2ND DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
TEA
4-1 The defending champs dropped a game to NFZ, but got right back on track with two big wins. TEAL CURTAIN doesn’t have a true big, but their overall avg team height and hustle makes them tough in the paint. Five players are scoring in double-digits right now.
(+2) SKW 3-1 SK WAR DOG (G) Kash Miah is back so what you’re looking at now is one of D2’s most potent offenses, with Miah paired with (G) Vegas Dave Wong. SKW actually has 6 players scoring double-digits.
(+3) ROV
3-1 And speaking of offensive firepower, RICE IN OUR VEINS also has two of D2’s best scorers in (G) Derrick Kung and (F) Sam Lu. The addition of (F) Will Lee gives them a versatile big man, and now with (C) Atif Mustafa on the roster, ROV easily the biggest team in D2.
(-2) NFZ 2-2 NO FLY ZONE can go toe-to-toe with any team scoring-wise, but they also have the defensive personnel to get stops when they need it. But they the former SXP contingent will miss now departed (F) Chris Di, who has moved away. There is no replacement for the former MVP on the roster this season.
(-2) BOM 1-3 There are a lot of new faces on BOMB SQUAD, most of the core is not here for the summer season. So, it’s been a little uneven. There is solid talent on the roster, though, and (C) Manu Menon is a house. But they’ll need to build some chemistry quick to make a run at the title.
(+1) TAP 1-3 TAP NY (C) Elorm Gbordzoe has brought much needed help in the paint. But dynamic duo (G) Will Chu & (G) John Hsu are putting up uncharacteristically low scoring numbers this season. All teams will get into the playoffs, so there’s still time to turn it around.
(-2) RAR 1-4 RAINING ROSEBUDS got a win last week, but they don’t move up because their roster still isn’t set (four subs played in their win vs NFZ). They’re the only team with two 20-pt scorers on the roster, but they’re running out of time to get enough eligible players for playoffs.

3RD DIVISION (SUNDAYS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) NFZ
4-0 NO FLY ZONE OG continues on their unbeaten streak, leading with D3’s best defense, and finishing out games with clutch crunch time play, particularly on the defensive end. It hasn’t been a strong offensive season, but their defense will always give them a chance to win.
(+1) NFU
5-0 The way they’ve plastered teams in their last 3 wins may mean that recent roster adds have put NY FALCONS U. out of the D3 level of play. No teams have a player the size of (F) George Casale, let alone two with rookie (C) Mack Witherspoon. We’ll have to see how this plays out.
(+2) TED
3-1 TED TALKS has quietly put up a good showing with key wins vs JPU and LAR all but ensuring a playoff berth now. (F) Sam Kang has been solid and new add (G) Y.J. Gahng looked good in his debut.
(-2) JPU
2-2 As with most teams during the summer season, JAPAN UNITED has struggled with attendance, particularly in their last two losses. When they have their full roster, they’re a contender, so don’t get cocky, kid.
(-1) STR
2-3 The magic has worn off a little for STREET DREAMS, but they still have the league’s best scorer in (G) Miguel Melbourne and a perennial top defender in (F) Neil Dumadag. Maybe their laying low until playoffs but sleep on this team at your own risk.
(+2) BIL
1-4 BALL IS LIFE got a crucial win vs LAR to help their efforts to secure a playoff berth, the tie-breaker may be the difference. (G) Sean He is as good as it gets in D3, and now imagine if their big man hadn’t moved away. Still, making the playoffs would be a big achievement for BIL.
(-2)
LAR
1-4 At this point, LARRY THE CABLE GUY’S KIDS will have to win at least one of the next two games to even have a chance at the playoffs. And it won’t be easy with JPU and NFU in the pipeline. But this is a team with all the pieces to make a title run. They just gotta get them all together.
(-1) GOO 0-4 GOON SQUAD isn’t out of it yet, but it’s a steep uphill climb from here on out. If they lose to BIL, it’s over. Getting that win is the only way they have a chance. (G) Charles Zheng has been great this season, but GOO needs help on offense to make any kind of run.

Sum ’17 Week 6 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+3) HON
4-1 The HONEY BADGERS have suddenly made it very interesting by sneaking their way up to the #1 spot. This is a defense-first team that will only get better in the playoffs.
(-1) DYN 3-2 Two straight losses and NY DYNASTY are starting to show weakness. (F) WIll Haile and (F) Michael Reding continue to be a deadly 1-2 punch, but consistency overall hasn’t been great. Key may be (G) Shaun Willis, they’re 0-2 without the veteran floor leader.
(=) AXA
4-2 AXA-RODD holds steady by getting a win over UNN. This is the 2nd oldest team in the league behind CRV, but they have a balanced veteran roster, and on any given night a different player can step up.
(-2) 808
4-3 They will probably feel like they left a couple wins on the board, but this was a solid season for 808s & FASTBREAKS. Their swarming D gives them a chance in every game and that will come in handy in the playoffs.
(=) CRV
2-3 If CRAFTY VETS win next week’s game vs YOL, they lock up a playoff spot. It hasn’t been a pretty season with all the absences due to summer scheduling, but (G) Chris Daley remains the most unguardable player in D1, which keeps the defending champs at contender status.
(+1) SED
3-3 SHUT EM DOWN is finishing strong. If they beat UNN (or if UNN loses this week), they’re in the playoffs. It hasn’t been their best season, but 2 wins vs 2 top teams in 2 weeks could make them an underdog favorite to compete for the championship.
(-1) UNN
1-3 It was a tough loss for UNITED NATIONS last week as they put up an effort that was worthy of the win. It just didn’t happen. Now, they will have to beat YOL this week and then SED in two weeks to get in.
(=) YOL
0-4 At this point, YOLO has to win out and see where the chips fall in point differential. Tough season for a team that looked like it had some solid pieces ready to make a move into the playoffs.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+2) GMM
5-1 Five straight wins can’t really be ignored, so GUARD ME MAYBE will supplant DPY for now. GMM’s mew addition have proven to be solid fits for the team so far. They’ll be eyeing a return trip to the chip, their last appearance in the Summer 2016 season.
(-1) DPY
4-2 It was a throwaway loss for DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF vs GMM, neither (G) Emery Clark nor either of the McFarlanes where there. In fact, they’re 0-2 without the McFarlanes. At full strength, the defending champs shouldn’t be worried.
(-1) NGC
3-2 Two straight losses for NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE by a combined 9 points, in which they’ve given 69 pts in each game. We’ll call the last one a wash, but the loss to GMM may raise some eyebrows.
(=) SKL
3-2 SKILLSHARE is right where they want to be heading into the final leg. If (F) Russ Braithwaite can get eligible for the playoffs, he will be huge as a paint finisher for them when games get tight in the playoffs.
(=)
MLG
3-2 Led by (G) Jason Gu and solid all-around play from (F) Ruoyu Chen and the rest of the team, MLGB is looking more formidable with every passing week. If they can keep the momentum up from these last two wins, they can make some noise in the playoffs.
(=) HAR
2-3 TEAM HARDWOOD is in control with the tie-breaker over PRE. If they just keep pace, they’ll hold the 6th spot.
(=) PRE
2-3 That early loss to HAR in the season opener might come back to haunt the PREMATURE SHOOTERS if they end up with the same record. Best to win out and hope for the best. Won’t be easy, JAM is playing for their playoff lives and SKL is tough as they come.
(=) JAM
1-3 SPACE JAM as idle last week, but their outlook remains the same. They must get wins on the board. Winning out assures a playoff bid. Any Ls and it starts to get murky if not possible.
(=) ROT 0-5 If DA ROTI PROJECT can get it together and get that first win, maybe even a second. consider this season a success.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+5) DYN
4-1 It’s taken some time for NY DYNASTY to work their way up, but with a win over defending champions SPR, they’ve earned the #1 spot this week. (G) David Chu and (G) Ian Yu are a formidable combo.
(+5)
AIR
4-1 Their previous drop in the rankings was an overcompensation, and the AIRBALLERS quickly corrected it with a big win over previous #1 NET. This is arguably the best defense in D3, allowing just 38.2 ppg (2nd best), and they make every game a grindhouse.
(-2)
NET
4-1 NASTY NETS (F) Matt Silberman had his first poor game of the season. And though you can credit the AIR defense, don’t expect too many more like it. As bad as Silberman shot, Nets lost by just 2.
(=) SPR
4-2 As defending champs, SPAGHETTI RAMEN has had the toughest schedule in D3. Their two losses came to two teams in the current top 3. They’ll get to play #2 AIR next week. But this is all just biding their time until playoffs, when the gloves come off.
(-3) COB 3-1 If AIR is arguably the best D in D3, they’ll get their biggest argument against from COBRA KAI, who allows fewer points, and averages a TDL all-time record 15.3 spg. (G) Tony Cuadrado may be the most dominant defender we’ve ever seen at this level.
(-1) NGC 3-1 We said this about DYN last week, but how does a 3-1 team like the NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE fall to #6?. The field is simply stacked, but you can sleep on Gritty at your own risk.
(-5) FNL
3-3 Right when we said we probably ranked FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTZ too high, they lose two straight. This is a new team with a learning curve to overcome, but they have a lot of solid pieces, and they will make the playoffs to get some post-season exp as well.
(=)
SNB
2-3 SMASH N BOUNCE is hanging in there. One more win over MYP will secure their playoff spot. Then anything is possible in a single elimination tourney. They have a feisty defense and a go-to scorer.
(+1) HAN
2-3 The newbie HANDEL ARCHITECTS are making a run for it now, winning 2 of their last 3 games. If they beat CMU, they all but secure a spot in the 8 vs 9 play-in game. Give (F) Garrett Brignoli (12.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg) a lot of credit for the late season push.
10 (+1) MYP
1-4 MYPC is basically competing with SNB for a spot in the playoffs now. They have to keep pace by beating MON tomorrow, then they have to beat SNB in their final game on Aug 30.
11 (-2)
MON
0-5 Sadly, the MONSTARS are all but out of playoff contention. Only scenario possible is if they win out and SNB & HAN both lose out, then it would come down point differential. So, there’s a chance.
12 (=) CMU 0-5 Tough season for the CMU BALLERS who never quite got on track. But like MON, if they can somehow win out and HAN & SNB both lose out, it gets a little interesting…

Sum ’17 Week 4 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+3) DYN
3-0 NY DYNASTY has two former MVPs on the roster in (F) Will Haile and (F) Mike Reding, so firepower they have. But they have scraped by in games vs the Top 5 (CRV doesn’t count). But better to scrape by with wins than losses. Haile is putting up stupid numbers right now.
(=) 808 4-1 Upstarts 808s & FASTBREAKS haven’t lost any momentum, losing only narrowly to DYN in Week 3. Rookie (G) Aaron Smith continues to be electric while posting MVP-worthy #s. 808s new pieces have fit in well and they’re starting to look like a real contender now.
(=) AXA
3-2 Old and slow, AXA-RODD seems to find a way to win, except when they find ways to lose. Every game has come down to the wire, but they can’t say they haven’t controlled their own fate. AXA is the kind of team that can win any game and also lose any game at any time.
(+1) HON
3-1 Flying in under the radar as usual are the HONEY BADGERS. They’re the grit & grind team of D1, which doesn’t produce intimidating #s, but always works well in the playoffs. Don’t sleep on the Badgers.
(-4) CRV
1-3 Player availability hasn’t helped the CRAFTY VETS so far this season, but that’s something they knew going in. At full strength, they’re still the best team in D1. If CRV can just make the playoffs and get key players playoff eligible, they will be the team to beat.
(+2) UNN
1-2 UNITED NATIONS has looked a bit uneven this season, but a win vs a short-handed CRV and a strong outing in a loss to 808 seems to indicate that they may be back on track. With no player scoring more than 11.3 ppg, they may need some help offensively to really make a move.
(-1) SED
1-3 They’ve lost no game by more than 6 points, so SHUT ‘EM DOWN has had a chance to win in every game they’ve played. Closing out has been an issue. But if they can figure that out, they have plenty of pieces to here to make a strong playoff push in the back nine.
(-1) YOL
0-4 YOLO is in a similar situation to SED, they’ve been right there in most games. They’re not out of it yet, but next week’s game vs UNN is a must-win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) DPY
3-0 Last season’s defending champs haven’t lost yet, so DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF will hold serve at #1. (G) Emery Clark and (F) Tyler McFarlane have carried the load offensively. (G) Kali Pearson hasn’t shot well so far, but he is racking up the hustle stats.
(=) NGC
3-0 Last season’s finalists, NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE, hasn’t missed a beat either and they looked focused on reclaiming their title. (F) Mark Lee‘s resurgence on offense has been the story so far, but (G) David Chu has been as steady as ever.
(+4) GMM
2-1 Veteran (G) Tommy Wong seems to have found the stroke again, which is great news for GUARD ME MAYBE who needs his range to open up the paint for GMM’s plethora of forwards. With some new key faces on the roster GMM might be poised for a return trip to the chip.
(+4) SKL
2-2 SKILLSHARE started with a narrow loss to DPY, then a close one to GMM. Since then, they’ve been thumping opponents, and (F) Russ Braithwaite has been a major key. With SKL struggling to convert from the 3FG, the more they can score inside the line, the better.
(+1)
MLG
2-2 Newbies MLGB have shown promise at 2-2. But they could just as easily have been 3-1 as 1-3. Surely they’ll take it. Last night’s 3-pointer to beat JAM at the buzzer may be the turning point. They play games close and so far have given themselves a chance to win every night.
(-3) HAR
1-2 TEAM HARDWOOD is still right the thick of things. A win over PRE is promising despite the loss to SKL. They’ll face a tough stretch ahead with DPY and GMM on the schedule, but if they can steal a win there, they can finish strong in the back 2 games of the season to lock up a playoff spot.
(-3) PRE
1-2 They’ve been a fun team to watch, but PREMATURE SHOOTERS may be on the verge of flipping the switch. Chalk up early losses to a new team figuring it out, this roster has the personnel to challenge for 4/5 seed.
(-3) JAM
1-3 SPACE JAM dropped a heart-breaker to MLG last night. More than the fact that they had it in the bag, they needed that win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Next week’s game vs PRE is a must-win. Then comes their toughest part of the season, GMM, then NGC. Tough road ahead.
(=) ROT 0-3 Truth is, DA ROTI PROJECT isn’t out of it yet. They basically have to win all but the NGC game to give themselves a chance. But they’ll have to check that first franchise win off the to-do list first.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1)
NET
4-0 NASTY NETS (F) Matt Silberman is playing MVP ball right now. His 22.3 ppg is 2nd in D3, and his 9 rpg and 2.5 spg shows his impact on defense as well. But the player that puts them above the rest is floor leader (G) Dan Gogerty, an MVP candidate in his own right.
(+5)
COB
2-0 As expected (G) Tony Cuadrado has been a monster for COBRA KAI, particularly on the defensive end. The 16.5 spg so far is stupid. And partial thanks for that goes to the low-key return of (G) Steven Chen, who has always been a defensive force.
(=) FNL
3-1 The win over AIR is nice, but they were blown out by the only team they played against in the top half (COB), so despite the surprising 3-1 record, the jury is still out on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTZ.
(=) SPR
2-1 SPAGHETTI RAMEN will always be right there. Don’t sleep because of all the new faces out here. Until they’re actually eliminated, they’re the team you put your money on. (G) Leuis Ng with another MVP caliber season. Business as usual here.
(=) NGC 1-1 The veteran NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is the dark horse, wild card, whatever you want to call it. They have the most dominant big man in D3 with (C) Victor Chia. And solid vets all around him.
(=) DYN 2-1 It’s crazy that NY DYNASTY is at #6 after back-to-back title games, a testament to how good D3 is this season. Partly due to a revolving door of PGs, which makes a difference in identity for DYN, but like SPR, sleep at your own risk. There’s no scorer in D3 like (G) David Chu.
(-6) AIR
2-1 The early blowout wins were nice, but the loss to FNL revealed that maybe the AIRBALLERS needed re-ranking. Still, (F) Albert Hei is having a great season, and they have the most mobile perimeter D outside of COB. They can move back up if they use it.
(=)
SNB
1-2 SMASH N BOUNCE is still a playoff team with their propensity for defense and (F) Nathan Kan‘s offense can give them a chance to upset someone in the first round. If they can advance beyond that is unclear.
(+1)
MON
0-3 The MONSTARS are still in the playoff hunt, and they will now enter the most vital part of their schedule, facing HAN, MYP, CMU, all teams that are vying for the 9th and last playoff spot. If they win these games, they will be in the driver’s seat for a post-season bid.
10 (-1) HAN
1-3 By getting a crucial win, HANDEL ARCHITECTS are still alive and well in the playoff hunt. If they can win 2 out of their last 3, they can give themselves a chance. Win out, and they’re guaranteed a bid.
11 (=) MYP 1-3 MYPC is in a similar position to HAN, but they’re down a loss to HAN. Like all teams in the bottom 4, they need more scoring. If they can pull out wins over MON and SNB, they have a shot at breaking into that 8-9 seed, or at least sending it to a tie-breaker.
12 (=) CMU 0-3 CMU BALLERS are in a tough spot, but not mathematically out of yet. Beat SNB, HAN, and MON, and they can still make it. But of all the teams that need a boost on offense, this is the one that needs it most.
