a contender.
(n/a) DYN 1-1 This is a big, versatile team with a lot of pedigree, but the NY Dynasty are old as dirt. Four players on the roster top 40 years of age, they ALL top 35 except for (G) Nelson Yu (34). So this really depends on a game-to-game basis whether they have the legs to win. Is it any consolation that 10 years ago they sweep every team in this division? Probably not.
(n/a) GMM 0-2 Guard Me Maybe may still be fiddling with their roster, but this is a team with solid pieces. (G) Kento Kato, (G) Tommy Wong and (F) Jin Bae Kim form a quick, dynamic backcourt. And (F) Adam Wang is a solid, versatile add, but this team lacks size with (C) Kevin Leung as their only big. They’ll have to shoot better than 33% to win.
(n/a) MOS 0-2 Mo Speights, Mo Buckets is a new team this season, so there is a bit of trial and error as far as finding the right level of play. So far they have struggled, but MOS has shown no quit. Due to the 7-team format this season, all teams will make the playoffs, so all MOS has to do is get hot at the right time. You just never know.

DOR
3-0 Doris From Rego Park brought back (F) Kyle Wilson to replace (F) Billy Katz who is taking the season off, and now a team that missed the playoffs last season is 3-0. Wilson hasn’t matched the “Wilsonsanity” of his rookie season, but he’s been solid all around. The real story is the much improved play of (G) David Weiss
(n/a) DYN 2-0 The NY Dynasty was one tough bounce off the rim from a shot at the title last season. The core is basically the same but they addressed needs by adding shooter (G) Tran Truong and Defensive MVP (C) Dan Tak from now defunct BDL. Add another contender to the mix.
(n/a) FRE 2-1 Honestly, the NY Freemasons aren’t much to look at on paper. Even they think so, but they’ve scrapped out a couple of wins to stay on the winning side of the standings for now. (F) Mike Lee has been a terror in the passing lanes and rookie (G) Steven Wong is quickly proving to be one of the best all-around players in the league..
(n/a) SPR 1-1 Never count out the defending champs, but Spaghetti Ramen has never been particularly interested in dominating the regular season. Their primary focus has always been to get hot going into playoffs, which they seem to do with regularity. This is the same cast of heroes so get your scouting reports in, there’s no excuse for sleeping on SPR.
(n/a) TOF 1-2 The only reason Stinky Tofu gets the nod over SKL with the same record is due to depth of veteran competitors on the roster. The last time TOF was in D3, they went to the chip, losing to guess who, SPR. (F) Carson Yiu has been as relentless as ever, (C) Jason Chan is also solid, but there’s an edge missing from their fall campaign.
(n/a) SKL 1-2 The core is back for Skillshare with (G) Elliot Curtis at the helm, but some role players have changed. They don’t have quite the same team height as last season, but (F) Julian Gutman has stepped up as a big rebounder for SKL. But really, this team is as good as how many of the core show up. Attendance has hurt this season.
(n/a) DEM 0-2 One thing you can never say about Dem Boyz is that they don’t play hard. This team has about as much heart and scrap as captain (G) Kento Kato could ask for. And their youth and energy means it goes at you all game. (F) Jovan Irving is a warrior. Finishing games has been the issue, they’ve been right there in each of their losses.
(n/a) MYP 1-1 You can’t really call it rebuilding, but MYPC is developing players for the future. Lots of young players here learning how to play together as a team. But they’re big and they play hard, and that alone will give them a chance to win some games. (F) Steve Shin will lead the way, likely putting up impressive #s all season.
(n/a) LEG 1-1 LEGO has some solid pieces and could make an intriguing run at the playoffs this season. (G/F) Jon Chiu is an established scorer and all-around contributor. But (G) Ivan Hui and (C) Danius Giedraitis give this team an extra kick they haven’t had in the past. Both can be strong contributors going forward. Plus, LEG has solid role players.
10 (n/a) FAT 0-2 The Fatties have always been a project. (G) Alex Yu and (F) James An are their strongest players, but they tend to run out of options if either of them is off. Hopefully they can get hot this season and steal some games.
