TDL Winter 2017 Playoff Preview (D3 & Premier)

(3) NYCE vs (6) GAME OF ZONES

D3 Playoffs (1st Round) – Wednesday, March 15, 7pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
NYCE has a big, tough, and physical front court that can dominate a game on the defensive end. What they can get offensively from their guards is usually what determines if they can win the game. If NYCE can slow the pace down and use their advantage in the paint, they are the favorites to advance to the semis.
NYE
4-3

46-42

GOZ
2-5
In their regular season meeting, it looked like GAME OF ZONES had it won until NYE’s late comeback to steal it. That was one of GOZ’s best games as a team, and (G) Tommy Zheng wasn’t even on the floor. This is a scrappy team that will put up the effort, and Zheng gives them the dynamic scorer they need.
Key Player: D. Cunningham

NYE (F) DaVaughn Cunningham is the team’s best defensive player, and he controls the game on that end. He can also score, and has made some big shots this season in crunch time. NYCE’s chances start with his all-around play.

Pos: G

Key Player: Tommy Zheng

It took awhile for Zheng to join the GOZ roster as he recovered from an early season injury, but he was a perfect fit as soon as he stepped on the floor. He’s the play-maker they have need all season. His speed and shooting can force big mismatches.

(3) F.K.A.L.J.S vs (6) TEAM COLISEUM

Premier Playoffs (1st Round) – Wednesday, March 15, 8pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
F.K.A.L.J.S. just played COL last week and it went to the last shot. They survived, despite not playing well in their last 2 gms. That tends to fluctuate with their roster, which is always short-handed. If (G) David Kalema and (F) Tom Killiam are there, FKA has serious firepower. And (C) Mike Holsey‘s defensive presence is key. If any of these guys are missing, it might be 50/50 here.
FKA
4-3

66-61

COL
2-5
The record is not strong, but TEAM COLISEUM has played better as of late. (F/C) Michael Hickman is a defensive force in the paint, and their offense has picked up with (F) Jimmy Noel and (G) Kashean Allston giving (G) Landon Glover some support on the wings. If they keep up their strong play, this might be a case of a team getting hot at just the right time.
Key Player: Tom Killiam

Killiam is an athletic forward who is as adept at finishing in transition as he is elevating to hit the jumper. It’s his athleticism that gets him open shots, they’re mostly indefensible. If he gets hot, he can put up a lot of points in this game.

Pos: F

7.0 rpg
3.3 apg

Pos: G
18.4 ppg

3.4 apg
Key Player: Landon Glover

The veteran Glover is arguably the Premier’s most versatile guard, but the 3’s & FTs haven’t been going in as much this season, both of which are go-tos for Glover late in games. This could be fatigue for doing so much, but it’s all or nothing now.

(4) TEAM SIX vs (5) WE HAD GAME

Premier Playoffs (1st Round) – Wednesday, March 15, 9pm at Fashion HS

Team Notes Team Score Team Team Notes
This hasn’t been TEAM SIX‘s most focused season. The former champs and perennial contenders seem to have been looking ahead to playoffs all season. Now they’re here, and it’s now or never to start opening it up. They certainly have the roster to do it. (G) Brett Swanson can heat up at any moment and rookie (G) BJ Davis has given them a player with an extra gear this season.
SIX
4-3

65-66

WHG
4-3
This is a demonstrably better team, but nevertheless, WE HAD GAME is back in the 5 seed. Part of that has to do with key players being out, their top 2 scorers have played only 3 games each. But, at full strength, WHG is still a serious contender. New faces (G) Jordan Schultz and (G) Zack Simmons add knock down range and savvy to a team that was already solid on that front.
Key Player: P. McClelland

McClelland has had some games in which he has looked unstoppable this season, but like his team overall, it just hasn’t been very consistent. Still, the match-ups should bend in his favor, so if he can heat up in this game, it could be his world.

Pos: F

Pos: F
27.3 ppg
5.0 rpg
2.0 apg
Key Player: Ezra Ritchin

You wouldn’t know it to look at him, but Ritchin is the most relentless scorer in the Premier. He just keeps attacking you in the paint and he can also hit the 3. Ritchin’s FG efficiency is through the roof, and to top it all off, he’s a feisty defender, too.

TDL Winter 2017 Week 7 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

PREMIER DIVISION

Rank Team Record Comments
(+2)
MWW
5-1 The more things change, the more they stay the same. METTA WORLD WAR is back in top billing. (G) Shamel Arasmo is starting to pick it up now, but it’s the glue-guy effort of capt (F) Kareem Merrick, (F) Nick Pelletier and (F) Gus David that keep this thing running.
(+2) DYN 4-1 This has been kind of a surprise season for NY DYNASTY. They have won some pretty unlikely games, but the new adds have fit in well, and (G/F) Will Haile is playing some vintage ball right now..
(+2) FKA
3-2 This shouldn’t be this much of a surprise, but after a rocky start, newbies F.K.A.L.J.s are finally looking like a dark horse contender. Much of that is due to the break out play of (F) Tom Killiam, who has lit it up in their last two wins. Sleep at your own risk.
(-2) WHG 3-3 Life comes at you fast. Just three weeks ago, WE HAD GAME was one more solid win away from a #1 ranking. Instead they’ve lost two straight. Not time to panic yet, though, both were winnable games. In fact, they probably should have won in each instance.
(-4) SIX 3-3 TEAM SIX has lost 3 straight, which has never happened in franchise’s history. At full strength, this team is still a contender, but it’s hard to say what’s full strength at this point. They need a shot in the arm.
(=) COL 1-3 Last week, TEAM COLISEUM got their first win of the season and that’s all it took to secure a playoff spot. Whether or not they make any noise in the playoffs, however, will depend on how much momentum they can build off this win.
(=) GMM 0-6 With their loss last week, GUARD ME MAYBE is officially out of playoff contention having lost to every team in Premier this season. (G) Donnell Mitchell was one of the most exciting players to watch this season but the team just couldn’t get together enough to squeeze into the playoffs. .

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) SPA 4-0 What NYK SPARTANS (F) Young Song is doing this season is just ridiculous. 30.5 ppg on 72% shooting. Go ahead and engrave that MVP award. Chalk it up to not knowing any better if you want, but if you’re not game-planning for Song at this point, what are you doing?
(=) ASN 4-0 ASPHALT NINJAS (C) Rigo Sargeant may or may not make the playoff roster, but this team is better due to (G/F) Kev Chang. A bona fide scorer in D1 for years, he gives ASN the heady slasher/finisher they needed. Also, don’t sleep on (G) Derrick Shich‘s much improved play.
(=)
HON
4-1 HONEY BADGERS had a chance to move back up to #1 but they lost a close one to SPA, their first of the season. And that was without (G) Alex Tsay and (C) Kanem Johnson in the lineup.  This is still top tier.
(=) JLA 3-2 If there were any doubts JUSTICE LEAGUE could compete in D1, put ’em away. This undersized team just out-works you. The only team in D1 with two players in Top 5 rebounding, and one is basically an SG playing SF. They’re streaky, but if they got hot from 3, they can beat anyone.
(=) OPA 2-4 OPTION A has secured a playoff spot so they can rest easy on that end. But they still have yet to prove they can beat a top tier team, which they haven’t done, despite having the size and talent to do it. This team could be a sleeper if they start getting hot right now.
(-2) TOP 0-5 For TOP STARS, making the post-season all depends on their match-up with ALL next week Mar 9. Essentially, it’s a play-in game. The defending champs need this win to even have a chance at defending their title.
(=) ALL 0-5 As mentioned above, this is the game ALL NET needs to circle on their calendars. March 9. Win and they’re in. In a single-elimination playoffs, anything is possible after that.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=) NYR 5-0 For the first time, the NY ROCKITS looked vulnerable against a DYN team playing short-handed. But they won, and they’re undefeated, and (G) Kyle Lew and (G) Dennis Liew are playing very efficient ball. So until proven otherwise, this is the team to beat.
(+1) DYN 4-2 They are old, and they’re shooting is wildly inconsistent, but if they’re at the top of their game, the NY DYNASTY can be the best team in D2. But that’s a big IF. One thing is for sure, they’re getting consistent great play from (G) Drew Chen. He just isn’t the scorer.
(-1)
NGC
2-2 NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE lost a close one to DYN, but they looked good for most of that game. NYR is in a tier of its own right now, but the second tier is a toss-up between DYN and Gritty.
(+2) DPY 3-2 You gotta give it up to DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF. DPY was not a winning team coming into this season. They made some roster changes and despite a slow start, it looks like they may be hitting their stride.
(-1) JUN 2-2 They have some very solid pieces, but THE JUNKIES need some more consistency on their roster. At their best, they can beat any team in this division, they showed that with a win over DYN. But that loss to DPY was underwhelming, unless we have both teams pegged all wrong.
(=) GMM 2-4 GUARD ME MAYBE needed a win to stay in, and they got it. GMM still needs to figure who’s gonna score for them–they average a paltry 44.2 ppg as a team–but for now, at least they know they’re playoff bound.
(=) JAM 0-6 SPACE JAM needed to beat GMM last week to stay in the playoff hunt. It went down to the wire, but the Jammers fell just short. It was a season that really could have gone either way for JAM, a lot of close games they will be thinking about for next season.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SPR
5-1 This team is unbreakable with (G) Leuis Ng on the floor. SPAGHETTI RAMEN is an unquestionable dynasty, and the key to their maintained dominance this season has been the rising play of (F) Matt Auerbach, who should get some MVP consideration.
(=) SKL 4-2 SKILLSHARE is still the most stacked team in D3, and now that (G) Michael Hamane has been available, they have a considerable amount of firepower. But, then they took a baffling loss to GOZ last week. We’ll say that’s the outlier, everyone has an off night.
(+1) NYE 4-1 If SKL is the most stacked team in D3, NYCE is a close second. This team is pretty over-sized for D3, but they’re relatively new and don’t quite have the consistency yet. Nevertheless, they’ve won four straight.
(-1) DYN
2-2 The NY DYNASTY got a rude awakening from SPR in a blowout loss. After solid efforts to start 2-1, they simply looked out-classed by Ramen. They do have the division’s top scorer in (G) David Chu, but their age shows up most glaringly on the defensive end.
(=) GOZ 2-4 When you look back to figure out where the turning point was for GAME OF ZONES, look at (G) Tommy Zheng finally joining the roster. Able to score from deep, go off the bounce, and convert at the FT line, Zheng gives GOZ the consistent scorer they’ve needed all season.
(=) 30F 1-3 They’ve lost three straight, but every one of these games was a close one, so don’t go counting 30-FOR-30 out yet. If they beat LG3 next week, they’ll clinch a playoff spot, where they just may make some noise.
(=) LG3 0-5 LG FOR 3 hasn’t had much consistency on their roster, but they still have a chance to clinch a playoff berth if they can beat 30F next week. Basically, the playoffs have already started for LG3.

TDL Winter 2017 Week 4 Power Rankings (All Weeknight Divisions)

PREMIER DIVISION

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1) SIX 3-0 It’s the same core group of players, and it’s steady as she goes. TEAM SIX is once again a contender. Getting (F) Parker McClelland playing at a high level is a big part of that. Big test this week vs MWW.
(+2)  WHG 3-1 After losing their opener, WE HAD GAME has won 3 straight incl a big win over defending champs MWW. (G) Michael Springer is playing MVP-caliber ball, and (F) Ezra Ritchin‘s relentless attack makes WHG a dangerous offense. Adding (G/F) Zack Simmons is huge.
(-2)
MWW
3-1 METTA WORLD WAR was short-handed and out of sync in a Wk 4 loss, but (F) Claude Blue returned to the lineup. If healthy, he’s a top end athlete. Rookie (F) Ishmael Kalilou has been solid. MWW haven’t been as dominant with new pieces to work in but don’t sleep on them.
(-1) DYN 2-1 Rocky start for NY DYNASTY with some new faces on the roster, but they seem to have found an identity. DYN has played thus far like a grind it out kind of team. It won’t be pretty, but they’ll compete.
(=) FKA 1-2 F.K.A.L.J.S has talent, and they’re two losses came by a combined 2 pts to Top 4 teams DYN and MWW. They could just as easily be 3-0, so closing games is what they have to figure out. (G) David Kalema and (F) Tom Killiam are two of Premier’s most exciting new players.
(=) COL 0-3 After strong showings vs last season’s finalists MWW and SIX, TEAM COLISEUM took a big L vs red hot WHG. How they bounce back from this will determine their season. It’s must-win time now.
(=) GMM 0-4 With the names on this roster, and the addition of dynamic rookie (G) Donnell Mitchell, you wouldn’t have thought this team would be 0-4. They’re not out of it yet, but like COL, it’s must-win time.

1ST DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+2) SPA 3-0 NYK SPARTANS (F) Young Song is on fire, scoring 33.3 ppg on 74% FGs. And it’s nothing special. He is not athletic, not big, not a shooter. He just knows how to put the ball in the hole. If you want beat SPA, you have to figure out how to stop Song. Don’t ask us, we don’t know either.
(=) ASN 3-0 It was always feels like the ASPHALT NINJAS have the longest roster in the league and captain (G) Wilson Lew always seems able to get contributions from every player. Last season’s finalists are a contender again this season with (C) Rigo Sargeant back.
(-2)
HON
3-0 The HONEY BADGERS fall two spots through know fault of their own. They are a ground and pound team, but so is everyone else in the Top 3 right now. The big ? for HON is getting (F) Zack Moretti on track.
(+1) JLA 1-2 The neophyte JUSTICE LEAGUE has shot well from three, which has kept them in games. They’ve been competitive and front-court adds will help. JLA should make the playoffs. Then we’ll see how far they’ve come.
(+1) OPA 1-3 OPTION A has one of the most imposing front-courts in D1 with (F) Haris Ahmed and (C) Pablo Salcedo covering the paint. They’ve been right there in every game, they just have to figure out how to win close games. If they do, this team could be a dark horse contender.
(-2) TOP 0-3 Not a pretty start for the defending champs, but the regular season has never been kind to the TOP STARS. If they can just qualify for the playoffs, we’ve already seen what kind of run they can make.
(=) ALL 0-3 Rough start for ALL NET so far, but they’re by no means out of it yet. They have all the size and skill positions filled, they just need to start making shots. If they get hot, they can make a move.

2ND DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(+1) NYR 3-0 The NY ROCKITS are the youngest and fastest team in D2, and it’s that speed that has opponents stifled right now. It might take a bigger team to dictate the tempo with ground and pound to beat them, but NGC wasn’t able to do it. Tough to say right now if anyone will.
(-1)
NGC
2-1 They didn’t look good vs NYR, but NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE is still a fully loaded veteran roster. They should bounce back from that loss to make the playoffs easily. Then they’ll get another shot at NYR.
(=) DYN 2-1 When they’re good, they’re great. When they’re bad, they’re terrible. It’s no secret this is the entire league’s oldest team (across all divisions). But at full strength, this is a veteran roster with the pieces to win it all.
(+3) JUN 1-1 They beat a short-handed DYN team, but lost to GMM who is 1-3. Which is to say, the JUNKIES look solid, but we’ll need to see one more strong win before they move up. We’re not betting against them.
(=) DPY 2-1 DON’T EVER PLAY YOURSELF is in good position at 2-1. If they can get two more wins, they will seal a playoff berth. Their off season adds have been effective, solid turnaround so far.
(-2) GMM 1-3 GUARD ME MAYBE’s franchise player (F) Brian Law hasn’t played a game this season, so accordingly, they’re 1-3. They can still squeak back into the playoff picture, but it’s pretty much must-win territory now.
(-1) JAM 0-4 Not the start SPACE JAM was looking for. And their last two losses were especially painful, they could’ve been wins. So it’s must-win time now. JAM have to win out and hope for some losses, but they’re not out of it.

3RD DIVISION (WEEKNIGHTS)

Rank Team Record Comments
(=)
SPR
3-0 How is SPAGHETTI RAMEN still this good? With (G) Leuis Ng quiet so far, (F) Matt Auerbach has been their best player. They’re the quintessential D3 team, no ringers or oversized players. Just a group who has been together a long time and plays hard. It’s aspirational.
(=) SKL 3-1 Defending champs, SKILLSHARE, are the Golden State Warriors of D3, a top-heavy team with the ability to blowout any team. And (G) Michael Hamane hasn’t even played a full game yet. They’ll get their opponents’ best effort every night this season, but they have not wavered.
(=) DYN 2-1 NY DYNASTY upgraded their shooting this season with (G) David Chu. Which gives this defensive-minded team the offense it needs to contend this season. If (F) Brian Yang can playoff enough games to qualify for the playoffs, he’s the front-court option they need.
(=) NYE 2-1 With two much-needed wins, NYCE has bounced back from a season opening dud to put themselves in position to make the playoffs. This is as big a roster as you’ll find in D3. Figuring out chemistry is the key.
(=) 30F 1-2 Captain (F) Adam Wang trimmed some of the fat from last season’s 30-FOR-30 roster, but they may have lost some of that raw energy last season’s team had. Nevertheless, this is a team with solid pieces. They just need someone (Wang) to step up as a consistent scorer.
(=) GOZ 1-3 GAME OF ZONES picked up a huge win to keep their playoff hopes alive. But the road gets no easier, they’ll have to win out to stay above water, and they face last season’s finalists SPR and SKL ahead.
(=) LG3 0-4 Newbies LG FOR 3 haven’t won yet, but it can take time for new teams to get acclimated. If you can believe it, Spaghetti Ramen didn’t win very much early on either, now they’re going for a 5th D3 title.
